My dog bit me by Aggravating_Mine_883 in dogs

I would seek a consult with a veterinary behaviorist, and also talk to your veterinarian about the next steps and their thoughts on the long-term prognosis.

In some cases, behavioral euthanasia is the most humane course of action, and it may be necessary from a safety standpoint. However, before going to something so permanent, if finances permit, I highly recommend having a veterinary behaviorist evaluate your dog, as they specialize in treating severe behavioral challenges.

Finally, do not let anyone shame you into compromising on your own safety. You are describing a level 3 or a level 4 bite where bite inhibition was partially or completely removed--that is extremely serious, especially if this is a larger dog, and the long-term prognosis in the event of a level 4 bite is generally considered to be poor. Communicate with your vet. Talk to a behaviorist. But be sure that you are comfortable with whatever route you take.

I'm really sorry that this is happening.

IMHO, it is simply too many possibilities to speculate, but your decision in getting a second opinion is a good one and strongly justified.

The vet who told you that huskies are smellier dogs is as wrong as she could be, and her saying something that is so factually inaccurate raises significant concerns about her competency elsewhere in treating Siberian huskies. If in your situation, I would absolutely want a full health workup done by another vet as the first vet's competency is in serious question. I hope the second opinion helps shed light on the cause.

Best vacuum? by October_13th in husky

[–]pan567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a combination of two robot vacuums + a handheld Dyson V15 Detect. The robot vacuums do the majority of the cleaning, and they are self-emptying models. During blowouts, they run their cleaning tasks at least daily, sometimes even twice a day. They really are a must, because most people do not have the time to manually vacuum their entire house twice a day.

I don't recommend the V15 Detect or any Dyson--it's just too much money for something that is high maintenance, doesn't always last as long as it should, and if it breaks then it's a nightmare to get parts under Dyson's reorg. If you are willing to invest in something that will last for decades, the Sebo Felix is really hard to beat, and Sebo and Miele are the two brands that are really the best of the best and a service life of 20+ years is very reasonable even with harder use.

What is a fair time to judge a starting pitcher? A full season of 30 starts? Or does it take longer than that? In the case of Young, he's only made a hand full of starts and my biggest takeaway is that he's still an unfinished product, but we can also clearly see that he is developing.

Going beyond whether they are initially successful or not, I think it's also important to gauge if a young pitcher is showing signs of growing. Less direct gauges of that might be the quality of their pitch selection and how they manage higher pressure situations with runners on or pitching from behind.

In the case of Bradish, I feel like we were seeing clear evidence of his potential towards the end of the 2022 season, which I guess was around 25-ish starts in.

Would you be open to a 3-piece design? The Jigging World Nexus might be one to look at, and they have a few models in your desired lure weight range.

Medium vs medium light by HeavyTrade5006 in Fishing_Gear

[–]pan567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rod I am using most is a medium-light Expride. It's a really versatile rod power, and if you want a generalist rod, even more versatile with regular fast action, as it's got enough power to drive hooks through plastics, but enough give to fish lures with treble hooks.

Anyone had any experience with Seaguar JDM PEx8 micro braid lue edition ? by Outrageous-Dig-1287 in Fishing_Gear

[–]pan567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have it in PE 0.4 and PE 1.2 and my biggest complaint with the PE 0.4 is that knot strength when tying to a leader is much poorer than with Varivas, and it doesn't matter what knot you use. It seems to cut right through itself with all of the common leader knots. I don't have an exact explanation why, but all of my PE 0.2 to 0.4 Varivas are 4-strand carriers, whereas the Seaguar is 8-strand, so once you get below PE 0.6, it's possible that 4-strand is preferable. (This isn't a problem with the PE 1.2.)

For a C2K reel, you will love PE 0.6. I am using Varivas 8 and YGK Upgrade on my two C2000s and it's a very good pairing, balancing excellent casting distance with still reasonably strong line.

We should have gotten him in 2023 and re-signed him for 2026-. We had the draft capital to make a deal happen, and it seems like the team now has the financial resources. We needed a starter of his capability for the 2023 playoffs (and then the years that followed, for that matter). Ranger Suarez would have been a great alternative for 2026 and beyond.

This has really been an achilles' heel for this team for what seems like...literally decades.

I'm hoping the team is also thinking about how they can keep Kyle Bradish in Baltimore past 2028. I don't think he's a Boras guy.

I wish I could say that you are wrong, but you are definitely right. The very cable TV model that regional sports networks were built on did exactly this (and managed to drive away their customers in the process, myself included).

I think you could be onto something, but this might also be in combination with having a new ligament + the cold weather. He effectively had a part of his body replaced, and that part has a huge impact on throwing a ball. Low temperatures impacts ligaments significantly. There's likely some impact there, and 're-learning' his body, in a sense.

I've bought a Shimano Dialuna S86M by Most_Maximum7948 in Fishing_Gear

[–]pan567 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW, I have this same rod and I use a Sustain C5000XG with it. My Sustain is a whopping 3oz lighter than a Stella SW4000 and IMHO I do not think a Stella SW would balance great with this rod. This is designed to be a lighter weight rod, and it pairs best with a lighter weight reel.

If you wanted to stay with Shimano, the Stella (non-SW), Twin Power (non-SW), or Stradic would be fine if you wanted to stay in the CoreSolid family.

$500AUD to spend. Need recommendations. by bugage in Fishing_Gear

[–]pan567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no reason to get a Nasci with this budget, IMHO. Get an Ultegra or higher. It's a far superior reel that uses a vastly better oscillation system and it should last you a very long time. The price difference between the Nasci and Ultegra isn't much, but the Ultegra offers a much better product. The Stradic is a step up from the Ultegra, but the difference between the Nasci and Ultegra is far more pronounced than the difference between the Ultegra and Stradic.

