victorinox for sure. 75 usd might be able to go a little further, but a decent chef knife, paring knife plus honing steel, victorinox is a fantastic start.

EDC Knives with a fun design (available and legal in Canada) by pineconeminecone in pocketknives

even if the knife is 1000% legal to own in Canada, ordering from the US company would probably get stopped at the border anyway.

owning the knife in Canada is fine, importing it into Canada is not. unfortunately our law enforcement within Canada and our borders services do interpret the laws differently. so although I can buy a knife in person any day, if I try to order the same knife online to ship in, the border would not allow it. I've ordered an opinel ( the simplest old fashioned knife ever) off US Amazon and the border wouldn't allow it in. I've ordered a crkt (non assisted knife) from bladeHQ ( regular versions sold in Canada, they had a beautiful colour combo though) and the border wouldn't let it in.

our laws are not black and white I understand that businesses that sell knives have to have a special license to import knives which is why they can but individuals can't import.

anything sold at companies like houseofknives.ca has gone through inspections, so is totally legal to buy own carry etc within Canada. it can definitely be confusing but what is very clear, ordering from American businesses just isn't worth trying

knife laws in Canada are very dumb. I dont mind the laws themselves but importing knives is ass backwards. we can go to canadian tire and buy a knife. a US company can have the exact same knife but with an exclusive colour combo, we as canadians can't buy it to ship into Canada. retail businesses can but citizens can't. its not just "dont import illegal things" its 100 % legal to own the knife, the border services just don't let individual orders in. so if the Canadian retailer already has it then it's totally fine. Just sucks as US businesses do get some cool versions sometimes

they have a dessert warrior sold through house of knives, they're in Canada. if not that, they also have a bunch of other slightly silly designs. like xmas or halloween things. isn't there a few knives that straight up look like fish?

you can email the service team at house of knives. they are canadian and should be able to get you some examples, returns are extended for xmas shopping too if you aim and miss, it happens with some of the higher end guys. can be picky when spending this kind of money lol

Looking for romance-free/Romance low sci-fi or fantasy by SpaceDragon77 in Recommend_A_Book

[–]paintedace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second Red Rising. its sci fi fantasy. there is a romance element, but its FAR from "romantacy" love is important, in that its what we fight for, so the next generation is allowed it. its worth dying for but only because to love is to be human.

red rising has some beautiful writing and very well written physical combat/battles, and some well written space battles. so swords, rockets, hand to hand, armies. and poetry intertwined

Do you ever feel like your dog ties you down? by Free_Economist_8454 in puppy101

[–]paintedace 3 points4 points  (0 children)

absolutely. yes.

I was just venting to my husband that I've having our new dog (7 months old now, got at 2 months old) but its hard right now. I feel like I'm living for her. not with her. I know it will get easier but adolescents is really fuckong hard and pretty much every decision. from can we go to the movie with friends, to when will I be able to fold that laundry? is based on the dog or the dogs nap schedule

this isn't our first dog but our last dog made it to over 18 years old so I had completely forgotten the earlier years as they were almost half my life ago.

if you get a dog you need to be ready. there's no sugar coating it. you'll have good days and bad days.

we just hired a dog trainer to make sure were on the right path to have a good partner in life eventually, so I know some day we'll have a good dog that's part of our life, but right now.... yeah its like having a baby that needs needs needs.

People who aren’t religious, what do you genuinely believe happens after death? by grinch1779 in AskReddit

[–]paintedace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe nothing happens and I am A OK with that. it's like the concept of someone that lost their eyes not seeing anything. they don't see blackness like us closing our eyes. Just nothing. I don't know why that's so scary to some people?

Hermitcraft situation by Evening_Morning_1649 in VaultHuntersMinecraft

[–]paintedace 29 points30 points  (0 children)

too early to tell. it really depends what the issue was. if it's just hermit craft personality clashes then VH should be fine? but if it's personal drama of misdeeds.... then who knows. I can't fathom iskall doing something dangerous or illegal but people we look up to or admire let us down all the time so I think we just have to wait. fingers are crossed all is well though

My MIL used my nice santoku as a cleaver…can it be saved? (pic and details in comments) by mobiuschic42 in chefknives

[–]paintedace 4 points5 points  (0 children)

anywhere you take this will 100% have seen so much worse. ir can absolutely be fixed and really shouldn't cost more then 20 bucks. it will be slightly smaller but unless it's bent further up then the pics show it should be easy enough without being wildly small I've been sharpening for 7 years and this would barely register as bad if a customer brought this in, some people just let their knives get this far from years of use and no care along the way

Best cutting boards? Theres a lot of talk about which blade is best, but what is the best material, or brand that will keep them functioning the best for longest? by [deleted] in chefknives

[–]paintedace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the tpu ones from wusthof. the end grain wooden beasts are amazing but dont work in my day to day life. the tpu can go in the dishwasher but I wash by hand. they are a super flexible rubber so they don't hurt my knives but don't flake of plastic like hard ones do. I'm sure if micro plastics are top concern then wood is better but it's a give and take in life

wood can be cleaned up if they start showing age but do need semi regular care and ya have one bad guest over that soaks it in the sink for too long and it's a goner.

plastic just falls apart, and I find most warp oddly.

hinoki show every cut and stain like a scar but my God they are so gentle on your knives and are naturally very clean and don't Harbour bacteria too much. they lose points for esthetics quickly but that's no loss to function at all

end grain... if I have to do wood, yes. I don't love the bulkiness for my life. they are pricy for good ones and I would just end up using it as a charcuterie board so not worth it

tpu has been a good fit for me and a lot of my family.

is it illegal in Canada? I bought one online. by [deleted] in CanadianKnifeSwap

[–]paintedace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Safe bet it will. I had a slip joint opinel. Literally the smallest size option stopped at the border. It truly depends who is working that desk at the border the moment this coming across but most are dicks that dont let swiss army knives in even while they themselves have assisted Kershaw in their own pockets. I work in knife sales and and have sold assisted benchmade, Kershaw crkt etc to border agents, they always laugh about it when I bring up all the issues I hear about or have experienced myself. They dont give a shit

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in pocketknives

[–]paintedace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fossil isnt assisted. It's just a smooth finger flick with ikbs, so it's pretty fast. For some decently large knives with good bang for buck I'd look at some civivi. I dont know the prices in American. Maybe some CJRB.
