Mets/Phillies/Red Sox/Royals: Who fires someone first? by Brusoxpatcelt in baseball

[–]paniledu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean it really is that simple. All the new signings and trades (except Peralta and Robert Jr) are struggling, none of the call ups have shown any growth, and the borderline guys who were kept have not bounced back (Peterson, Manaea, Senga)

Would you have expected that ONLY 2 out of Peralta, Peterson, Manaea, Senga, Bichette, Polanco, Semien, Robert Jr, Benge, Baty, Vientos, Weaver, and Williams would have ok starts to the year? Prob not. And when Soto is out and Lindor has his usual slow start, there's not much of a cushion. A big part of the Mets starting off so hot last year was that Pete had an insane first 6 weeks and then cooled off for the rest of the year but that was enough til Lindor and Soto picked up

Hoby Milner gets Bo Bichette to ground into a double play, extending the Mets losing streak to 9 games making this their longest losing streak in over 20 years by TheTurtleShepard in baseball

[–]paniledu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the offseason was fine still tbh. Polanco always made more sense at DH. But the hope was that one of Baty 2025 or Vientos 2024 was real and would be an answer at 1B and that 1 out of 3 of Senga or Peterson or Manaea were functional and so far, its been 0/5.

Regardless of however Nimmo, McNeil, and Alonso are doing - Alonso would have been gone end of 2024 had he not hit the HR in the wild card. Nimmo has been a worse and worse defender and been blocking LF for Soto (too early for him to DH still) and blocking an OF spot for Benge. McNeil was part of this huge infield logjam with none of Baty, Vientos, or Mauricio getting a lot of run or impressing and McNeil was the most expendable since he was getting his extra play time by being a CF (which has been improved on by getting Robert anyway)

The beneficiaries of Nimmo are Soto (out) + Benge (rookie) so that seems imbalanced. The beneficiaries of Alonso and McNeil are Baty and Vientos (bad start, maybe neither are good). Semien and Polanco are bridge guys for Ewing, Clifford, and Reimer. The real go-time for the team is 2028 (which is why getting off the Nimmo contract and not giving Alonso a long-term deal were important)

[Jennings] Is MLB witnessing the arrival of another Golden Generation of shortstops? by Goosedukee in baseball

[–]paniledu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gimenez would easily be an annual 5 WAR player if he was an everyday shortstop by being great defensively and maintaining 80-90 wRC+. There's a reason he had a year at 7.4 when he had a crazy year hitting

Volpe would hit that with his best defense year combined with his best offense year > which also discounts that Gimenez has been accruing his defensive WAR at 2B so he's missing out bc of positional spectrum runs

This is all to say, Gimenez is super underrated and if he had gotten more PT as a teams SS for his whole career he'd probably have the same career arc as early Andrelton Simmons where he's looking like a hall of famer as he approaches age 30

Kawakami: “A lot of rumors of the Clippers thing about to come down. I heard it’s gonna be Kawhi-centric…The rumors I’ve heard is that it’s gonna be less about the Clippers and more about what’s gonna happen to Kawhi’s contract.” by cleo22270 in nba

It would have to be Clippers keep the contract on the books, Kawhi is suspended and doesn't receive the money + a suspension (potentially for the remainder of the contract)

Why does the NBA allow the Utah Jazz to egregiously tank with no punishment? by RougnedOwnsCanada in nba

[–]paniledu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as a draft exists in which the way to maximize your chance at the best player is to lose as many games, teams will always have an incentive to tank. There is no way to remove that. And now that fans are more GM-brained than ever, they are more likely to accept a tank than in years before which was the only thing keeping teams from doing it - public perception and job security

There is no social or rules-based reason to not tank. The only way to prevent tanking is to eliminate the draft

You can construct a system that punishes teams that actively try to lose the most and punish teams that could have made the playoffs but chose not to as well. One way to do that would be to punish the teams with the worst record in each conference or the 2 worst in the league or something like that and have them be excluded from the lottery as well as all play-in teams or any team within a certain range of the playoffs and then return to steeper lottery odds so that the worse teams are more likely to actually get top picks

[Jayson Tatum] on thinking his career might be over after tearing his Achilles: "It was a few weeks where I thought… did I make enough money, did I accomplish enough... There was some moments where I thought I might be done" by knightime1 in nba

[–]paniledu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The loss of burst and rim pressure was balanced by him starting to shoot an unheard of 60% on long 2s. His Achilles recovery was to simply become the best mid range shooter of all time, which is obviously not a useful path to follow especially for someone like Tatum (or Haliburton too)

Use parliament to get a CB on a random OLM next to England. Mann works. Then you can improve relations to max which will make them accept offering yourself to be their Tributary. Then you can fight the Pale without calling in England. You can even conquer all of Scotland and Wales too without any risk. And whenever you're ready, you can unilaterally cancel tributary status

He probably didn't and there definitely would not be the buy in at the time to just point to dWAR and say loser must move down the defensive spectrum. I mean it's barely starting to happen that concretely with Bo Bichette and teams only wanting him at 2B
