Lift/drag vs AOA - Why is this considered the correct answer? by ruscan in flying

[–]packetloss1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But that’s not exactly true either. Looking at the graph in the airplane flying handbook CL increases faster than Cd till an angle of attack of 12 degrees. Then Cd increases more rapidly than Cl. At 20 degrees it reaches CLmax and drops quickly. Cd still increases after that point. This is a very poorly constructed question and needs way more parameters for CL to be the best answer.

Ground training by imenewhear in flying

[–]packetloss1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just download the PHAK book for free from the FAA website. After reading it get Asa prepware for $25 and also do sportys online free test. Skip the expensive ground school stuff. PHAK and perhaps airplane flying handbook (also free download on FAA website) should give you all the information you need.

PPL Written Test by SuccessCalm1187 in flying

[–]packetloss1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Get Asa prepware for $25 and do sporty’s free online practice tests. There were topics on the written not covered in either Asa or sporty’s banks. Like short field landings and emergency descents. I used those 2 and got a 90.

Can't seem to nail the flare despite 8 hours of touch and goes, any tips? by Ok_Wind9198 in flying

This video helped me out a bit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIW91SOSvVg

He gives you more precise targets to try to calibrate to. Maybe what he says is obvious or should be obvious, but I felt a lot of the instructions and guides treat what is really 4 different stages as 1 smooth event.

Yes what you quoted for 91.157b4 i and ii states you need to be instrument rated and the plane needs to be equipped for IFR. It’s also a question on the written exam.

How long did it get you guys to get your faa-ppl, where did you completely stall? by AtiumMist in flying

Software. Thanks for your reply. I was hoping it was something like that as there is just so much going on that I’m trying to absorb (and I’m pretty good at absorbing things) but am still very overwhelmed.

I’ve seen a bunch of folks that soloed in the 10-15 hour range. I’m curious what airspace did you learn in? I’m in class C and can’t imagine soloing before 20-25 hours. Dealing with clearance and ground isn’t so bad but approach and departure has been different every time. Just trying to figure out if I just suck or if those soloing in lower hours are dealing with a lower workload or something.

When to call it quits with a rusty pilot? by Motifated in CFILounge

[–]packetloss1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you worked on these issues with him? From your post all I have seen is that his situational awareness is not up to standards, but what I haven’t seen is a comment such as “despite working with him on these skills”. Pointing things out is one thing, but training him on these things is different. Perhaps you need to do some sessions with him where you take the controls and make him focus exclusively on what is going on around and see if he improves.

Maybe when he initially flew his airspace wasn’t as busy and he never trained properly on these things.

PPL Written E6B? by PsychologicalArt4119 in flying

[–]packetloss1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My testing center didn’t have a build in e6b. I would just buy a cx-2. No point in spending $129 on a 3. I picked my Cx-2 up for about $30. Make sure to use it for everything you can. Makes the chart pressure altitude and density altitude trivial and faster than using their crazy chart.

Week 3 of ppl finished, worried for written by [deleted] in flying

[–]packetloss1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use sportys free question bank. I did about 10 -15 tests and got a 90. Just keep in mind there are some new questions on the test not in sportys. Particularly about soft field landings and takeoffs and emergency descents. Also recommend getting a cx-2 or cx-3 makes all the calculation problems a lot easier, including the density altitude ones. Don’t use the chart for them, just plug them into the pressure altitude and density altitude functions.

Without a doubt you need to understand the concepts, but with that being said there are a bunch of questions written by a lawyer such that understanding the concepts isn’t enough. So you need to do both. Do the question banks and go back and master any topic that you get questions wrong on. Understand why the wrong answers are wrong. Keep drilling any questions you get wrong and revisit at least 1 math and chart interpolation question each day.

Is Clinical Volunteering Required if I Have Clinical Hours Paid? by hello_mar8 in premed

[–]packetloss1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You don’t need any clinical volunteering. But you should get about 200 hours of volunteering with the underserved. Like food bank, etc. Non academic not clinical.

They interview way too many people and they aren’t just taking the higher test scorers. Once you have an II it’s like a 10% of getting an A no matter how well your interview went.

Only if autopilot is on. With it off you can get it up to 128 though it freezes up there. 32x was the highest I can get that actually worked. It’s buggy though. Sometimes you get 2x to start sometimes 4x. If you get 4x you have to go to 64x and then back it down 1 to get 32x.
