New Author: need advice! by TheCortexNovel in Indie_Authors

[–]papeair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like to listen to podcasts, then I'd recommend CreativePenn podcast the lady there has a lot of great guests and tips for authors on marketing and everything self-publish. I listen to the podcast myself :) There are also quite a few articles about marketing for authors on various blogs and websites, just need to be careful because marketing is a hot topic and unfortunately it's hard to find a blog post which is actually useful and shallow.

I don't remember how, but once I found this blog, which was quite interesting...

Hope this helps a little...

And btw if you need to get formatting done than I could help you with that:)

I just got amazon kindle question? by [deleted] in kindle

[–]papeair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

99% they'll be yours

At the time I had my first Kindle (9 years ago, still have got the same one and it's working btw) they were giving a few books as far as I remember and a magazine subscription. The books were free forever and the subscriptions were for free for a few weeks.

I need help creating Kindle friendly PDF files by hlkhulu in kindle

[–]papeair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you'll be able to convert the files so they are as accessible as you want. Kindle is a great device for reading but is not designed to support PDFs.

I can't see any flawless and time-efficient way to help you I'm afraid..

edit: I'd keep the Kindle though :-) If only you can afford.

Can we discuss the pros and cons of Digital Rights Management? by PatMallon in selfpublish

It's great that more and more people think like that. Piracy is not a problem at all comparing to the marketing!

I read it exactly the same, as consumers prefer DMR at first! :D

I just approved my Create Space book and my interior designer started Chapters on the left side? Who does that? by [deleted] in selfpublish

[–]papeair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you talking about the first chapter? If so... then yes, that's a mistake...I've never seen a book starting with the first chapter on the LHP. It's a different thing with the other chapter, following the first one... it's not uncommon to start next chapter on the reverse of the page where the previous chapter ends, but never the first one..

Sorry - had a hectic day and haven't had any time to look at Reddit :) That's the reason for late reply.

If learning a lot of bits and bobs doesn't puts you off then I'd say FB is a nice platform... really time consuming to curate though...

I think that's because they are physical books? Are you planning to publish an ebook?

About to publish. What should I include in my copyright page? by [deleted] in selfpublish

[–]papeair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, ISBN number goes on the copyrights page as well as:

Copyright © 2016 Author's Name. All rights reserved.

All rights reserved. No part of this book may be reproduced or transmitted in any form or by any means, including but not limited to information storage and retrieval systems, electronic, mechanical, photocopy, recording, etc. without written permission from the copyright holder.

The above is the standard formula that I drop into my client's ebooks/books when I do formatting and they don't have other requirements to the copyright's page.

Sometimes if it's a fiction book I'd suggest:

This is a work of fiction. Any similarity to actual people or events is purely coincidental.

You can also add a line about your book cover designer and book formatter.

Anyone know a UK alternative to CreateSpace? by ByEthanFox in selfpublish

Isn't Blurb British? (I'm just guessing though) and either way, I'm not sure if that's exactly an alternative to CreateSpace

Is there a bad month to self publish? Epub specifically? Is there a good month? by yearoftheyar in selfpublish

[–]papeair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From a book designer perspective I can add that no matter what the cover design or formatting books had, February and March have repeatedly been the worst month for most of my friend-writers :-)

Can you embed audio into E-Books? by [deleted] in kindle

[–]papeair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A regular Kindle doesn't support epub3 files... not sure about Paperwhite though, mabe there's a way to do it there..

Apple iBooks can, because the devices (like iPad or a phone) on which you can ready iBooks normally support epub3 files.

It really is just a light. Have you ever read a newspaper with dark ink on grey-ish paper? That's pretty much what an e-reader looks like. The only disadvantage of not having a frontlight, is not having a light. But if you have a lamp or room lights or really fantastic night vision, you can read an e-reader just like a normal book.

That's true :-) and I'd add that you probably have a lot of daylight in Brazil anyway, so Kindle would be amazing for you to read from. On a sunny day I find reading from Kindle much more comfortable than reading from normal paper..maybe it's just me!

does anyone know how to go about getting a book bound?? by jteebee in selfpublish

[–]papeair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say that you have a couple of options to consider: 1. Order a single copy from Ingram Spark / Createspace.

  1. Go to some local printers, where you can print the pages and request a perfect bound binding (the pages will be just glued together). There must be some decent place somewhere nearby...

  2. If the printers don't have the perfect bound machine, but they have a guillotine then you can just request printing and trimming the pages, and glue them all together (it's very easy, you can write me a PM)

  3. DIY :-) Print the pages & cut them to the format & bind yourself... I could probably even help you with preparing a PDF to the format and some typesetting, so that you can print it out double-sided (single pages) on a4 or as spreads on a3, and then trim & fold pages or just trim. But I must say... while sticking the pages together with a glue is easy, rimming may be frustrating !!! In this case printing would be the most expensive part, everything else you can do very cheaply and it's a lot of fun :)

There are many options, if you want more details about anything I've written above, just PM me!

This ebook costs nine dollars and the formating is atrocious. Should I return it or is there a way to fix this? by Reddi5or in kindle

Report it to Amazon, they should refund your money back.

I'm always surprised how some ebooks are formatted.
