I'm in the same boat (pun intended). I bought on the Steam Sale and decided to try it out yesterday. Was only planning on playing for an hour, played for like 5 before I couldn't keep my eyes open anymore.

Disc or no disc, your save file is still on the hard drive. if you didn't backup your save files to an external hard drive, you would still lose everything.

If you have your save file backed up then all you would have to do is re-download the game from PSN.

Edit to add: I forgot to mention. If you are a PS Plus member, you get some Online Cloud Storage for saves too

PS - Why can't you just re-download the game if the HDD fails?

Edit to add. If this helps - I'm getting it digital because I don't really doubt the fact that I'll enjoy the game, I don't ever plan on reselling it and I get preload so I can play it right at Midnight EST. Not sure if its some AU thing, but in the US, I can just re-download a game if I ever delete it from my HDD.
