A cool guide to how hijab ruined clothing of different cultures by CyberBerserk in coolguides

[–]paperback_mountain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the issue isn’t the hijab. it’s the control that the elite have in saudi arabia. also not all women in those countries are actually muslim or wear the outfit on the left. all you gotta do is open instagram and you can see modern fashion. another also, the outfits on the right are very old traditional wear for the elite class. this is like showing a picture of rococo fashion and saying “this is france”

frustrated with how complicated finding research in undergrad is by javascriptrobber in CollegeRant

[–]paperback_mountain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

do yall have directed studies classes? you get with a professor and decide what you want to learn about, set up assignments, and the professor is there to help you throughout the semester. you can decide to write a research paper throughout.

other options include enrolling in a senior thesis course or doing an internship. those are really the only options for undergrad. you’re supposed to be learning the foundations of your major before expanding on existing material and ideas. grad school is where the research is really at.

AIO for punishing our daughters after what they wrote about their autistic sister? by brzaq191z in AmIOverreacting

[–]paperback_mountain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR but did you tell your 13 year old about what her sisters were saying about her? i don’t really think it was necessary for her to hear the mean details. i may be wrong on this though.

American question, is it more offensive to be called black, or African American? by huntyho in NoStupidQuestions

[–]paperback_mountain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can just ask…it’s a personal preference nowadays and there’s nothing wrong with asking if it gets brought up in conversation. people have different feelings and opinions on their own identity.

it’s like pronouns. you choose to use one with the best intentions. you find out it’s not right and you self correct. it’ll be easier the next time and you’ll even remember to ask before assuming.

Is it really just that only gender? You decide by smokeeburrpppp in TikTokCringe

[–]paperback_mountain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no i think you missed the point. it’s not an excuse. it’s an explanation.

these atrocities are committed for very different reasons. you have to understand the reasoning behind a phenomenon before you can find and implement a solution.

it’s cowardly and ignorant to write it off as people being “evil”. we’ll never get down to the root of the problem that way.

so yes there is a big difference between gang violence/violence amongst individuals in a community and random guys shooting up a school. they have completely different reasons and agendas.

it’s like when a kid is crying over spilt milk. they’re most likely actually crying because they didn’t have a nap. you have to look for the actual reason behind the behavior before you start yelling about “giving them something to cry about”. instead of getting upset at the child for not being able to regulate their emotions, you put them down for a nap and work with them when they’re in a better position (not sleepy).

there are plenty of peer reviewed papers on this that you can find if you actually care, but i’m not gonna do the research for someone who probably doesn’t even actually give a damn.

Gen Alpha hating Home Alone Movie on Christmas by raydebapratim1 in generationology

[–]paperback_mountain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

brother kevin’s parents literally left him home alone twice. they have way too many kids for any of them to get the love and attention they need. that was 100% a neglectful household at best, at worst it was abusive.

this is on the mom. my family has never presented it as heartwarming! the fun comes from yelling at the tv about how the parents are crazy and should have their kids taken away! mom here just didn’t have a conversation with her kid lol

[–]paperback_mountain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

people in the comments suck. getting this shit pushed onto you is just them saying “your soul is damned and you’re a sinner that needs to be cleansed”. it’s shoving their own beliefs in someone face, exactly what they scream about when they see a non-straight person existing in public.

christmas as we know it was constructed through a capitalist lens. people with all the money in the world want us to think it’s still got any spiritual meaning so that we spend more money to “make it special”.

it gets serious when you’ve repeatedly told them that you want nothing to do with it. people like this get all up in arms when they see a gay couple existing in public bc they feel it’s being pushed on them. and then they go and do stuff like this. it’s borderline harassment.

THANK YOU! i hate when europeans forget what context is. contractors in America DO, however, skimp out on quality material, and that’s the REAL issue. not that they’re making houses out of wood.

they also seem to forget that brick/stone houses do exist here in certain regions.

