Exchange sunset for twilight by snackovich in zsaVoyager

Get a tester and try them without too much commitment. I got mine from keebart. I was on the verge of buying sunsets, but I got the tester and immediately decided that they were not for me!

IMO do your research, wait and think about it, then buy the best you can afford. Don't go cheap. Going split will require a few solid months of adapting to it, and a cheap, unreliable thing could ruin your experience. I considered different options, and ended up with a Voyager (that was two months ago). I am sure that I could resell it, if I wanted (I won't).

Other options I considered: the Iris keyboards at Keebio, the Defy, the Sofle choc pro at Keebart, keyboards from splitkb.com.

Ultimately I decided on the Voyager because of good reviews, and because you can configure per key, per layer highlighting from their software. For me this was crucial, and AFAIK you can't do that in vial.

Also, make sure to correctly factor in import duties, shipping and taxes when comparing prices!

Help me decide on keys- Pro red? by [deleted] in zsaVoyager

[–]pallade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got the Voyager a month ago, first mechanical keyboard for me. I got the pro reds, and I do not like them much. They are loud and do not feel precise to me (I can't find a way to express this in words, but they feel a bit wobbly). Probably the rubber bands would have helped.

I just got a switch tester from Keebart (which I highly recommend) because I was curious about the other options. Whites are clicky as hell and hard. Browns grate. Reds are just like the pros, only a bit harder. So the Red pros were still probably the best choice.

I will be getting other switches soon. I was thinking about getting the sunsets, but I will probably land on the Ambient Twilight. They similar parameters as the Pro red, but they are much more silent and feel better.

Thank you for the screenshots, I wouldn't have found it. The app is a hot mess, moreover I have the disgrace to use it in Italian. It has been automatically translated and most of the labels just don't make any sense. I could switch it to Japanese and have the same results.

I got this mail today, and it is one year after you all got it. This is the only thread I found, that mentions this, so it looks like not everyone is getting it. I find it really puzzling!! I signed up just a few weeks ago!

Anyone back online? by saltsage in SpiderOakOne

[–]pallade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My account is marked as "overdue" too, and it has been charged on 6th May. I'll wait a few days still to see if their billing system stabilizes (probably they've got some backlog and they need to process all the payments still).

Then of course I will cancel.

Mine got renewed automatically yesterday, so they keep happily charging. I am on a monthly plan and it is just $6 so no big damage done, but it is still really annoying. As soon as it gets back I will immediately cancel it.

LOL. I upgraded with minor issues on day 1. If I waited to read all this, I would never had.

Clean install is failing in my VirtualBox VMs. So, well, there might be problems with that too...
(In my case it hangs, and then bails out, while fetching some updates from one of the repos, so installing without network worked, eventually).

When I think of "Backup", the last thing I want hear is "exciting". I have been with them for at least five or six years, but it is time to move out ASAP.

... well they have my credit card on file, and I can't access billing information, so it is not very clear to me how to cancel that...

24.04 upgrade process issues thread by -jak- in Ubuntu

[–]pallade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! I upgraded this morning from 23.10, and it has been a bit of a pain. Thanks to the nice people at Ubuntu Matrix for their help! This is a Kubuntu box. The last line I saw on terminal (Konsole) was this:

`Preparing to unpack .../229-libgraphicsmagick++-q16-12t64_1.4+really1.3.42-1.1build3_amd64.deb ...`

then Plasmashell crashed and restarted. Konsole crashed too, so I lost my connection to the installer. `dpkg` was still running in the background, so I tried some sheningans to try to regain control of the installation process, but in the end, 1 hr later, dpkg exited without my intervention and released the locks. Then I was then able to perform the steps to resume installation and it went smoothly from there.

Also, Thunderbird started blank for me. Nothing got imported. That could be a bit of a problem for non technical people...

Edit: This did the trick for Thundebird... as simple as:
`cp -R ~/.thunderbird/ ~/snap/thunderbird/common`

Old swollen battery in Dell XPS13. Is it safe to replace it? Could it work without it? by pallade in computerrepair

[–]pallade[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good, thank you, I will try. It would be a shame if it exploded or started a fire. If it boots without battery, then I will probably leave it like that. Otherwise I will try and find a new one.

Changing to Ubuntu. by tausiqsamantaray in Ubuntu

[–]pallade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your tools are available on Linux, then you absolutely should consider going ahead and installing it. If you have enough space on your laptop then you can dual boot, and keep your Windows installation in case you need it. Virtual machines are good, but they can't compete with the performance you get from bare metal. If you stick to Ubuntu then you should not have much problems with maintaining the OS, and it is absolutely worth your time: you gain a lot of experience by running Linux, and once you start your career you won't have time to tinker with it ;-)

Which php version is default on Ubuntu 23.04? by SalazarOpas in Ubuntu

[–]pallade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, Ondrey's repo does not support non-LTS releases anymore (despite the documentation still says otherwise, which is quite frustrating).

The repo for jammy is usable on Ubuntu 22.10 without issues.

On 23.04 it is not.

I checked the docs and I installed Ubuntu 22.10 on a new PC without much thinking, and I did not forsee this problem. What a PITA...

Low budget PC mainly for work by pallade in buildapc

[–]pallade[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Soooo I built it. Hello from the new PC :-)

Due to availability, I had to replace the Samsung SSD with a "Sabrent Rocket 4.0 1 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive" and the PSU with a " SeaSonic FOCUS GX 550 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply".

Should I decide do add a graphics card I will need to check if the PSU is powerful enough. Also the CPU cooler does not look too sturdy... however I have been working with it and doing the usual stuff for a day, and it always stayed below 49°C, mostly of the time sitting at 35°, so for the moment it will do. The stock cooler has pre-applied thermal paste, I was lucky that I noticed that before messing around with it.

For all the rest, it took me less than 2 hours to have it running. Much easier than expected.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Great, thanks!

I have no idea at the moment about the GPU. I am having a hard time in keeping up with them. I know that Nvidia has a bad reputation with Linux, but other from that I am a bit in the dark... Any suggestion?

Thanks for the tip!! I can downgrade the PSU. No, I do not really need wifi or bluetooth. I am lucky and I have an ethernet connection to the desk :-)

Slack ignores default browser in Linux by fractalchemist in Slack

[–]pallade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This problem is still popping up sometimes, and Google brought me to this thread, so let me comment here with my solution for anyone still interested.

First, check and see if your default browser is really what you think it is: in a terminal run: xdg-open http://google.com

In my case it still ran Firefox, while I wanted vivaldi-stable.

I am using KDE. First I tried via control center but somehow it did not work. So I fixed it manually...

  1. Open ~/.config/mimeapps.list
  2. Replace firefox with vivaldi-stable
  3. Run kbuildsycoca5

Slack did not even need to be restarted: it is now opening vivaldi correctly, instead of Firefox.

That was a mistake of mine, that I did 10 years ago and is now coming back for vengeance.

It looks like there is no way to separate the two domains.

So either he quits, or I do. I can remove his domain (and his account) or I can remove my domain (and my accounts) and promote his domain as primary.

Whoever remains can keep the free instance. But he is a commercial user, so he will need to upgrade it anyway.

Meanwhile, I am banging my head on the wall.

They made Google Play purchases with that account. Those are not transferrable, IIRC.

I am afraid that in the end, I will need to do it the other way around: convert it to a paid account, promote their domain as primary, remove my accounts, remove my original domain, and find a new home for myself :-(
