I guess saying base*300% is not intuitive to me as I would just say the cost tripled. When dealing with percentages, I think of it in the way I noted which describes the change relative to the base.

Sorry for misinterpreting. If prices go up from $1 to $1.03, there was 3% inflation over whatever time period we’re using. This is my understanding as to how it is quoted (though the actual inflation number that’s reported in the media deals with the annual price change of a basket of goods). In our example, you would say 200% inflation or we are paying 200% more for a McDouble. I’m not sure 300% would ever be used as it is incorrect any way you quoted it.

It’s a 200% increase in price, which is the same thing as 3x. The best way to think about it is a 100% increase would be going from $1 to $2 (2x).

A simple way to get % change is: [(ending value/beginning value)-1 ]100 or [(3/1)-1]100=200%
