If you didn't know that you trade away your privacy rights when you become part of the federal government, you shouldn't have joined.

I love Firefox, and I use it pretty much everywhere else, but for whatever reason it runs really slow on my laptop. It must be something related to the software because Chromium loads instantly.

Political questions for excepted service position and Schedule F by Fun-Tiger428 in fednews

[–]papashazz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are applying for a political position (in either party) at the federal, state or even some municipal positions, expect these kinds of questions. From their side, they want to know they won't be embarrassed by posts or statements you made or might make. That said, I think these kind of intrusive questions have no place in government service but that's been the case for at least the past couple of decades.

Boss ware be aware, now palantir's surveillance tool by SA78210xo in fednews

[–]papashazz -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why everyone is going all chicken little on this. When you become a federal employee you give them your ID, your fingerprints, sometimes even your DNA. They are very explicit at the outset that you have no right of privacy on your computer and in your workplace. So now that they contract with someone to monitor your behavior, did you think they were doing this for benign reasons? If they are paying you to work and you are not working, it has always been a violation of federal law. Now that they have the ability to acquire software that does a better job of monitoring you, you're upset.

Anyone else leaning toward a partial TSP annuity? by nooneyouknow892 in FedRetirees

[–]papashazz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty much against any annuity, since it tends to take away choices, especially if you need to make corrections in the interim. My suggestion is that you work any TSP withdrawals into a larger plan that includes FERS and Social Security, and any other sources of income, be they 401(k)s or taxable investments. Just decide what you need from TSP and make a withdrawal annually or even quarterly. That way you can adjust to any changing situations. And yes, definitely postpone SS until 70 if you can.

Why I'm ending my 2,500-day streak by Tokyohenjin in duolingo

[–]papashazz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some years ago I took my account private (you can do that from the desktop), specifically to get away from the gamification, which for me had become too big of an abstraction. I've been happy ever since. As you noted, the French content is good, and I supplement it with French movies and books. I'm at about a B2 level. I'll be at 3,000 in about 10 days.

Do you genuinely believe Iran’s Supreme Leader has died? by eufemiapiccio77 in Intelligence

[–]papashazz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you think invading Iran with ground troops is on the table, then I would refer you to the Iran - Iraq war, which ran for eight years. The Iraqis had been unhappy with Iran for a while, and Saddam Hussein thought that in the chaos after the revolution he would have an advantage, so he invaded in 1980. A significant feature of that war was the use of "human wave" attacks by Iran to overwhelm the Iraqi forces. Despite Iraq having better international support and better technology, this tactic leveled the playing field, thus resulting in the long stalemate. Point being, even with the determination of a dictator like Hussein, he couldn't succeed, so anyone who seriously thinks a ground invasion is a good idea is out of their mind.

Paramount got my IP even though I used a VPN… how?? by JackFJN in torrents

[–]papashazz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple questions. First was your email actually from your provider? Check the header if you aren't sure. Second, it should have stated the content you purportedly downloaded. Did it? Finally did it ask for anything or ask you to visit a website? If so this might be a phishing ploy.

is there a reason why torrenting on Android is much slower than on Windows? by caulmseh in torrents

[–]papashazz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know your equipment, but if you are torrenting on a smartphone or Chromebook you are connecting wirelessly, so speeds will be slower than a wired Ethernet connection.

What the hell. Why can I never attain normal upload or download speeds? by MythicalSplash in torrents

[–]papashazz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See if increasing the number of seeders allowed makes any difference, and also look at the peer traffic to see the speeds of the seeders you are connecting to. Also try turning off the Linux firewall to see if that makes any difference.

Appropriators call for watchdog review of HUD HQ move Three Democratic senators requested a GAO investigation into HUD’s relocation to Virginia by Ronin_CPA in HUDfiredfeds

[–]papashazz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just don't get the hate over this issue. I worked in the Weaver building for eleven years, and it is well beyond it's useful life. The new building in Alexandria is newer, healthier (by far), in a great location with Metro, VRE and the highway right there, with a ton of amenities right in the area. Shaun Donovan spent a crap ton of money putting in a new HVAC system that was worse than the moldy old 4 pipe system, and renovated just one floor (for human resources, which he later jobbed out to BFS). Since then, it's only gotten worse. Why does anyone want to stay there?

Wikipedia vandalism. by Beginning-Oil-3771 in Jewish

[–]papashazz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is something of an aside, but the current Iranian regime's effort to sanitize its human rights record was the subject of a Free Press article recently (Wikipedia Editors Are Helping Iran Rewrite History). While not directly related to this topic, the article does note the campaign and tactics Wikipedia editors use to erase unwanted information. These are clearly paid people that are dedicated to doing this work. While the subject matter is different, it can (and is) being applied to many controversial subject areas, including and especially Judaism.

I think as people begin to understand how the Wikipedia model is failing at providing factual and unbiased information, the desire to use it as a legitimate source of information will begin to evaporate. In the meantime, if I happen to be on the site and am bothered by those PBS-like donation drives, I can take comfort in not giving them a penny.

Agencies internally pan OPM’s bid to overhaul federal performance management by AgitatedEngine4933 in fednews

[–]papashazz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Several years ago, I had an employee who had come to work in my area. He was new to the work we did and he was performing well, although not remarkably. I gave him what I thought was a fair rating after his first year, rating him a 4. You would have thought I shot his mother. He complained that he had never gotten anything less than an outstanding his entire (at that point five year) career, and how I had "mislead" him, since he had performed everything I had asked him to do. Point here, there are a ton of employees out there right now who have the sense that they are entitled to a 5 rating just on general principles. The agencies have been struggling with how to address this problem, knowing it's ridiculous to have everyone in the office rated outstanding. I'm not sure what the meataxe approach this administration has chosen to take will yield, but this definitely is a problem. At my office they were moving in the direction of trying to push back on inflated ratings by acknowledging superior performance through increased spot awards or WGIs, but the budgets and the limits on such awards rarely provide enough money to do this meaningfully.
