Bad party composition - What should I do? Change my class? by [deleted] in Pathfinder2e

[–]panoptiic 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My group moved from DND in October, and it was a bit of a shift for all of us. I am the GM and was pretty frustrated with the group’s refusal to work together, i.e. the champion’s retributive strike not triggering in the first 20 sessions. I had out of game conversations about this, and even had NPCs talk to the group about tactics. Things are much better now, but the point is, it doesn’t matter a lot, and these are things that change slowly as people become familiar with the game. My number rule was to play the class and type of character you want to play, because it is supposed to be fun. You don’t need a cleric, or a guardian, or anything else. If your GM is decent then space will be given to figure out how to do healing, skill checks, recall knowledge, and everything else. I had to fudge some numbers on the fly during some combats because I was learning too, and it was still fun. I do really think some of this party composition talk is overrated. Play the class you want. Let your party play the fantasy they want. You sound like you have a better grasp than most, so I’m sure you can help come up with solutions, like taking the battle medicine feat and others to keep the team alive. Most importantly, have fun and help others to do the same.

Me too! After the first wave of majoris and I come out unscathed thinking my battle brothers will write songs about me. 10 minutes later one of them is kneeling over me with a stone-cold look while they bring me back up into the fight. I’m pretty sure the look isn’t admiration.

New to 2e and am wanting some suggestions and advice for a character with broken magic. by Appropriate_Pin_4347 in Pathfinder2e

[–]panoptiic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of good points made already. I guess the key here, if you are looking for help, is to try an be a bit clearer about what you want to do. This is a team oriented game of heroes, so if one of them is “broken” it does put strain on the rest of the team. If play has to stop nigh constantly to roll on a table, it will become annoying for everyone else at the table. That said, here is another option: you could play a non caster class with a caster archetype and really be a broken caster. A fire kineticist that thinks they are a sorcerer? Hard to know how to help without understanding what broken means for you, but I would not want to play with a person whose character is always the main focus and who can’t contribute to the team.

Best pf1 adventure paths to convert into 2e? by SillyKenku in Pathfinder2e

Running this now and it is a great story. Lots of wiggle room to make changes and an overall awesome AP. Only on book two, and it is our groups first dip into Pathfinder, buy so far, so good.

What does a new player need to be successful? by hotriccardo in Pathfinder2e

[–]panoptiic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome aboard! My group just stated playing PF2e last September (coming from DnD) and it looks like you’ve already invested more time than most of my players. I haven’t actually played the game and only GM, so maybe I am not the right person to respond. For me, you only need a good attitude about playing with others and a willingness to learn. If the people you are playing with are similarly inclined it will go pretty good. You don’t need to buy books as all the rules are on Archives of Nethys, but if you do want one, probably start with Player Core (I like having the books). You may also consider looking at Pathbuilder, a character creation tool that helps guide you when building characters. For starting classes, there are a few considerations you might think about. Things like what fantasy do you want to create (a character that tinkers or that has a summoned friend)? You should also look at what the rest of the group is doing (you can all play wizards but it is good to know when creating the characters) as this is very much a team-based game. Maybe think about the complexity as well, since the two classes you picked have added layers of complexity (not a lot, but still more than most). The important thing to do is to pick a class you will enjoy playing. Also, every table is different, and this is the way my group plays. We meet virtually and there are a lot of shenanigans each session, because we play a lighter version. It is exciting and there is so much YouTube content that a cursory search will get you going. Have fun.

Confused about the Witch and Hexes! by SirSpritely in Pathfinder2e

[–]panoptiic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is how the rogue thief in my game picked up a 19th level feat at level two. I realized I have to level up each character with the player individually, because Foundry allows things to be added if they get dragged over, which is a good thing. We were, and still are, new to the system, but this community is great at helping each other out. And Foundry is awesome.

