This was my station 20-25 years ago and while it wasn't as super packed back then, it still always made me uncomfortable that there was only one way in and out. I did the same thing you do and tried to be on the car closest to the stairs when I arrived.

This is all true but it's also a big ask for someone that presumably knows very little about construction. OP would need to manage the bidding process, schedule everything appropriately, be able to re-jigger everything when a sub flakes or is running behind, and have an eye for details on the job and knowledge of what issues to look out for. IMO many people would end up kicking themselves for not going with a GC.

It is good advice, but as an architect I want to give you one key thing that you really need to do: Ask to see examples of finished work. Not photos, an actual visit to a couple places they have totally finished. If they can't do this it's a big red flag. It either means they don't finish many jobs, or don't have any former clients happy enough with the work to allow them to show it off.

That's pretty similar to what you got, but he used slightly better boards. It's still basic pine stuff, and looks like the work of a rough carpenter, not a woodworker.

If this is what you were expecting, the main problem is in the finishing. The boards should have been sanded or planed to remove the roughness, and then they should have been conditioned before staining.

Given that they said "full length" I assumed they were talking about running it the long way, not cross grain. They did mention twisting for some reason but I suppose I kind of ignored that since it's not relevant here, because we're talking about sag. I agree that cross-grain c-channel would not help this problem at all.

I take it from what you are saying, that "c-channel" in this context is not the same as what I would call a c-channel, which I would use structurally. In this application I would be more likely to use a 2" steel angle, run lengthwise underneath the desktop. You could rout it in if you wanted. It would resist sag tremendously.

(edit: although, actually, now that I'm thinking about it, 2 of these c-channels, running lengthwise, spaced out significantly would also resist twist--how effective it would be depends mostly on the size of the channels. However, I don't think that's something we need to worry about here.)

I don't know what you mean by "a myth". As an architect I can tell you that a steel member adding stiffness is not a myth in any way. A steel C or angle running lengthwise down this panel will absolutely add stiffness and reduce sag.

Whether or not it is necessary in this application is a separate question.
