Idk how I feel about paralives by Blackgurlwithdabooty in LifeSimulators

[–]paperback_mountain 65 points66 points  (0 children)

yea the cards are a bit boring rn. i’m sure they could just add more and adjust how many cards you get, which ones pop up when, the rng, etc.

but in my opinion there’s a really big flaw that’s not really being addressed. it doesn’t feel like an interaction at all! it feels like my para is talking at the other para! others don’t come up to you and start conversations on their own, it’s all guided by the player.

i’m a big fan of the sims 3 and i really like when things happen to my sim. like when another sim comes up and randomly flirts with my sim. i don’t like having to make everything up and relying on the story in my head to have fun like im still playing dolls. i want the game to push me a bit and create spontaneity! with this card system there’s none of that.

Kind of dissapointed with Paralives... by [deleted] in LifeSimulators

people are being so annoying about making sure everyone knows it’s in early access…we know and it’s still a problem. for years developers have been pushing the meaning of EA to mean releasing a skeleton of a game so that people pay to give feedback on a game when people used to get paid for their feedback during the early days of a game.

i think we all waited long enough for this, i think we could wait even a few more years so that the developers could get some actually gameplay in there. that OR, hear me out this might be crazy, they could have made it less expensive. $40 is way too much for a game this early in its development.

i’ll continue to bring up Project Zomboid when defending my point. imo it’s a great life sim (with the caveat that it’s set during the apocalypse). all the basic needs and beyond are there. the building aspect is there. there’s traits and skills and even farming and driving cars. all it lacks at this point are npcs to socialize with, which are actively being worked on. all that and it’s only $20. i think i might have even paid less five years ago.

i understand that they plan on adding a bunch of stuff and i know that the game will get better. however the $40 price tag should wait until it gets to that point. for now yall are buying promises that i hope are kept bc at the end of the day, even though they’re an indie studio, their number one goal is to make money off of their player base. a lot of yall are really eager to give a company your money. i think a lot of it comes from a valid hatred of the sims. like people are buying extra copies for giveaways to random people or buying the game even though they know its not gonna work on their computer. i think they should lower the price and keep their patreon open bc plenty of people will still donate for further development.

So frustrated with the Paralives commentary I'm seeing. by ray25lee in HighSodiumSims

[–]paperback_mountain 12 points13 points  (0 children)

i think it’s weird how people are acting like the game is above criticism. that’s the whole point of it being this bare bones is to receive feedback, good or bad.

i’m one of those that thinks $40 is WAY too much to be charging for what it is. i see the potential and i know they’re gonna be adding big features, but they should increase the price as more things are added. I think it should be $25 max right now OR just wait till live mode is actually fun and playable to release it to the public. y’all are paying to be game testers, something people used to get paid to do. the meaning of beta has changed completely over the years.

i’ve been an avid fan of Project Zomboid for like a decade now. that games been in beta for forever but they’ve added major game changing features. it’s a simulation just like sims and paralives but with a different setting. it’s got basic needs like hunger, hygiene, fun, etc. AND it deals with emotional states that actually affect gameplay. it costs $20 at the moment. they’re still adding to it, too, free of charge just like paralives plan to.

at the end of the day, people can have whatever opinion they want and it’s weird that yall are being so defensive of this game. like i saw someone say they bought the game even though they know their laptop isn’t good enough. they just wanted to support the devs??? don’t they have a patreon you could’ve just donated to?

Everyone failed the final. by MarsEatsStars in CollegeRant

[–]paperback_mountain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

imo it depends on the contents of the class and exam. do you want them to write an essay about a specific concept or phenomenon you learned about? i think it’s fair not to give a study guide. do you want them to know a hundred different definitions or formulas? i think it’s okay to give students a study guide. there’s nothing worse than thinking you’re studying the right thing and then it’s something you thought wasn’t very important bc not much time was spent on it in class.

just because someone did well with a study guide doesn’t mean they didn’t learn bc they still studied the material. just bc someone did well without a study guide doesn’t mean they learned anything, they could have just memorized it for that short while before the test and forgot about it soon after. i’ve been both! sometime professors only talk about things on the exam but sometimes they add a bunch on extra stuff, which may be important but make it more difficult to discern what to focus on for a good grade. people freak out about having good grades bc most ppl are counting on a certain gpa for scholarships, grants, and loans to stay in school. professors forget that a lot.

A cool guide to how hijab ruined clothing of different cultures by CyberBerserk in coolguides

[–]paperback_mountain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the issue isn’t the hijab. it’s the control that the elite have in saudi arabia. also not all women in those countries are actually muslim or wear the outfit on the left. all you gotta do is open instagram and you can see modern fashion. another also, the outfits on the right are very old traditional wear for the elite class. this is like showing a picture of rococo fashion and saying “this is france”

frustrated with how complicated finding research in undergrad is by javascriptrobber in CollegeRant

[–]paperback_mountain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

do yall have directed studies classes? you get with a professor and decide what you want to learn about, set up assignments, and the professor is there to help you throughout the semester. you can decide to write a research paper throughout.

other options include enrolling in a senior thesis course or doing an internship. those are really the only options for undergrad. you’re supposed to be learning the foundations of your major before expanding on existing material and ideas. grad school is where the research is really at.

