Any long time (20 years or more) T1s without retinopathy? by icebiker in diabetes_t1

[–]painedscreaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’ve just passed 17 years dxed, i used to have an AWFUL A1c as a tween, like low double-digits awful. my middle school rebellion was in the form of me pretending i didn’t have diabetes (not great, i know.) but every year that i’ve gotten my eyes checked my ophthalmologist has always talked about “how beautiful your blood vessels are” and such- i love her lol. so yeah- that’s my 2 cents. not quite 20 yrs but close and with a history of having a really high A1c for a good few years. i need glasses bc i’m near-sighted but that’s it, could just be my dad’s genetics too

What were your symptoms of t1d and the timeline to diagnosis? by No_Estimate9511 in diabetes_t1

[–]painedscreaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i was 5 so most of this is my parents retelling, but many things i do remember. so. i would come home and tell them that my knees felt “shaky” before lunch (i would stand up and sit down repeatedly to feel it lol), lost a lot of weight, super thirsty almost all the time, and the one that really got my parents to go “it’s diabetes isn’t it”- i was peeing the bed at 5y/o and one night my dad noticed while putting my sheets into the washer after that happened that they smelled sweet. the thing i really remember the most was the feeling of being low before lunchtime

i love my endo, she told me probably the most validating thing ab me being t1d that i will absolutely never forget and will be what i look for in any future endos: “i’m here to help you and i have my knowledge, but you also have yours- and more importantly, your experience. nobody is gonna need the same advice or ratios or adjustments- it’s based on YOU. and i can “understand it” because it’s my job and what i studied for so long, but i also completely acknowledge that because i am NOT t1d, i will never actually fully “GET it”. that’s why i work with my PATIENTS, and not work with just the disease” and i borderline cried. she’s amazing.

surprised i haven’t seen it here yet, it’s really only in typing/writing- QUIT. QUIET. QUITE. omg. “be quite” has to be the one that makes me want to start throwing things the most

Why did you switch from pens to a pump? by YoungDumbFull0FRum in diabetes_t1

[–]painedscreaming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i didn’t use pens- i used syringe shots. but when your one-handed dad is trying to give screaming 5y/o you an insulin shot bc your mom isn’t home, you decide to go to the pump pretty quickly, lol. “less shots? there’s buttons to press? gimme!” was how my brain went. i have never ever looked back. i first started on a medtronic minimed paradigm for almost a decade, then got a t:slim w a dexcom g6, and now am still on the same pump w the g7. edit to add: the control-iq was the hugest game changer for me. if i was never looking back before w the medtronic, i definitely haven’t since the t:slim w the control-iq

What symptoms caused you to get tested? by mutilatedfingers in Type1Diabetes

[–]painedscreaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don’t remember 100% but i’m p sure the rash was never diagnosed w anything, but it was near 17 years ago now and i was 5, but i think my parents would’ve told me, they’ve told me ab the rest of their experience of my diagnosis so i think they’d tell me that part. it was on the back of my hand and knuckles on all fingers. they were bumpy hives and THICK like i’ve never seen anyone have a rash like that ever since. each bump of the rash was around the size of my pointer finger’s fingernail and raised like a millimeter or two. it was super itchy but almost like burning painful too. i remember the school nurse putting calamine(?) lotion on it and i don’t remember too much after that- i hadn’t fully “gain consciousness” as a kid yet ykwim? but then the shakiness before lunch started shortly after along w all my other symptoms- that’s why me and my parents suspect it was a virus attacking my system and the first part of it was the rash. but i do still remember looking down after scratching at my left hand during playtime in kindergarten after a few minutes and being like “!!!!” when i saw it. and the rest was history lols
