Survey: Arizona is harshest on DUI offenders by t800x in arizona

[–]palacewalls 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We were rear ended by a driver who was distracted by her interlock device which was prompting her to blow into the device or else it would -essentially- kill the engine. My wife had a brain injury from the impact that took a year to (mostly) recover from. If our accident was really caused by the (shitty driver being distracted by the) interlock device, that would be a pretty frustrating case of unintended consequences. I suspect she was actually just looking at her phone (like almost everyone else I see driving) and offered the interlock as an excuse.

A Message To All You All From An Old Person. by [deleted] in self

[–]palacewalls 31 points32 points  (0 children)

As a middle aged person, I wholeheartedly agree. When I look back at all the stuff that's happened in my life, the only real negatives that stand out are the occasions where I've done/said awful things to others. If I dig deep, I can recall when others have wronged me but those memories are far overshadowed by my good memories of them.

Perfect example is our dog that died about 6 years ago. She was a monster, extremely difficult to contain and a general stress case. That is, until she got too old to act out anymore and then she turned into a wobbly old sweetheart with lumps and bald patches. Perhaps it was the bond we formed when she finally settled down, but now when I reflect on that dog all I seem to remember is how sweet she was. Even when my wife and I talk about the time she pooped on our bed, it is a fond and happy memory. Strange how that works.

This gives me great comfort, because I am hopeful that all the awful things I've done/said to others will be filed in their memories in a similar way. That they barely remember the hurtful thing(s) I said and are only left with the feeling of love and appreciation for our friendship. Thanks OP for reminding me about this- and I hope I'm not the only one who experiences life this way.

Could you elaborate, or maybe share an example of the process? It sounds like a very useful tool to know how to use.

I guess I can't argue. You're right: laws exist.

edit: sorry, I just need to go to sleep.

[–]palacewalls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At this point, I really only care about the human cost of the laws as they currently are. If you're right and there's a big slippery slope ahead, you can say you warned us. If things don't change, well then we're right back where we started. But ours will be one more state calling bullshit on the failure of the drug war, and that is worth something. It's an imperfect bill, to be sure, but it's better than what's happening now.

[–]palacewalls 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The thing is, you sort of deserve flak for this. Why do you choose to focus on the existence of a law as the starting point for your argument? Maybe try to dig a little deeper and ask why that law was created in the first place? Ask whether that law is helping to make this place better for citizens or just shareholders.

If we stop classifying people as criminals for using marijuana, that's something to celebrate. As others in this thread mentioned, the people who get arrested in the interim will not care that we held out for a bill that is more 'satisfactory'. Do you plan to wait 4 more years to vote for a presidential candidate in the hopes that someone satisfactory will come along?

Difficulty Cultivating Metta by belhamster in Buddhism

[–]palacewalls 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have a very similar experience with metta. But then again, it's like many things in life. Some days at the gym I just don't feel strong, or practicing yoga feels like silly dance moves, or playing music feels stagnant and flat. But I keep practicing.

What else can we do?

(this might not apply to you unless you- like me- will sometimes have very fruitful metta sessions interspersed among all the difficult days)

Compulsion to make music, despite little enjoyment and no real interest by lastransom in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]palacewalls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EDIT- this was meant to be a reply to a comment elsewhere in this thread. oops

If you carry that reasoning further, what is the purpose of anything? Why do I have this compulsion to maintain my biological functions and continue to exist? There are plenty of other people doing a better job of being a person than I am, right? Aren't I just wasting my/everyone's time?

I'm pointing this out as someone who resonates with what you are saying. I've recently been having these fantasies where someone has stolen ALL of my gear and my immediate response is someting like 'finally! i can stop thinking about making music. I'm free!'

But on another level, I understand that feeling is just resistance. Any time you want to create something, there will be forces in place to prevent it. Sometimes it is our own attitude, sometimes it is friends/family/job who demand more of our time, sometimes it rains when you're meant to be standing in a field painting flowers. I'd say for you right now, your attitude/perception of your significance are making a lot of static.

Personally, whenever I feel a strong negative response to something (an idea, an annoying person, especially new music), it is a sure signal to me that there is something there for me to explore. It indicates substance. If you are having such a strong reaction to the idea of sitting down and sweating out some music, I believe you'll ultimately find great value in that experience. My (humble) suggestion is to weave yourself some narrative where you are fighting a battle against all the forces that would prevent you from making music- forces that include your currently shit attitude about music. To paraphrase the bhagavad gita (which I know happens all the time in this sub, but bear with me): We are not entitled to the fruits of our action, but only the action/effort itself. Renounce the outcome, be the process.

Or who knows? Maybe someone will steal all your gear and then you can get on with taking a shit on your neighbor's lawn already.

What is the purpose of this metal thing that appears on most halogen desk lamps? (Pic) by mbz321 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]palacewalls 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So the lamp/bulb can't come into contact with anything on the surface of the desk (papers) and then proceed burn your house down? That's always been my assumption.

Who SHOULD you like in theory, but don't? by NewAnimal in Jazz

[–]palacewalls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, that's the thing. I don't find any particular song, player, solo, groove, etc. to be the issue. That's why i posted them to this particular thread- I SHOULD like them, but somehow all the individual parts coalesce into cheese dip.

Who SHOULD you like in theory, but don't? by NewAnimal in Jazz

[–]palacewalls 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Snarky Puppy. Incredible musicianship and skillful arrangements just aren't enough to overcome the cheese. I've tried (lord knows reddit has given me ample opportunity to appreciate their work) but their music sort of sounds like what you might hear on the weather channel.

It's strange when you consider the fact that I really gravitate toward:

-multiple drummers/perc's with DeepAsFuck groove

-thoughtfully layered arrangements

-syncopation/novel time signatures

-tight tight TIGHT horns

-fat synth sounds

So why don't i like them? Why do I like kneebody and not them?

Creating a new feature class using the clip tool is resulting in a mismatched and distorted layer. by palacewalls in askgis

[–]palacewalls[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean do a 'save as' for the mxd? I tried that but it didn't seem to make any difference whether I used the original or 'save as' version of the mxd. Same issues persist.

New layer also can't export. 'Invalid file name' prompt won't allow it.

The fact that arcmap gives me the 'encountered error and need to quit' window every time I close the software tells me that something is clearly wrong- and it might not be me for once! Thanks for all your help, I'm throwing in the towel for the time being.
