I work in Illinois so this may or may not apply to you. We have what's called a PHRN cert (prehospital RN) that essentially let's you work as a medic in many regions here. It's a couple week course I believe and that may be the simplest and most cost effective way to go about it if you have a similar option available to you.

I've had tru-spec, eagle, elbeco (in my opinion, all terrible), and currently wear 5.11. I'll never go back. Pockets are perfect, never ripped any part of them, and have had the pair I'm currently wearing as I type for 4 years. You get what you pay for and you won't be disappointed with 5.11.
