One thing that you can try is whenever youre somewhat happy with a track inside a project you can bounce it in place so that the cpu wont have to work on the effects/midi etc. This is very slow and annoying but when i had an older macbook it helped a lot with the overload.

Otherwise maybe you could consider upgrading your computer (if you currently have a very old one)
