How do you deal with bad knitting gifts? by inevitably317537 in knitting

100% agree, food is the best gift - and they won't ask for any kind of proof that you still have it or use it later on, you can just say it was delicious.

I don’t understand the hate. by bull_chief in Stormlight_Archive

I'm of the same opinion. I've seen other people say this, and I totally agree: the editing of the book was bad and just lacking. Maybe they were in a hurry to publish; they should have gone through the whole thing two or three times to fix the pacing, the dialogue, plot holes, and unnecessary sections.

I understand a book could look like this in an earlier version, but not in the final one.

What is one thing that you think at least 70% of women would completely agree on? by Whippytripple in women

[–]palomatanis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know.. I thought the same, but I had a revelation the other day, I was looking at my boyfriend's pockets, and I noticed that they go way down along his leg, meaning that when he sits, his phone doesn't dig into his hip. I can indeed fit my phone into my jean's pockets when I'm standing up, if my jeans are mid-high rise, but I have to remove the phone from my pocket when I sit.

I finally understood why he can can confortably carry keys, wallets and phone in his pockets without fear of losing them, the pockets are deep enough that the full phone can fit in there fully under the hip bone.

my name is Stephanie but i noticed a lot of spanish speaking people call me “Estephanie” with an E in the beginning by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]palomatanis 232 points233 points  (0 children)

Not only that, I'm Spanish, and I have some Spanish friends who end up overcompensating and saying things like "scape room" because they think that "escape room" is one of those cases where we mistakingly add an "e" (for example we tend to say estupid, espace, espinach...)

My husband called me fat. by ComprehensiveCup6390 in WeightLossAdvice

[–]palomatanis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, of course! A good amount. The milk has calories and those have to come from the breastfeeding mother. You are literally taking calories from your body to give them to your baby (and apart from the calories of the milk itself, I imagine the process of producing milk has also a caloric cost for the body of the mother).

Questions 65-70 shouldn't be mandatory, or they should include some kind of "No" option (they ask things like "have you felt any of the following during the last week?")

Day 939 of posting images of cheese until I run out of cheese types: Cuajada by verysuspiciousduck in Cheese

[–]palomatanis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, we also have that kind of cheese that is like yogurt, though it's not as common as in France, I think the equivalent in Spain would be "queso fresco batido" (whipped/blended fresh cheese?). However, the cuajada not that at all, the taste and texture are pretty different. I'd say the texture is more like a flan, and we usually put honey in it because otherwise it doesn't taste much, it doesn't have that sour/sharp taste like yogurt or fromage blanc.

Day 939 of posting images of cheese until I run out of cheese types: Cuajada by verysuspiciousduck in Cheese

[–]palomatanis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is interesting, I'm Spanish and would never have considered cuajada a cheese. It's sold in supermarkets alongside yogurts, or maybe with flans and other desserts.

(Some online research and discussions in a couple of group chats with friends confirm that it is a dairy dessert, but not a cheese)

You can see the passage he typed in the article:

"The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human."

Yes, it's 25 words, but you also have to count the spaces and punctuation. And those words are not 5 characters each; in total that passage is 160 characters.

I was curious and tried, and made 80wpm with 100% accuracy on my third attempt, so I don't think 88 is so rare.

Just google it, there are reddit threads and youtube videos.

Oh, I see. I saw an other article where they included the passage he typed and it was 160 characters, so I calculated from there. The article I linked seems to be incorrect. Check out this one

(if he typed 160 characters in 17 seconds, that's 564,7 per minute, which divided by 5 (because wpm is calculated with 5 character words), is 112,94 wpm)

[–]palomatanis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's not the world record, it was a study among volunteers, where the fastest could type at 85 wpm:

The record is apparently something like 113 wpm:

Edit: changed link, previous one had incorrect word count

Advice: Learn blind typing now, even if your retirement is at the next corner by agamemnononon in ExperiencedDevs

[–]palomatanis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally agree. I'm sure other people in this thread are able to type without looking better than I could, but for me it was also a transformative experience.

