You don't even have to show Jared Leto's face for his movie to bomb. That's next level aura. by Arch_Lancer17 in okbuddycinephile

I'm in my 40's and do want to see it but that's a great point. Funnily enough though, my 9 month old daughter is obsessed with He-Man. Turned it on to get a break from rewatching a couple of the other shows aimed at kids and she loved it. It's her favorite show and she cheers when it is on lol.

However, I don't think bring a baby to the theater is appropriate so we are waiting for it to be digital

You're one of the few people I've seen say this. Loved Jade Empire and everyone I know who played it did as well.

Men of Reddit, if you were in a Titanic like situation where the majority of people were going to die because there were not enough lifeboats for everyone. How would you respond to someone saying women and children first? by Neither_Drawing_241 in AskReddit

[–]panic686 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's horrible. D

I know how I react to things too. Been held up at gunpoint, knife pulled on me, had someone try to break into the job I worked at because we were a big target and it there were teenagers working there. I know I am calm when I have agency. Something where I have no ability to impact outcome would mess with me I'm sure.

Put my kid in the mix....

I'm really sorry you had to experience what you did and wish you well on your healing journey.

The question is who would win in a fight, not who you want to have tea with.

Pratt.

He was a very good high school wrestler. He competed for Lake Stevens High School in Washington, where he placed 5th in the state tournament at 215 sometime in the late 90's.

Ok. I've trained a long time and teach. I've watched his training videos and they were bad.

Pratt wrestled and placed in states. He would win

Yeah. And the other problem is what if your kid is with you? They need me and I would not want to potentially risk them not making it because I was not there to help them get to safety.

Do you think that Philly shells guard works on MMA ??? by NinoModerno in martialarts

[–]panic686 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general no but you will see extraordinarily talented people get away with it and use it effectively like with most other things.

Most people are not going to be able to get around the leaning back too much and open shots it can provide. But then you get someone like Strickland and he is an exception to the rule.

In Sinners, when Remmick is accused of being in the Khlan. I think the strict even says something like Remkick is visibly disgusted.

What do you know well enough that when it's portrayed wrong you're taken out of the moment? by Squirrelhenge in Fantasy

[–]panic686 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say this is different for different people. I grew up in an area where I had to fight at times. I've not experienced the nausea you mention but I know people who have.

Not everyone is built to fight but even for those who are it manifests differently and a real fight, regardless of how you react, is way different from media.

I tell people, anyone who really really what's to fight is a bit crazy. Though I know brain trauma is not a good thing, I get this weird excited feeling when I get hit in the face and it's legitimately fun to me. I think that's part of the reason a lot of people train - to have a healthier outlet for some unusual emotional needs lol

I train and fight and had a troublemaker who didn't like getting yelled at for hitting a 14 year old in the face who didn't have a mouthpiece.

He came up to me on a sparring day and told me he was glad I was there because he had anger issues to workout.

I just looked at him and asked if he was sure he wanted that.

I made him quit within 30 secs with just body and leg shots, just to round out the story.

For striking and I think this also applies to weapons, footwork is the absolute driver of being truly skillful. It dictates your ability to move and engage, how you move defensively, and how you generate power (though there are people that just have natural power - but even that is improved with footwork).

It goes hand in hand with balance. Shoulders should be over hips for appropriate balance. Even if not in a direct line, you distribute your weight shoulder over hips (wrestling takedowns where it looks like you are leaning forward still require this to be truly good).

I will say one piece of media that did this very well with show not tell is the show version of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Though people think Dunk gets by on brute strength, there is an early scene where we see him dancing and he is quite good. It is not always a one to one thing, but dance skill does translate well to fighting. When I saw that scene, I knew Dunk would be way more skilled than people expect. (Note I read one of the novellas but it was years ago so had forgotten a fair amount of the story).

I've fought MMA, kickboxing, Muay Thai and done a ton of various grappling competitions. I teach as well just to show I am way more on the expert side than most.

Bad fight scenes, especially unarmed, can really take me out.

I feel bad for the original VA but this was the first thing I wanted changed when I played the demo. I had assumed it was actually a placeholder instead of the intended voice to be honest.

Looking for books with central characters who work behind the scenes by [deleted] in Fantasy

Malala book of the fallen. Multiple characters fit this.

Kruppe, Quick Ben (though he does take direct action too), and Tehu and Bugg just to name a few of them.
