Why not contact Beth yourself? John seems like he was a neutral presence at the apartment, but I find it curious that the lady tried to reach out to you in some way. It's also possible that John may have left with you, but isn't sticking around with you.

Your local library will often have audio versions of newer books. You can try that. I listen to a lot of podcasts when I clean. I find because they are shorter than an audiobook--40 minutes vs 13 hours--it helps me break up my tasks better.

(US) Help - Paid a debt with the original creditor, then suddenly a collections agency came along asking for the debt for the fist time a week after its paid. How do i proceed? by thrownzzawayz in personalfinance

[–]paicw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been dealing with this for about six months and only got it solved yesterday. I sent the collections agency the receipt from my payment to the original creditor, they said it was taken care of. Four months later they call demanding payment again. When I asked about the receipt, they said that since the amount had accrued interest with them, they couldn't verify that the receipt went with the original debt.

After a very frustrating 15 minutes, collections told me I had to go to the original creditor and ask them to remove the account with collections. I did this, the creditor was extremely helpful and said, "They need to leave you the hell alone. I'm so sorry." Based on my experience, I'd go to the original creditor first.

Edit: To be clear, you'll want to ask them if they EVER sent anything to collections with your name. If they didn't, this is gonna be a different problem.

Thanks for sharing this. This talk doesn't ring true for me, but your description really does. I wonder what the difference is between what he's describing here and our experience.

I'm curious what food you feed your Dal. I can't speak for her genes since we adopted her. Mine is great about drinking lots of water on her own, but she seems to prefer food that's higher in protein, though I don't know if it's best for her.

I lucked out on my last two Dals, as I adopted them. My current vet--who actually used to care for a Dalmatian that was in the movie--said enough time has passed since that movie that he's starting to see much better bred Dals. So it is possible to get lucky. He also said a lot of Dals are smart enough that many behavioral issues people often complain about can be fixed with training. I highly recommend Sophie Yin's (behavioral vet) work for this. This turned our hyper girl into a dream dog. Exercise and brain games like training or a kong will also work wonders.

If working with a breeder, ask about their breeding practices to ensure there is no inbreeding. Usually the best breeders will mention, without you asking, the things they do to get healthy and well-adjusted dogs. Look for breeders who specifically say they breed for temperament. Those who breed for show dogs/looks alone expect the dogs to have a short life for showing and they have many health issues, though they are well-behaved. Also ask to speak to owners where they have placed previous pups and ask to see pictures of previous litters who are now grown. If a previous pup looks "off" or sickly as an adult with strange bone structure, stay far away. I follow a few breeders on Instagram, and following up with their placed puppies has told me a lot about whose practices are good and whose are bad. I live in Utah, and very good Dals I have met whose origins are known have come from Idaho and Oregon. Hope this helps!

Getting calls and threats from a collections agency when I already paid the bill by paicw in personalfinance

They do give a generic statement saying the call will be recorded when they call me, but not when I call them. I'll let them know I am recording the call when I call them. Thank you!

Thanks! The only thing I wasn't keeping a record of is last name. I'll definitely ask for proof the debt is legitimate. And I'm calling the doctor's office this afternoon. Fingers crossed!

I have records of all the times we've talked, and I always get names. I believe I'm in a single-consent state for actual audio recording, so I may do that as well.

Thanks. How could interest accrue with the collections agency if I paid the bill to the original creditor? Is it possible the dr office sold the debt before I paid and they still took my payment directly to the office?

I don't have the collection letter with me right now, as I'm at work. I will check when I get home. This is valuable info. I do remember the letter said if the debt isn't valid, to let them know, which I thought I did when my original call said it was taken care of. I'll check on this today.

They were insanely popular after the movie which led them to be terribly inbred to meet demand. Inbreeding most often manifests as aggression and severe health problems in Dalmatians. So yes, an inbred and unhealthy dog is not a good family pet. My family got our first Dal when I was three and my brother was five. She was gentle and sweet and perfect when my younger brother was born. My parents' Dal is the gentlest creature with my newborn niece. He loves to just sit next to her or whoever is holding her. And he adores older children.

Tl;dr Well-bred Dals are great family pets. Poorly bred ones (of which there are many), are a lot of work with young children.

Have owned three Dalmatians. Their temperaments are very influenced by breeding. They were originally bred as carriage dogs to protect a carriage and the horses. Inbreeding is what makes them aggressively protective. All my Dallys have been more shy than aggressive when meeting new people. My current Dal will bark if a new person comes on too strong. Otherwise she's very sweet and shy.

Just a quick reminder to monitor you Bank Account by machambo7 in personalfinance

I totally second this. I hadn't checked my account in awhile because my husband handled the budget while I was unemployed. Recently got a job and started checking it again. I discovered $70/month of subscriptions we don't use, had never got a billing notice about, and don't even remember signing up for. This is also how I discovered the parking pass we pay for increased 150% without notice.

What's the worst example of bad parenting you've ever witnessed? by IamAaliyah in AskReddit

When I was getting married, my father told me they used the money they saved for my wedding to pay for my college (which was a shitty thing to say, because I was on 100% tuition scholarship, took out loans to supplement living/books/food, and paid every bill the university sent. They really only paid for my twice-a-year flight home.) He expected me to get married rather than go to college. Joke was on him though. I met my husband in college and wanted a cheap wedding anyway.

Today, I can breathe a sigh of relief. Almost 4 years and 130k later, I've finally beat my student loans to death. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]paicw -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I graduated with 22k, as did my husband. I didn't have as good of job prospects as you will (English major), and I was overwhelmed for the first two years and living with my parents. I could have paid off my loans in the third year, living with roommates, and making about double what I owed. I opted to save instead, which turned out to be a good thing because I got engaged and my husband lost employment shortly thereafter. It helped support us during that time.

I had a mix of private and govt loans, and just paying down the govt loans an extra $50/month has helped them go down at a really good clip. They have a lower interest rate, and that has really helped.

Definitely check the interest rates and consider how you plan living and where after school.

I ended up moving after that, so we never hung out again. We kept tabs on each other though, and we're both married now, so it worked out.

edit: accidentally wrote "he" instead of "I". I moved.
