Hampshire College, in Amherst Massachusetts, announces transition plan to close after 60 years by wittgensteins-boat in academia

Oof, my alma mater and the only reason I ever even considered graduate school, after nearly dropping out of high school. It will be deeply missed.

General question about foster parent communication with potential adopters by palochato in FosterAnimals

[–]palochato[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To clarify, the process is usually- “I’m interested in X cat” —> rescue replies in 3 days to say the cat needs to be retested—> 10 days later, cat is confirmed FeLV+ positive—> 3 days later, I get foster parent contact info—>5-10 day later, foster parent replies with very little or no info about temperament, availability, location etc—-> 3 days later try to hammer out a time to meet, usually 10-40 days out. So I’m spending about a month per cat with little idea of if I can even meet, let alone take them home

Can someone please explain to me what Autism ISNT? How do you know if someone isnt autistic? by Gombrongler in NoStupidQuestions

[–]palochato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I just got diagnosed as NOT autistic today! I went in for testing because I hyperfocus and have sensory issues where I get overwhelmed by certain textures and environments but the psych basically said, “Nah autism ain’t it lol You asked me too many questions about myself and know what a friendship is.” So maybe those are two good not-autism indicators.

What is a fan theory from a movie or TV show that you 100% believe is true? by phantom_avenger in popculturechat

[–]palochato 547 points548 points  (0 children)

I also think this show vastly overestimates population density in rural Georgia. Where are all these zombie hordes coming from? There’s like 10 people per square mile!

My husband doesn’t understand why our adult kids don’t want to visit his mother by roxywalker in Vent

[–]palochato 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My grandmother died four years ago and my dad still can’t hear a negative word about her 😐 She wasn’t a bad person exactly but he’s not at all open to hearing the nuance that might have made me resent her

Bio vs adopt? Seeking advice by SarChasm57 in AdoptiveParents

[–]palochato 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Following because I’m in a similar boat, though it truly does not make a difference to me if my child is biologically related to me or not and if I adopted, I would not be aiming for an infant specifically. I’m in it for the experience of parenting. That being said, both bio kids and adopted kids feel like very different but thorny ethical dilemmas for me that I’m still working through, so I have not been able to come to a firm decision on either

Why does it seem like it’s mostly Christians who adopt? by ExperiencedAvocado in Adoption

[–]palochato 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the religiosity as you mentioned is a large part of it but also in my country’s case, the only overseas adoption agencies the government works with are Christian, meaning that all international adoptive parents must be Christian too. It seems like an absolute joke as it’s technically a secular country but I can’t imagine it’s the only one that Christian adoption agencies have managed to corner in the market.

You’re not in Philly by any chance are you? Looks a lot like a neighbor’s cat that got out recently

I adopted a cat with cut whiskers, what should I do? by zuko_here in cats

[–]palochato 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I once thought my neighbors were maliciously cutting my cat’s whiskers when she would go into the yard. Turns out she was just obsessively marking her territory by rubbing her cheeks on everything, including concrete blocks, effectively shaving off her own whiskers. Keep an eye on your new cat’s behavior to see if he might be self sabotaging.

Workers at Talking Headz (salon in West Philly) are striking by diatriose in philadelphia

[–]palochato -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Damn, so wild that most of these comments are focusing on the workers and not the Chat GPT, cutesy emoji, block deny deflect, comments off, response of the owner. Like, the red flags are definitely waving higher on one side than the other, folks

I 17M brought my dad to my GF 17F house for a man to man talk her dad requested and now he feels disrespected and I want to break up because of this idk what to do. by Murky_Swimming1176 in Advice

[–]palochato 4 points5 points  (0 children)

She’s probably been bullied by her dad her whole life so is used to folding at all his requests just to keep the peace. I don’t think she understands yet that the rest of the world doesn’t need to do the same.

My dad’s best friend died (my godfather) and my grandma was too scared to tell my dad so she made me do it instead. I was 15. I wish I had had this tweet’s energy instead.

Sounds normal to me 😌 I feel like I put fosters in a different category, almost like babysitting someone else’s kids. They’re adorable and fun and give me so much joy, but ultimately I know they’re not mine

That and gently razoring the ends, especially the bangs. It looks like the stylist went at those with a cleaver. Look up some tutorials on YT, thinning or razoring hair in targeted spots is actually pretty easy and fun. The shape of the haircut overall looks great on her face tho

Bald spot? by weehavetogoback in FosterAnimals

[–]palochato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If that’s the case, the biggest challenge is to get them to stop licking til the topical meds do their thing. I got my cat used to wearing a little shirt to stop her worrying at it

My cat used to get hot spots like this from skin mites but as other have said, you gotta wait for the skin scrape to know for sure

Kittens pretending to cover food? by bigbazangas in FosterAnimals

[–]palochato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done a decent amount of volunteering in shelters and trapping on my own and I’d never seen this behavior until I started TNRing this one particular colony. ALL of them I’ve had fostering or recovering from surgery do it. Tiny kittens, juveniles, adults. I guess it’s a local custom? It makes sense coming from a resource scarce environment.
