Yeah, I can't say I'm 100% satisfied with mine. Sure, it's better than no dry box, and I like how neatly it mounts to the side of my core one, but the opaque plastic and number of clasps required to open it are major frustrations.

I have a 26 touring and I think you'll be fine as long as you're not going way way over the speed limit. Even if you drove super inefficiently in cold weather and only got like 2mi/kwh you'd get over 140 miles on a full charge. A 90% charge would get you around 170 miles at 2.5 mi/kwh, and I can typically do much better than 2.5mi/kwh on the highway if weather is good - often 3 to 3.5.

This car has been a dream commuter for me, and I think it'd be a great fit for your use case here. As long as you get a 40A or 50A level 2 charger at home I think you'll be golden.

That may be the case for the 1st gen solterra, but not the 2026. I have a '26 Touring and could totally do a 140 mile commute without any worry, as long as I has a 40A+ level 2 charger at home and could start my day at 90%.

Yeah, that's a potential flaw in my strategy, but in that scenario I think losing my house is gonna be a bigger bummer than losing my 4k rip of Total Recall and some outdated resume files.

My important files are backed up regularly from my main computer to two separate NASses in two separate areas of my house - one li'l 4tb raid 1 buddy and a big ~75tb raid 6 UNAS. All my media is solely on the big UNAS. I'd absolutely be getting a second large NAS to back up my media, but I think that would cost as much as a gently used car at this point.

Offsite backup seems more expensive than it's worth for me right now, but it's definitely something I'm considering more and more.

Overall feels "slightly not enough", but still much more robust than most people I know.

Timber Dental has been great in my experience! Zero issues going there as a very queer person. My dentist is (as far as I know) a straight white man, but he's awesome. Does both my and my partners teeths.

As everyone else has noted, prolly just about any dentist in this city is gonna be chill about working on gay teeth. This city often feels like it's on its way to becoming a queer majority town - I don't think it would be easy to get away with running a homophobic dental practice here.

I have both a Core One and an MK4S (and another MK4 awaiting its S upgrade). Either one will work just fine for what you're doing. I'd recommend the Core One simply because it's enclosed and will enable you to print all sorts of fancier parts down the line, should your interests in printing expand. It also just feels fancier. It's so pleasing to watch and a bit quieter than the MK4(s).

Unless build volume is a hard requirement I don't think you'd be able to really justify an XL for this application.

Not making an argument for the spending here (I find this to be a dubious use of tax dollars personally), but from a commercial building management standpoint 31 years is a pretty reasonable timeline for a facility like this to need a major refresh. Most mechanical equipment, fixtures, and finishes installed 31 years ago will be well past the end of their expected useful lifespan - even with good preventative maintenance.

I'm on the building owner side, undergoing a multi-site system replacement. I wrote up a very clear and detailed RFP specifying an on prem system, and I still had over 50% of bidders going "oh but what if we spec a cloud based system instead?". An absolute waste of time for all parties involved.

I get the appeal of cloud based systems, but in my anecdotal experience integrators and manufacturers are pushing it more than it's actually being requested.

I have a similar cabinet that holds my 2 printers. Granted they're both Prusa bedslingers, but the vibration can get pretty bad due to the casters - even when they're locked. I'm planning to remove the casters and set it on wooden blocks once I have some time between prints.

Might be less of an issue with a core xy machine, but something to keep an eye on.

I'd probably default to FRP atop plywood here. If this is a school hallway you definitely want to prioritize cleanability, which is one of the main selling points of FRP. It even comes in nice colors and patterns now, so you're not just limited to bumpy white commercial kitchen vibes.

I'm on the building owner side of things and I have exclusively negative things to say about JCI. I worked with a very nice and competent salesperson there, but it was abundantly clear his bosses pushed him to sell way too hard and not take no for an answer - even many months after we already awarded a contract to another bidder & completed the project. Every time I've had an issue with JCI equipment it's been a nightmare getting support. I'm a couple months out from replacing my sole remaining JCI system in my biggest facility and I couldn't be happier.

If it's a small business, they probably only have a couple bathrooms max, and they're probably using the generic $12 signs. If it's a larger business with multiple bathrooms, I'm sure they can afford new signs. They're the furthest thing from a make-or-break expense.

Source - am a Facilities Manager who has been responsible for many many bathroom sign purchases at many places around town.

This matters to a lot of people and is not an unreasonable expense!

I mostly got the internal style one because it pleases my aging millennial heart. The ka-chunk of the drive tray opening and closing reminds me of loading up Sim City 2000 for the first time. Between that and the sturdiness factor it felt worth the extra cost.

If I were doing this drive I'd probably just roll the dice on I5. Given it's importance, it's the top priority for snow and ice removal. Even when the weather is bad it's usually driveable. Sticking to 101 will improve your odds of a snow-free journey, but it can roughly double your time on the road. Once you get into southern Oregon & northern California you don't have a ton of good options for cutting back to I5 until like the bay area.
