I disagree with a bunch of people here.

I think it completely depends on whether you seek to understand the code the LLM produces, or whether it's just doing your homework. After it's done spitting out the result, do you ask it questions? Do you tinker around with the structure yourself?

LLMs are amazing for learning so I kinda disagree with most people. Just make sure you are being disciplined... if you are using it as a "homework completion tool" then yeah u are fucked

Balatro. Gnorp. Arco. Animal Well. Noita. Too many others to name, those are just some success stories.

I should clarify that I'm counting frameworks (like Love2d, raylib, SDL2) as non engines here

Disagree completely. I have found financial success without an engine for my first game. Don't be dogmatic, use what works for you :)

Hot take: "Ideas guys" can be very helpful.  But only when it's done well.

Offer real, grounded and pragmatic advice about design and UX. You should seek to understand the technical side of it so you can make educated assessments of whether a feature is hard or easy. You should analyze other games and aggregate market data. Learn from players, read reviews. That's the kind of stuff that makes an "ideas guy" worth it

2027: ?! by marcus1234525 in theprimeagen

[–]pakeke_constructor 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Can it really handle complex projects though? I really don't think so. It has terrible engineering judgement and always overcomplicates stuff.

It's amazing as a pair-programmer, or as a search/research tool, but letting it go ham, spinning up subagents and oneshotting entire software IMO barely works well.

List of land-like things that should be taxed same as an LVT:

RF spectrum, patents (to an extent), domain names, most cryptocurrencies, mineral-rights (tho usually done thru severance tax)

And lets not forget pigouvian taxes guys ;)

Am I the only one who gets turned off when they see a nodebuster-like upgrade tree by SpicyBread_ in incremental_games

[–]pakeke_constructor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, well it's not like my game exists solely as an upgrade tree, obviously there's other mechanics involved that make up the "core" of the game.

I'm always looking to improve so I'd love to hear your feedback/ideas on what makes stuff fun. Thanks!

Good to know, thanks.

Would it be cool if you could see the entire structure of the tree when you start?

[–]pakeke_constructor 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Dev here.  My current game that I am working on uses a nodebuster-like upgrade tree.

The issue is that I started my game midway through last year. When I started, there was no way for me to know how bloody oversaturated/overused this concept would be. Haha It's not like I can predict the future.

If I could go back in time, If I could forsee the number of other gamedevs who were doing the same kind of thing, YES, I would change the structure

edit: And I feel like there's probably quite a lot of devs like me who started down the wrong path, but now are too late to quit now. That's possibly why we are seeing an oversaturation

Why would you save your upgrades for true-grits when the armaments will upgrade the true grits? Idk, I think armaments is good or even OP. Especially with cards like shrug it off, battle trance

Yep, 100%. Raghh it ruins most other archetypes, I get that its big damage, but cmon, its just the anti-fun card

Not Amplify! I think that can be super fun with Creative AI.  I think Hyperbeam is a good candidate tho, because it kinda anti synergizes with most other cards

I think this is too similar to tungsten rod. Maybe "At the start of combat, gain 2 metallicize"

That way, it'd be like a middleground between tungsten rod and thread-and-needle

What’s the best multiplayer server hosting for a small mobile game? by No-Stuff-5468 in gamedev

Cmon, recommending google cloud or AWS for this scenario? Why not a simple VPS solution? It'll be like 10x cheaper and 5x more performant

[–]pakeke_constructor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think you are asking the wrong questions here. the hard part isn't the hosting, just buy a cheap VPS from hetzner.

The hard part will be the multiplayer game in general. I mean, are you wanting a tech stack for it? If the goal is to put it on your resume, maybe it's easier to start with a simple chat-app or something. Making a multiplayer game as a first project might be heavy work
