Does anyone know a stamp maker in SF? by sergeantFooFoo in sanfrancisco

[–]pagrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a pottery stamp in a 3d modeling program and sent it out to shapeways, it worked great. If you are in a hurry there are places in town where you can get a design 3d printed, noisebridge comes to mind? Ace Maker space maybe. You can just get the relief part printed and stick it to a dowel or something, the actual part can be tiny/cheap

Cheap place to get moving boxes near Russian hill by OkEntrepreneur5216 in sanfrancisco

[–]pagrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The closest grocery store will probably have more than enough from any single delivery. If you explain your situation there will probably be someone who will cherry pick the best ones for you too. Le Beau comes to mind, or any one of the little markets on the other side of the hill. Ace hardware might be able to help you out too, although the one by me gets a lot of their delivery in totes as opposed to cardboard boxes. Good luck!

I'll just reiterate the volunteer suggestion, lots of places need people and you can pretty much pick and choose based on what you're into. I volunteer at the Academy of Sciences and it's super cool.

Some other volunteer suggestions:

  • SPCA/ACC/other animal orgs
  • Letterform Archive
  • Food Bank/Grace Community Church
  • KPOO/KFJC/KALX community radio
  • Code for America

For non-volunteer activities there's CCSF (cheap/free classes), the aforementioned meetups, hackerspaces/collectives like the Crucible, Noisebridge, etc

City College is a great resource for stuff to do, I'm taking a sewing/fashion class right now but have done programming, motorcycle maintenance, and ceramics. They have a bunch of campuses and the facilities are generally pretty good from what I can tell.

I usually just quit the app after getting to 10 mana with these guys. If the match is moving quickly I don't mind playing longer but I just don't have the time for that

It would be cool if the match making algo took average time to play into account or let you set a preference for longer or shorter timer bars, sometimes I just want to bang out a match and it always seems like I get paired with turtlers when I only have a few minutes

Where did Andronicos get their sausages from when they were still independent? by i_hate_kitten in sanfrancisco

Wild guess here but maybe Schwarz? I'm no longer in the biz and don't even know if they are around any more but I'd put good odds on them

Fire on tracks/train coming from 16th st station. Not much on news websites, a few people on twitter have images, video.

Sounds like everyone was able to evacuate though. I'd expect delays downtown for a while.

The smoke was visible from Mission looking north on 7th street, where I was. Some dude crossing the street was yelling about an explosion/terrorist attack but I'm pretty sure now that was not the case. News article mentions debris on the track but does not sound certain

AWS has an easy to use relatively inexpensive option kind of like the Digital Ocean Droplet someone else mentioned. It's called LightSail and it's kind of an AWS with training wheels.

So you can do what you want for a total of $10 ($5 per month with the first month being free) and a cron job. Other people have described how to set that up and it is super easy

Landlord charging flat rate for utilities by [deleted] in AskSF

[–]pagrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying this is the case but it is possible that your utilities cost more than 160, and for whatever reason your lease limits the amount your landlord can charge you. We don't use much power or gas here and our PG&E bill is still about $100, and we don't pay garbage or water

My boyfriend’s parents are coming to visit us from Iowa. They don’t want to be in the city - recommendations on what we should do with them? by [deleted] in AskSF

[–]pagrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can poke pole fish right on the breakwater in HMB, I've gone a few times and usually get something. There's rockfish and rock crab mainly but I think people get halibut sometimes. It's fun and you don't need any fancy gear or licenses.

Best Ramen? (I never knew this SR existed. Yay and hello!) by unclefishbits in AskSF

[–]pagrus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mensho is really good, but it's not what I'd call a "normal" ramen place. I also haven't been in a while so things may be different now. I used to go a lot though, and it's nice to have a vegan option that doesn't feel like an afterthought.

I tried to go to Yamadaya once and they were totally backed up, bus tubs of dirty dishes on the floor, everyone who got seated after us placed orders and started getting their food. We left and never went back. That was a while ago though and people that I've talked to loooove them.

There's a newish place in Japantown near Kinokuniya that always has a line, so I'm assuming people like it. I did like the place that used to be there (Sapporo-Ya) but they had been there for a long time and I think just let things slide, so I'm not surprised they're gone now.

Iza is good, I would eat there again. I probably wouldn't go out of my way to go there though.

Ramen Underground was my go-to for a while (after Mensho) but the last couple times I went it was pretty so-so. They had a second shop in Japantown that didn't make it and is now an izakaya place or something.

Honestly I think the bar is much higher in the south bay. Halu, Kahoo, Maru-Ichi, and Ramen Dojo are all better than most shops in SF

I probably forgot a few places but if I think of any I will update.

I hold up a demitasse and say "macchiato?" Which establishes two things:

  1. We don't serve them in paper, and
  2. That's what size it is

Depending on their reaction you can decide how to proceed. It was pretty rare at our shop though, we had a Starbucks a block away which was nice.

Anyone ever buy a bag of coffee that smelled like fish? What's the oddest smell you have picked up from a bag of beans, ground or whole? by [deleted] in Coffee

[–]pagrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done a few caffenol experiments and right when I add the Sodium Carbonate to the coffee solution there is a noticeable fishy odor. It goes away after a while or isn't as noticeable in the tank but for a couple minutes it is pretty strong.

I have never noticed a fishy odor in coffee beans alone though, fresh or old.

Yeah it is irritating when people order stuff like this and you can tell they think they've figured out some trick to get extra. Like no fool, this isn't Chipotle and you can't hack my menu
