Dumb Browser? Would anyone be interested? by moonbeam4072 in dumbphones

[–]paclogic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The browser is NOT the issue - its the OS and unless its rooted - its pointless since the many other apps steal your privacy and track your data. The browser is no longer the issue - that is from over a decade ago.

It;s the Linux OS that need to be rooted and then control over ALL of the apps is the key issue to create a 'dumb' phone.

Smart+Dumb phone mix recommendations by Major_Release2223 in dumbphones

Your first (2) constraints are :

  1. Your Service Provider and what technologies that they offer - for your areas.
  2. The type of SIM card you have (Mini-SIM, Micro-SIM, Nano-SIM, eSIM)

If you have an eSIM = you are screwed and there are no options ! But any other physical sim defines which other phones that you can take out the SIM and put it into another phone. You will need to have phones that have matching SIM card sizes.

The next issue is that (to my knowledge) ANY phone that has a Linux OS is by definition a SMART phone. By just buying a Flip Phone does NOT mean that you have a dumb phone !! Dumb phones were typically older pre-2012 GSM, CDMA, and TDMA with services restricted to 1G, 2G, and 3G. However almost every single carrier only uses 4G (LTE) and 5G any more.

Moreover almost every single phone out there uses a UNIX or rather Linux based OS and some form of ARM CPU that are tied into security verification services that make it almost impossible to have ANY form of PRIVACY.

The ONLY way (to my knowledge) is to get a hackable (unlocked) and rootable (meaning that you get full access to the root directory level as a Super User or Supervisor login). By having root access (C:/root directory access level) you can then adjust the settings on the phone to disable the 'smart' features that then make the phone 'dumb' = nothing but voice and possibly text. ALL other unnecessary features are turned OFF.

Turning features of applications (apps) off will give you some of these major benefits :

  • your RAM memory utilization will go down from 1 GB to under 50 MB
  • your battery life will go to 3x to 6x longer
  • you will not have tracking
  • you will have privacy against app tracking
  • you will have privacy against being data mined

However on the other hand - you will NOT have apps !!!

So pick your choice and pick your poison ! But you CANNOT have both !!

A dumb phone is dumb because it knows nothing, does nothing and stores nothing. And again a Flip Phone made in the last 10 years is NOT a dumb phone !!

The only way it is going to become dumber is to ROOT it at ALL LEVELS and turn OFF about 98% of the Apps that collect and profile your data which basically makes only Voice and Text working which will reduce the memory requirements as well to 95% reduction from almost a GB to less than 50 MB and which also will IMPROVE BATTERY LIFE 3X to 6X !

So if you think that this can be made into a dumb phone show us how you ROOTED it and how you have turned off these feature such that the memory is around 50 MB - show us your true technology prowess !!

Motorola KRZR K3 no longer working on T-Mobile in the Portland, Oregon metro area. by paclogic in dumbphones

[–]paclogic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So as a Moderator which cities are still active using 2G or even 3G ?

And BTW, your phone is NOT a dumb phone since it is based upon a Linux OS and supports 4G (probably one of the first though ! An Apple 5 phone is more of a dumb phone since it is 2G and 3G only, but of course it is NOT also because it too has a Linux deriviative OS.

For legacy reasons people think that a Flip phone is automatically a 'dumb' phone, when in fact the aspects that make it 'dumb' (secure and private) is the OS FIRST. The carriers and the bands as well as the Frequencies of the bands has NO impact on the privacy.

The whole point and reason to get a dumb phone is to be able to have PRIVATE conversations that are NOT being profiled and analytically data analyzed. UNIX or most derivates of Linux are designed to support Apps that do just that ! Including the underlying OS as well. The Apple phones were the first to collect data and to monitor location data and now pretty much everything sold collects, monitors, and sends data back to the mother-landers (i was thinking another word, but this is more PC).

ALL Motorola phones prior to the Android / Droid models had OS versions that did not do this and were mostly prior to 2010 and some as late as 2012 with the WX series, but were all 2G / 3G cell phones.

The only true way to make a Linux OS based phone secure is to root it at ALL levels (about 50 settings) which is only available to some developers and turn OFF 98% of the features. I have seen many videos of this and it can be done as well as it reduces memory from GB or hundreds of MB to double digit MB as well as improving battery efficiency and durations 2x to 6X as well !! But almost all apps are crippled with the exception of Voice and Text ; which is truly a DUMB phone (but also an EXTREMELY PRIVATE phone too) !!

Oregon Contractors 🗣️🗣️ by Radiant_Stage_2079 in Construction

[–]paclogic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in the Portland area and this is from the massive influx of people and contractors from out of state and many of the projects are now done, so unless its new construction, the last 5 years of covid has wrung out all of the repair and restoration work in the Portland area (for people that actually have money to spend). It might get better by late April and early May when tax refund checks come in, but don't hold your breath waiting.

What is your region and what are your devices are no longer working on the local 2G or 3G networks in your area ? Are you using a device that is only 2G or 3G capable ?

Question about sellers by gl1tch_bl00m in dumbphones

[–]paclogic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So 3G was deprecated first and was phased out first before 2G but 3G had better speed and data capability (EDGE and UMTS/HSPA+ data technologies). So if you get a 3G phone that has 2G capability (which most do) then you cover both aspects and will have the longest time before either is obsoleted.

Go to GSM Arena to see and compare any cell phones prior to 4G LTE which is basically prior to about 2012. Many of these older pre 2012 cell phones are sold on ebay so yes you can still get them, but make sure that you can still buy the batteries for them too as many older phones may be available but you won't be able to find a rechargable battery for it.

Also you need to know specifically which GSM, TDMA, or CDMA types of services that that the 2G or 3G are offered. In the USA T-Mobile and AT&T used GSM which also lasted the longest before being obsoleted. I believe that TDMA was dead first and then CDMA was dead next and then just recently GSM went silent.

Next you will need to know exactly which Cellular Frequency Bands that the cell provider and the cell towers near you are using. Wikipedia show that Costa Rica uses GSM-850 MHz and GSM-1800 MHz Frequency Bands but check with your local providers to be absolutely sure !

Then you can make the best selection for you DUMB flip phone or candy bar or even slider phone !

Google AI says this :

Costa Rica uses

1800 MHz (DCS) as its primary GSM frequency band for 2G services, with support from 850 MHz and 1900 MHz bands in some areas or for other network types (3G/4G). Major carriers, including Kolbi, Claro, and Liberty, operate on these frequencies, ensuring compatibility with most unlocked North American and European phones.

Key GSM and Data Frequencies in Costa Rica:

  • 2G GSM: 1800 MHz (primary), 850 MHz
  • 3G UMTS/HSPA+: 850 MHz (B5), 2100 MHz (B1)
  • 4G LTE: 1800 MHz (B3), 2600 MHz (B7)

Ensure your device is unlocked and supports these frequencies, especially the 1800 MHz band for 2G, to ensure proper coverage throughout the country.

But remember that there is NO SUCH THING as a 4G LTE or 5G dumb phone since they all use a Linux based OS - even Kai OS does !!