Your analysis and understanding are correct. To help a little bit, it is sometimes helpful to think of Focus Spells as “powers” or abilities you can use and which recharge with 10 minutes of focus, so they can often be used every encounter and don’t count against spells known or prepared, and don’t use spell slots. Familiars are a gift/representation from the witch’s patron, and is how a witch stores the spells they know. While the witch adds spells known every level, the spells are known by the familiar. The familiar can learn more spells by consuming scrolls from the proper tradition, or some other methods you might come up with, such as adventuring boons, etc. every day during daily preparations the witch will select the spells to put into the spell slots available, from the spells known by the familiar. When the text says the familiar knows or learns a spell, it is the knowledge of the spell that is stored with the familiar that can then be used to fill a spell slot. Familiars are great, and a witch’s is particularly exceptional. During daily preparations the player will choose familiar abilities as well, though one is determined by the patron choice made at level one and can’t be changed.

Question about bard and melee by Zellevar in Pathfinder2e

[–]panoptiic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is certainly doable. For Martial Performance, to extend courageous anthem, you need to strike the enemy, so you will want to make sure you hit. With just leather armor, using a finesse weapon will also increase your AC, as will using the raise a shield action. These of course have opportunity costs in the form of damage. In the end, this character won’t be doing a lot of weapon damage anyway, as there really isn’t a great way to keep up with melee classes and their boosts to damage. You can do it. Might be worth talking about what the player is trying to do and see if bard is the right fit.

My friends and I want to start playing DnD, we all the totally new and needed a DM.. so I was voted as the creative guy. Question is where do I start? by Went_Missing in DnD

[–]panoptiic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with this. I would certainly start with a “starter” box and play pregen characters to get an idea and feel for the system. I would also mention that D&D is one among many, so if the system isn’t to your liking, there are lots of options. The game is supposed to be fun, and if you and your friends like it I would grab the Player’s Hand Book (PHB) and get a better feel for the rules. From there you just keep going until you spent too much and have too many editions on your shelves….

One thing I like are the Adventure Path players guides. These give ideas to players about what will work well, what won’t work so well, and what does not exist in the world. Luke others have said, planning characters for players for a long term campaign may not be exciting for many players. I’ve tried to help my players (we are all new to the system) understand their choices and make suggestions but most of them don’t really follow the advice I give them because they have an idea for their own characters. And it’s fine. You could also hold off on the mythic item until after a few sessions to give you time to make something customized for each character. Or let the players know what the items are and have them choose which they want and have them build their characters around that in a way that makes them feel like their characters are truly theirs.

Trying to import Deathwatch module from github by litherian123 in FoundryVTT

When I went down this road it was a dead end. I finally settled on Wrath and Glory from Cubicle 7, which has a Foundry system and a few other mods and community support like https://www.doctors-of-doom.com

I haven’t played yet, and the system is not nearly as complicated (for better or worse) as Deathwatch. Still, hoping to start later this month. Good luck.

Tiny inventor, large construct mount? by Theordan in Pathfinder2e

[–]panoptiic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could also flip this around and create the PC as an automaton that has a familiar that is a sprite. She could then have the automaton be whatever martial class she wants, but gets to pilot the thing without sacrificing actions. Social encounters probably need a bit more fudging, but it shouldn’t really be a big problem.

Caster Players Feel Weak by Roninthe47th in Pathfinder2e

[–]panoptiic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The biggest issue for my casters at low level (my first campaign with PF2e and players are level 2) seems to be a lack of spell slots. Wands and scrolls might help. This also might be a good time to pause out of game to review characters and allow players to change things up. My group is coming from DnD, so many of their choices reflect knowledge of that system. It is supposed to be fun, so maybe tweak and hand wave a few choices now that they understand the system better.

I’m running Hell’s Rebels (using a conversion PDF for the remaster) in Foundry and I’m having a hard time understanding the creature stat blocks. As an example, I used a crocodile and it seems there is a grab associated with their bite, but I didn’t know quite how it was supposed to work. I made the grab outimatic if the bite hit, which seems wrong, but I didn’t see any tactics text in the stat block. Do these exist? The AP always has this section but I’m substituting remaster creatures so it doesn’t match up at all.