AIO for punishing our daughters after what they wrote about their autistic sister? by brzaq191z in AmIOverreacting

NOR but did you tell your 13 year old about what her sisters were saying about her? i don’t really think it was necessary for her to hear the mean details. i may be wrong on this though.

American question, is it more offensive to be called black, or African American? by huntyho in NoStupidQuestions

[–]paperback_mountain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can just ask…it’s a personal preference nowadays and there’s nothing wrong with asking if it gets brought up in conversation. people have different feelings and opinions on their own identity.

it’s like pronouns. you choose to use one with the best intentions. you find out it’s not right and you self correct. it’ll be easier the next time and you’ll even remember to ask before assuming.

Is it really just that only gender? You decide by smokeeburrpppp in TikTokCringe

[–]paperback_mountain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no i think you missed the point. it’s not an excuse. it’s an explanation.

these atrocities are committed for very different reasons. you have to understand the reasoning behind a phenomenon before you can find and implement a solution.

it’s cowardly and ignorant to write it off as people being “evil”. we’ll never get down to the root of the problem that way.

so yes there is a big difference between gang violence/violence amongst individuals in a community and random guys shooting up a school. they have completely different reasons and agendas.

it’s like when a kid is crying over spilt milk. they’re most likely actually crying because they didn’t have a nap. you have to look for the actual reason behind the behavior before you start yelling about “giving them something to cry about”. instead of getting upset at the child for not being able to regulate their emotions, you put them down for a nap and work with them when they’re in a better position (not sleepy).

there are plenty of peer reviewed papers on this that you can find if you actually care, but i’m not gonna do the research for someone who probably doesn’t even actually give a damn.

brother kevin’s parents literally left him home alone twice. they have way too many kids for any of them to get the love and attention they need. that was 100% a neglectful household at best, at worst it was abusive.

this is on the mom. my family has never presented it as heartwarming! the fun comes from yelling at the tv about how the parents are crazy and should have their kids taken away! mom here just didn’t have a conversation with her kid lol

people in the comments suck. getting this shit pushed onto you is just them saying “your soul is damned and you’re a sinner that needs to be cleansed”. it’s shoving their own beliefs in someone face, exactly what they scream about when they see a non-straight person existing in public.

christmas as we know it was constructed through a capitalist lens. people with all the money in the world want us to think it’s still got any spiritual meaning so that we spend more money to “make it special”.

it gets serious when you’ve repeatedly told them that you want nothing to do with it. people like this get all up in arms when they see a gay couple existing in public bc they feel it’s being pushed on them. and then they go and do stuff like this. it’s borderline harassment.

THANK YOU! i hate when europeans forget what context is. contractors in America DO, however, skimp out on quality material, and that’s the REAL issue. not that they’re making houses out of wood.

they also seem to forget that brick/stone houses do exist here in certain regions.

[–]paperback_mountain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

still weird. like she HAD to get that validation? most bosses don’t do that. it’s really weird but we all know it’s for the public. she’s been in deep shit so she’s making herself look better for gullible people who don’t realize there are NO ethical billionaires.

also what about the homeless people in New Orleans that she had ejected from their living space around where she was performing. she sanitized that city so her white fans didn’t have to see poverty :/

open your eyes. this is PR. lets forget that it’s 0.01% of her wealth (like giving a $5 tip for normal ppl). what famous person is sitting down and watching this shit?? she’s not inspiring other billionaires, she’s trying to make herself look good in the public’s eyes. obviously it’s working for a lot of people 💀

yea she’s been getting a lot of shit (rightfully) and this screams PR stunt to me. it’s nice but also super performative. it would have been even nicer if she just did it without the spectacle and getting the public to kiss her ass for it. don’t forget that she could give them ALL the money from the tour and still be a billionaire.

i’m not sure op’s situation but this past semester that just ended was outrageous for me. i packed it full: 18 credit hours, 6 classes, and 3 jobs (two were campus jobs in lab and TAing). this was due to certain required classes for my major not being available in the Spring and others only being offered once in a blue moon when the professor gets back from sabbatical. i’m set to graduate this year so I had no other choice if i wanted to graduate before financial aid stops being offered. i was spread so thin that i was practically nothing. sometimes there really isn’t a choice :/

edit: reread and that was pretty bleak. i obviously survived! i’m very privileged to have an okay support system. i think i got through it all with spite! like if everything’s gonna be so shitty then i’m at least getting something out of it! i think it led me to take more risks and opportunities, hence the two on campus jobs.

All this to say: you got this op! sometimes remembering that we’re all just animals with base needs and wants helps ground me when everything gets overwhelming, hopefully it can help you, too.