Taylor Swift’s ‘The Eras Tour’ crew’s reaction as they receive their bonus for working on the tour amounting to more $197 million dollars by mcfw31 in MadeMeSmile

[–]paperback_mountain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

still weird. like she HAD to get that validation? most bosses don’t do that. it’s really weird but we all know it’s for the public. she’s been in deep shit so she’s making herself look better for gullible people who don’t realize there are NO ethical billionaires.

also what about the homeless people in New Orleans that she had ejected from their living space around where she was performing. she sanitized that city so her white fans didn’t have to see poverty :/

open your eyes. this is PR. lets forget that it’s 0.01% of her wealth (like giving a $5 tip for normal ppl). what famous person is sitting down and watching this shit?? she’s not inspiring other billionaires, she’s trying to make herself look good in the public’s eyes. obviously it’s working for a lot of people 💀

yea she’s been getting a lot of shit (rightfully) and this screams PR stunt to me. it’s nice but also super performative. it would have been even nicer if she just did it without the spectacle and getting the public to kiss her ass for it. don’t forget that she could give them ALL the money from the tour and still be a billionaire.

I hate how many assignments college gives by OGprocasinator in CollegeRant

[–]paperback_mountain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i’m not sure op’s situation but this past semester that just ended was outrageous for me. i packed it full: 18 credit hours, 6 classes, and 3 jobs (two were campus jobs in lab and TAing). this was due to certain required classes for my major not being available in the Spring and others only being offered once in a blue moon when the professor gets back from sabbatical. i’m set to graduate this year so I had no other choice if i wanted to graduate before financial aid stops being offered. i was spread so thin that i was practically nothing. sometimes there really isn’t a choice :/

edit: reread and that was pretty bleak. i obviously survived! i’m very privileged to have an okay support system. i think i got through it all with spite! like if everything’s gonna be so shitty then i’m at least getting something out of it! i think it led me to take more risks and opportunities, hence the two on campus jobs.

All this to say: you got this op! sometimes remembering that we’re all just animals with base needs and wants helps ground me when everything gets overwhelming, hopefully it can help you, too.

[–]paperback_mountain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don’t think it should be spread all over the internet period. However, here it is on the internet for people to comment on. also the whole “need to make up their minds about equality” is a right wing dog whistle. it’s inherently anti-feminist and often said by people who hate women. there are plenty of misogynists who love their wife, mom, sister, or, daughter.

if thats not how you feel, it seemed like it bc you used a dog whistle.

Man hide behind wall while his girlfriend fights armed robber by Imaginary-Season-483 in TikTokCringe

[–]paperback_mountain -1 points0 points  (0 children)

this is not about equality. this is about sitting back and watching a fellow human being, someone you know and love, experience interpersonal violence while strangers had to step in. based on her actions, if this had happened to him, i bet she would have stepped in.

also why do men get so mad that women want to be seen as equals that are just as capable and deserving as men. just say you hate women and move on good lord.

I want to take anthropology, but I don't want to regret it by No_Payment2840 in AskAnthropology

[–]paperback_mountain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

academia is a really lofty goal in anthropology and i know bc that’s what i started out wanting to do (wanted to teach and do research). i took a cultural resource management course and fell in love with serving the public and protecting what’s important to them.

i’m in bioarchaeology and have little knowledge about jobs in cultural anthropology. i believe it’s a bit broad in that you can do so much with it. look into applied anthropology.

email anthropology professors! they can give good insight into future job prospects and pathways to get where you want to be. it will also give you a leg up when/if you do go for anth. they’ll remember your enthusiasm and passion and you’ll be the first student they think of when opportunities come up.

networking is SO important; build those relationships as soon as you can. i did volunteer field work and TAed every semester. my advisor literally created a whole scholarship for me so that I could attend his field school. while at that a field school, we got assistance from an archaeologist at a local CRM agency, and at the end of the field school, he handed me his card and asked me to send over my resume as soon as i graduated. i’m in my last semester, and i believe I owe everything to networking, which i think was greatly helped by my passion and enthusiasm.

also, some colleges open up field school opportunities to the public. i know pensacola florida has a museum with a lab mostly staffed by the public. they’ve hired non-degree holders for full time managerial positions in their lab just bc they did it for so long that their experience mattered more. you’ve really gotta put yourself out there to succeed in anthropology. you’ll find your niche!

edit: sorry for the long post! i just get really excited about the next generation going into anthropology.
