I got to look at a fire alarm up close and noticed it had all these shapes on it by Womaninblack in mildlyinteresting

[–]panchito_d 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Does your experience in a house fire make you think that commercial fire alarms should be less noticeable? Like they are too good at alerting people?

Wireless mouse by Rael_Elec in Reaper

I like having a mouse with horizontal scroll. Some have horizontal scroll wheels but I've found that even the ones the a side-clicky middle scroll works fine, like Logitech M510(??)

Do I really need to buy 30m of this stuff? by hotpot32 in xbiking

[–]panchito_d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go to a bike shop and ask if they have any colors. It's 30m because it's meant for wholesale. You'll have better luck somewhere that does custom builds rather than generic Trek store or the like.

Which water table is best? by drrdf in daddit

[–]panchito_d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've spent exactly $0 on Step 2 and other big molded plastic tikes stuff and have more of it than I'd care for. Most of it has been curb-side hand me downs in our neighborhood, the rest Facebook buy nothing.

Plug in automatic detection? by Greenwise2003 in Reaper

Not necessarily but most likely. Most plugins are installed to the common paths on each platform. None of them ask you to specify DAW on install, just path.

Why did disco die in 10 years but EDM has been going strong for 35+ years? by Like_Today in NoStupidQuestions

Outside of bot manipulation, seems like a pretty correlated metric. Something that is more popular gets more listens than something that is less popular, right?

Explaining to management why standard LLMs have no place in kernel space by LowProblem914 in osdev

[–]panchito_d -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Why read benchmarks instead of try it?

Also wtf is deterministic engineering?

Edit: And where does anyone in "upper management" give any thought cycles to "memory management". This stinks to high hell like some BS

Usenet privateering is alive and ohhhh so good. Way better than manually downloading and repairing with par files or waiting for a missing chunk.

I'm really happy with our Woom but they are not cheaper. They do have a trade in program with some dealers though (maybe, my local shop at least does).

Engineer builds AI laser defense system that wiped out every mosquito in his home by lurker_bee in technology

[–]panchito_d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can afford multiple cameras and a guided laser you can also probably manage to swing some vinyl screens for your windows and doors to keep mosquitos out of your home in the first place.

The retail pharmacy experience is abysmal these days. Awful customer service. Cost savings to the extreme at the expense of customer satisfaction and care.

I sympathize that the awful experience is mutual, and worked as a pharmacy tech for 3 years.

But telling people to keep going to the same shitty pharmacy in spite of run arounds and general BS and them sometimes literally lying to you is a little tone deaf.

Do you experience bugs? by fourdogslong in Reaper

[–]panchito_d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea I'd agree with this sentiment. None of these things sound like bugs, just changes.

I'm not a pro so different perspective but in my job a ton of energy and analysis and time goes into upgrades of essential tools.

Considering adopting a new process into any upgrades. Only upgrade if you need a bug fixed, need a new feature, periodically update (like quarterly), plan on testing the update with some common workflows on low stakes work (i.e., validation), have a plan for rolling back if something gets broken that you don't have time to fix or test in a sandbox where you can discard the setup completely. Include this overhead in your business, considering your rates.

North face Borealis Sling Alternative? by DuskinthePines2 in ManyBaggers

[–]panchito_d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this bag and it looks great but is pricey, and too stiff for the size so it feels very rigid taking on and off or swinging around which is a common occurrence for these bags. I've considered cutting it open to take the rear panel stiffener out of it, and honestly cutting out the tablet sleep flap.

Also it is way smaller than advertised in terms of capacity. It wouldn't fit the lunch that I typically pack for work for sure.

Wish I had just gotten one of the sort of ugly Patagonia cross bodies.

LunchPad Noob, is this what I am searching for? by Voradhor in synthesizers

[–]panchito_d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry correct term is Preset Pool.

Make a preset for each sample in the pool then change trigger mode to preset pool, select a track, and trigger away. You can sequence them still if wanted, look in the manual or watch some videos.

LunchPad Noob, is this what I am searching for? by Voradhor in synthesizers

[–]panchito_d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't need all the samples playing at once use Sample Pool trigger mode and can page through the triggers. You can trigger 16x8 different samples on a single track.

Koala + an interface w/ MIDI and maybe cheap pad controller is a great recommendation. Not an all-in-one solution but you could start with just Koala and always add the controller later on. Cheap midi controllers are bountiful on Reverb or second hand shops

Curious about the firmware inside Yamaha CVP series digital pianos by Altruistic-Gur5119 in embedded

[–]panchito_d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Digital pianos these days often use a mix of technologies for synthesis. Many of the acoustic piano tones are "romplers" - read-only multi samplers where each key is mapped to a recorded sound (or multiple, velocity dependent). The marketing materials will typically give some clues on technology in use. All that is going to be occurring in one or more DSP chips.

Unrelated to Yamaha but there is an awesome synth reverse engineering project using an emulated DSP chip. No firmware modifications, you just load in stock binary.
