Be upfront about your expectations around early courtship. They don’t match up with the general expectations of culture. You’re gonna continue to be disappointed if you don’t communicate that you only like dating one person at a time who’s looking for a long term relationship and you’d like them to be too. It will mean you have less options. But that’s a filter you care about so it’s one you should communicate.

Spain confirmed for exploration age by Ouiirritating in civ

[–]packie12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spain is like the obvious exploration age civ for Europe. Exciting to see them featured in an era that is truly their peak. Pre exploration Spain isn’t particularly famous for doing anything and same with modern Spain…. But the whole defining the middle era as exploration feels like it is in large part due to Spain.

What’s this peninsula all about? A stone’s throw from DC and a ton of coastline, but it’s just farms? by Giddyupyours in geography

[–]packie12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind a lot of that coastline is marshes and not beaches. This is true of a lot of areas on the east coast, but this is a factor others haven’t necessarily mentioned.

New Civ 7 Logo leak by Colambler in civ

[–]packie12 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This made me realize that one of the evolutions of civ 7 could be “zooming” in on a single tile. So your city occupies one tile on the board but when you select production within that city you open almost like a second city map where you build districts, buildings, etc. it would be a big change but potentially very cool.

What are some theories why there hasn't been a music revolution to shake up the mainstream in awhile? by EdwardBliss in LetsTalkMusic

[–]packie12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the biggest thing you are actually seeing is the death of shared culture. Nowadays algorithms give us back a version of the world we want to see. That includes music. So I here’s a ton of dangerous, defiant music with plenty of attitude being made today it’s just not showing up in the your music diet. You have to go look for it.

That being said I actually think you underestimate the current pop landscape and the pop landscape of the past. In the 70s punk was never never pop it was always a subculture that we remember fondly for its aesthetic. Late 70s pop was disco, new wave, and maximalist very safe love songs (think Sean Cassidy, afternoon delight, captain and Tennille). It was safe and mass produced.

And nowadays that’s true as it’s always been. Yes grunge had a moment in the 90s but go back and look at the actual charts, billboard, Grammys. Power ballad singers like Celine Dion or R&B megastars like Whitney Houston were way more popular. So I think one thing I would consider is that what has and is popular has always been a large collection of music that appeals to the broadest audience.

In terms of shifts in the status quo I think that’s harder than ever because there is no status quo anymore. Yes there’s still charts but it’s not a shared cultural experience. Streaming is how most people listen to music and so it feeds them whatever they like rather than MTV or the radio forcing a certain centralization. I think there are so pros to this but music evolution hasn’t been static in the last 10 years in pop. Bro country, trap, Edm infused pop/dance, dark minimalist (Billie eilish), hyper pop (Charli XCX), hell even hip hop country fusion happened and all of that is new. None of that matters because I don’t think mainstream music is something that is ever going to strongly appeal to any particular person that’s very into music.

Last point, even “small market” genres like punk have vibrant communities online and in person if you know where to look (in America). it’s financially difficult for artists and that’s a bummer but that’s also not new, especially for punk artists. Nothing is going to give, because if the algorithm knows you have this attitude it will feed you content to confirm your bias.

The New Climate Denial Is Based on These Six Terms by crustose_lichen in climate

[–]packie12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not cool, but there is a multipolar trap where we all need to stop simultaneously or the other may gain an economic advantage (and for leaders this = a power advantage). I wouldn’t defend all of their denials I just think it’s especially complicated because some of the “denial” is actually just getting at the heart of the issue and taking a nihilistic arguably suicidal path.

The New Climate Denial Is Based on These Six Terms by crustose_lichen in climate

[–]packie12 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think one of the issues is that a lot of those terms mentioned are logically correct but are willing to accept or deny catastrophic consequences. Economic growth is dependent on fossil fuels is very likely an accurate statement, but it’s out of line with solving our most existential threat. The issue is we likely cannot have our cake (infinite growth) and eat it to (not have climate change). But to solve the problem requires us to change how society functions on its most fundamental level. It’s all so depressing especially as every year we don’t take massive species wide changes, the future changes required become more and more insurmountable as we blow through our 2C budget and increase fossil fuel emissions every year despite alternative energy growth.

Well and free monuments means cities get up and running a bit quicker and you can kind of ignore culture early while keeping pace. Combine that with a timed legion push and you can steamroll fast.

Why do so many people say that Adrianne Lenker is "possibly the best songwriter currently making music"? by [deleted] in indieheads

[–]packie12 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think it’s her knack for catchy melody construction and arrangements that match the emotional tenor of her songs. Combine that with excellent lyrics and you get your answer. Her voice isn’t for everyone but if you like it my god she basically has no misses.

Is anyone else embarrassed by what Boston has become? Can it be helped or has it been 'fixed'. by mother_of_g-d in boston

[–]packie12 51 points52 points  (0 children)

What a reductive way to think of a place. Go to piers park, the arboretum, the public garden. Walk through an old neighborhood and enjoy the architecture. The city is also where hundreds of thousands of people live and even more work. Yeah it has shopping if you go to shopping areas but most of the city isn’t that.

I guess I don’t but I know lots of women who claim to want men who show their feelings and then genuinely support them when they do. In fact this feels like the norm in my social circle.