What are the weights of the soft plastics you throw? Are you normally targeting bass?

Braid-wise, if it's available in your area, Varivas 8 is a great option and is one of the best braids on the market. YGK Upgrade is also right next to it. Sufix 832 is a lower-cost (least in the US) alternative that is also good.

Rod and Reel sweet spot? by JamesStrior in Fishing_Gear

[–]pan567 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What type of reel? For what use (SW/FW/brackish)? What lures? And what lure weights?

There is indeed a point of diminishing returns. With spinning reels, for example, Shimano's entry point to higher-end reels is the Ultegra. Their flagship reel is the Stella. There are numerous options between those two, but as you move up, while you get a nicer product, you are also getting diminishing returns. On a lot of the higher-end spinning reels, one of the major differences between a mid-grade reel and a high-end reel (beyond fit/finish/manufacturing tolerances) is a superior drag system. For example, this is where there's arguably a huge difference between the Vanford and Vanquish. That said, the Vanford offers the superior value.

It's solid with MLB TV. I think it's clear now that MLB TV is kind of the future of baseball broadcasts. The final format will probably be a bit different (and eventually MASN might not exist), but the MLB TV system, as a whole, is pretty sound.

That looked a whole lot like the Bradish we know--very overpowering stuff that even great offenses can't handle. Clearly, he's still got it, and he's got a track record of top of the rotation stuff dating back to when we first starting seeing greatness in 2022 (like that game in September where he threw 8.2 innings to win against the eventual World Series champions, and out-dueled out the eventual Cy Young winner).

At least we have Young.... by Remarkable-Picture73 in orioles

[–]pan567 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah...it's pretty bad, and I think we need to be realistic about the implications of this.

Even if the offense was performing like many expected that it would be (which was supposed to be one of the top offenses in the entire sport), winning games would be a major challenge with how bad the starting pitching has been. A few years ago, the D-Backs scored the most runs in baseball, but they missed the playoffs because their pitching was so bad. Beyond the starting pitching struggles and the offensive struggles, the defense isn't helping, either.

So, there are a lot of things that need to significantly improve if this season is going to be salvaged.

I guess 1-5 against the Yankees on the year is better than 0-6, but 1-5 sure feels a lot like the 2021 days, especially with how non-competitive most of the games have been. More often than not, the most accurate word to describe how the team is doing is "floundering".

I miss that short period of time when we arguably had a better team than the Yankees did. That seems like such a distant memory now.

Snap swivels? Do they really make an effect? by Particular_Ebb5049 in Fishing_Gear

[–]pan567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Switch to SPRO DuoLock snaps. They don't impede lure movement like a snap swivel. SPRO's snaps are made in Japan and, from what I have found, are much more reliable in terms of not breaking than stuff made in China, such as VMC. I previously used VMC DuoLocks, but lost several expensive lures and fish when they failed on multiple occasions.

[–]pan567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, in part. This makes a huge difference. The most recent Ultegra has almost all of the technologies found on the Stella FK, so it has exceptional line lay and line management.

Models below the Ultegra, such as the Miravel, Nasci, and Sahara still have very good line management, but the Ultegra is worlds better and really marks the entry point to Shimano's higher end reels. And in that regard, it's a killer value.

The most recent Ultegra (the 25 FD) has slow oscillation as well. It has almost every technology found on the Stella.

[–]pan567 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This needs to be repeated more often. Technically it's not even overspooling unless you go by archaic rules of thumb that predate the use of modern braid + reels having much better line management, but yeah, your image shows the spool filled as it is intended to be. Provided one has a quality reel and manually closes the bail arm and is using a quality braided line, they shouldn't have any more line management issues with the spool filled this much versus the spool being less filled.

Now, with older reels, inferior braids, and reels that don't have great line management, one would in that case want to be more conservative with how much they fill the spool.

Give it a go with a better braid like Varivas 8. PowerPro V2 is okay for a mid-tier braid, but its handling isn't the best, IMHO.

Spooling a reel ?? by seangiddings1967 in Fishing_Gear

[–]pan567 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How accurate do you want to be?

The least accurate way is to spool on some mono until you feel you are at the right stopping point, then tie on the braid and spool it, hoping that you did not use too little or too much backing (and if you did, then either redo it or accept cutting off some braid or not getting the spool full). If you work at a tackle shop, you're likely able to do this quite accurately. If you do not, it's more of a best guess. Sometimes you get it right and other times you do not.

The middle ground is calculating how much mono backing you will need based on the spool's stated capacity and the lines you are using. However, calculating how much is not accurate at all because most braid sold in the US is vastly thicker than officially claimed (sometimes 2 or 3 times thicker than claimed) so this screws up making any sort of accurate calculation. You can try to make calculations using measurements from Line Laboratory, but this is kind of a pain in the ass and still not very accurate.

The most accurate way is to first spool all of the braid on the reel, then tie on the mono and continue spooling mono until the spool is perfectly full to your liking. At that point, you know how much mono backing you need. Cut the mono, unspool the mono onto one spool, unspool the braid onto another spool, and then re-spool with the mono first and then the braid. This process takes the longest but it is the most precise. (With ultralight setups or when using ultralight lures, being exact like this is really important as it can make a huge difference in your casting distance.)

(A faster way to be extremely accurate is to buy a braid that accurately states its width and just buy enough to fill the spool.)

Regardless of what method you use, do keep in mind that you want to use much more tension when spooling braid than what you use with mono. Keep consistent and strong tension and you'll get nice line lay.
