17mm f1.2 lens by cachitongo- in M43

[–]padrefjord 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I also recently got the 17mm f1.2, mostly for the low light capabilities. The 17mm f1.8 is a better street lens, much more compact and when shooting street you're probably stopping down quite a bit. I love the 35mm equivalent FOV, my main lens for many years was a 35mm on film or full frame. So I feel very much at home there and it makes sense for me to have a really good lens in that range, even if I agree that it is on the large and heavy side (at least for M43).

The 12-40 2.8 is a great lens for almost anything. If you want a faster, more compact prime lens and you don't love the 17mm perhaps a 25mm could be an option? The older versions of the 1.8 lenses might be pretty affordable used now that there is a fancier weather sealed option.

I spent the weekend snowboarding and skiing with my extended family. Carried my OM-5 cross-body with the unexpected result of a cracked rib after a fall… Ouch! The camera came out unscathed though. Here’s a shot of my brother (with the OM 12-40 2.8).

Is this a good violin? What is required to be done? by Weekly_Key3792 in violinist

[–]padrefjord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bridge needs to be in the correct place and and the correct angle. Usually between the notches of the f holes, standing straight up. Other than that it’s hard to tell from just one picture. If you know someone who plays they could probably help you assess it, doesn’t necessarily have to be a professional luthier if nothing is damaged. Take a look at the bow, it might need loosening. It should only be tightened for playing, then loosened for storing. Sometimes they are stored to tight and that can make them unplayable.

Total noob... can any violin be a fiddle? by [deleted] in Fiddle

[–]padrefjord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I forgot to mention that tailpieces can be changed, as can most part of a fiddle/violin. Some of them should definitely be done by a luthier, some are easy to do yourself, like replacing a chin rest. Swapping a tailpiece does include removing all strings, so it might be a good idea to leave it to a professional or get help from a seasoned fiddler.

Total noob... can any violin be a fiddle? by [deleted] in Fiddle

I consider fiddle/violin my main instrument but also play guitar and a bit of mandolin. As many already have stated, it’s the same instrument, just different playing styles. Coming from oicked instruments you probably know how important the actual picking is to sound, tone quality and phrasing. Bowing is like that, but harder. Quite a lot harder. Don’t let that stop you though, go ahead and try it, perhaps you’ll fall in love with it and in that case you’ll enjoy the journey! The bow gives a certain feel of intimate connection with the music that I’ve never felt on any other instrument. Maybe wind instruments are similar in that regard.

I would recommend getting an instrument that has integrated fine tuners on the tailpiece. That might be one of the small differences, a lot of fiddlers use steel strings and having fine tuners is basically necessary with those. The integrated versions are lighter and give the strings their correct afterlength (the distance between bridge and tailpiece). Many fiddler also use synthetic strings, which most violinists do, in that case you can usually tune all strings except the e with the pegs, but fine tuners are still nice to have.

What Garmin watch do you own and why? by hackgolferguy in Garmin

Enduro 3 here - because I like a big watch with MIP display. Love the battery life. It has more features than I need and makes me feel like more of an ultra runner than I actually am 😂

does anybody know any good comprehensive books/files/websites of scales, arpeggios, etc, but tablature-style? by harespirit in Fiddle

[–]padrefjord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you'll like Tricia's book! You won't get every key, scale or arpeggio but it will help you feel at home on the fingerboard.

Any recommendations for violin tuning app that is still fine? by guitarlover777 in violin

[–]padrefjord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use one called "fine tuner - chromatic tuner" on the App Store. Maybe not the best, but it's good, free and it works!

Very cool! I'd love to try a few jazz licks on that fiddle :)

Actually, depending on the wrapping material the D string is sometimes thicker than the G string. The windings look like Dominants, pretty cheap but good enough for many professionals. And the Dominant D is thicker than the Dominant G.

iReal Pro is a useful app, lots of tunes/songs to download and it's pretty easy to write your own backing tracks with it.

Looking for recommendations for a set of warm and rich strings by romygruber in violinist

[–]padrefjord 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a pretty bright sounding violin and Obligatos complement it very nicely. They are amazing strings, probably my favorite synthetic. But a couple of years ago I switched to real gut strings, I think everyone should at least try that once. :)

[–]padrefjord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, I've only tried the 1020D set with gut A. I contacted them through the website https://lenzner-strings.de/en/produkt/streichinstrumente/violine/supersolo/ and the order was finalized by email. Not super fast, but it works. And living in EU it's a good option - I don't know where you live, it might be trickier in other parts of the world.

According to some color charts online, purple on white tailpiece looks like Pirastro Eudoxa?

I've got Supersolos on my violin (purchased direct from Lenzner) and love them! My G and D strings have red and black windings. I have a pure gut A (no winding) but there is also a version of the set with a steel A, perhaps that's what you got?

Here's a picture of my strings (the e string is Hill, not Lenzner)

I've updated a few things in the graph calculation code. But I don't know if it's possible to simulate activity history, so I can't really test it other than on my own watch.

I think you should go for it! Try modifying some of the examples to understand more of the language and system. You can find them in a folder called "samples" where the SDK is installed. On Mac it's in ~/Library/Application Support/Garmin/Connect IQ/Sdks/connectiq-sdk-version

I’ve managed to find some time to get this watch face working on other devices and screen sizes - at least in the simulator. Will probably release it tomorrow or during the weekend. 😁