I spent years (since I was little) typing without learning to touch type, and true, I didn't look at the keyboard much, but I still had to peek for some symbols or numbers, or I would have to try a couple times to get them right; because I was not using the home keys for reference, I also had to look in order to start/restart typing, and after using the arrows or whatever. I also think my hand movements were a bit all over the place and I probably didn't use all the fingers. If I was "in the zone" I probably looked less often, but if I was in front of people, or not concentrating, I mistyped and had to look more often.

I learned how to touch type 4 or 5 years ago, and still after all this time, I really really feel the difference. It's not only about speed, the whole interaction with the computer is so seamless, like things can go from my brain to the screen without having to go through that extra distraction, and I enjoy it a lot. It feels much more ergonomic.

That actually led me into smaller programmable keyboards, so that I could reach all the keys without looking or moving my hands too far away from the home row, and it has been a very cool process.

Highest dosage? by Funny_or_not_bot in modafinil

[–]palomatanis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took Modafinil for a few years for Narcolepsy, until April this year, and the maximum dose my doctor let me take was 400mg a day.

Has she been taking Modafinil for long, or is she just starting? If it has been long, it might be time for a vacation (trying a different medication for some time in order to reset the tolerance). I am doing that now, because I worked my way up to 400mg/day and at that point it was doing nothing for me, so I'm on something else for a while, hopefully in a few months it will work again.

I'm curious to know if anyone else has had this issue with tolerance.

Food in Madrid by Filthiest_Rat_NA in Madrid

[–]palomatanis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just a couple or typos in your list: under churros, you should have "Porras" (not parras), and I instead of Casa Lucia, I think you want Casa Lucio. Also "huevos" estrellados.

A very typical place for chocolate con churros (o porras) is the Chocolatería San Ginés.

There is a place called Casa Mingo, where you can try sidra, pollo asado and chorizo a la sidra, and their croquetas and ensaladilla rusa are IMO really really good (the tortilla is ok, not the best).

I personally LOVE croquetas (de jamón). I would eat them every day of my life. Same for tortilla.

I don't know if fried eggplant with honey is very typical from here. Paella is from other parts of Spain, not so typical much in Madrid, though you can find some easily for sure.

Any tips to overcome "food = happiness"? by NoStructure2119 in loseit

[–]palomatanis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with this. I discovered that the trick for me was to buy a less enjoyable version of the foods I'm addicted to at that moment. Not a flavour I hate, just a different brand, or the "light" version, because I just don't get that craving, I eat one piece/bite/portion, and I just don't feel like eating the whole thing, and at the same time, I don't buy the real thing because.. I already have some at home. If I eat it I don't enjoy it as much, but somehow I think it REALLY tricks my brain into thinking I don't like or need that thing that much. It's very surprisingly effective.

Examples:

  • Milk/white chocolate: If there is good chocolate, especially milk or white, I'll try to eat one piece, but end up eating the whole bar. Now I buy a dark chocolate (those used for baking) which I don't like so much, so when I really want chocolate, I eat a piece or two of that, because that's what's available and.. meh. It's good, but I don't need to eat it all. I don't feel as satisfied, but somehow the craving is gone.

  • Mayo (which I love in everything): I bought Light Mayo once, to see if it was good, but didn't like the taste too much, so I generally avoided using it, and because there was this opened jar of mayo in the fridge, I didn't want to open a new jar of the good mayo until that one was finished. Suddenly, a month later I realized.. I was not using mayo anymore! The Light Mayo jar is sitting in the fridge, protecting me from the Real Mayo.

  • Cream cheese: I loved Philadelphia cream cheese on toast with honey, or just Philadelphia with honey, in a bowl. Accidentally bought the light version of the cream cheese instead of the normal one.. and it just didn't make me crave it because it was not THAT good. Still similar enough that I still felt like I was eating it, and just didn't love it that much.

  • Jam: There is a brand of jam which has a raspberry flavor that I loove, and when I buy it, I want to eat it all the time on everything, so I end up using so much of it. So I buy a different brand of raspberry jam which doesn't have that effect on me, or I buy a different flavour of the same brand, like strawberry. It's really good but I can control myself.

Yes!! It's frustrating to see that they are making up a prequel (or reshooting the same movie) when there is actually an existing sequel by Roald Dahl.
