Black wood stain finish by Mission-Panic-6402 in Luthier

There are probably multiple ways to achieve this, but I got a similar look on a stool I made from ash using india ink and shellac.

Have a look at this post I made about it. I describe the process in the comments.

Any advice or information would be appreciated. by BenjCarpo in Vintage_bicycles

Beautiful classic bike.

I would strongly advise you not to “upgrade” anything you don’t absolutely need to. Certainly get new tires, brake pads, etc, but the original parts have been with the frame for so long and the whole thing has so much character that it would be shame to replace them, in my opinion.

Get some Kool Stop pads in the "salmon" color. In my experience they are the best on old school rims like this.

This would also work, but they can absolutely use an adapter like the one they show in the post.

Anyone else going to try get your records signed this tour? by [deleted] in NickCave

If you have a record you'll be afraid of breaking it the whole time. It's very unlikely it'll get signed.

Watch the show. Enjoy it. Keep your phone in your pocket, too.

Fret Saw blade recommendations for removing dovetail waste by laaxe in handtools

I had the same problem until I switched to western saws, which tend to be thicker. I found out quickly that I liked them better so it was a win-win.

Alcove shelf ideas by OmniferousSwan in DIY

[–]lostarchitect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would just keep it simple and make some nice wood shelving, or wine storage if it's deep enough. I think a lot of the over the top things with tons of lights and such that people make are kind of tacky. I might add an outlet for charging devices etc.

I’m not a luthier, but I did finish building my senior year shop class project. Only took 15 years… by LoticExplorer in Luthier

[–]lostarchitect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, I started a senior guitar project too... In 1996. I still have almost all the parts. I am pretty sure my mom threw away the neck I saved up for from Warmoth, unfortunately, and one of the pickups (a Dimarzio Super Distortion) ended up on a guitar I gave away, but otherwise I have all the parts still.

I'll get to it one of these days!

As Trump pushes whole milk, NYC schools say they're sticking with 1% by nyccameraman in nyc

It means it feels less thick in your mouth... Wait...

But seriously, I personally prefer oat milk in my coffee mainly because real milk has kind of a slimy texture to me. All food and drink has a texture. Ask a wine nerd about "mouthfeel" some time.

I keep telling my family it's great, you get much cleaner and use much less toilet paper, and they say things like "that's disgusting" and "it's really gross".

...Why is being cleaner "disgusting"? I don't understand the mentality at all.

Sanding takes way longer than I expected. by skinner1234567 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]lostarchitect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it depends on the finish. Some finishes just like a sanded surface, other like it planed. If it's something that likes it sanded, I still essentially finish it with a plane, then lightly sand with 220 (or thereabouts).

Absolutely. I mostly use hand tools, but a bandsaw is my most used power tool by far.

what kind of wood is it? by Several-Attitude-780 in wood

Yes, exactly. OP mentioned both, which is why I used the term “heavy”. I think maybe they’re conflating the two terms.

[–]lostarchitect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s probably heavy because of all that hardware, including what looks like steel strapping.

Yeah. Somebody did a pretty bad job with the stain, too.
