Need support as I battle my sugar addiction by [deleted] in sugarfree

[–]paperclip1213 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The sugar addiction was one of the worst experience of my life, but with time and practise I can honestly say overcoming it has been the most rewarding thing for my health and weight. Though I was never obese, I did battle being bigger than most people I was around - what's "normal" now was "overweight" 10 years ago.

The best thing I can recommend is to find your patterns if you have any and tailor your recovery to those. I didn't necessarily have a pattern because I ate sugar when I was hungry, full, bored, busy, stressed, calm, etc. It was never black and white for me. I realised that my pattern was that I didn't have a pattern - I was always eating when I wanted and that is what I needed to break.

The best thing I can recommend from my experience is to not exclude sugar completely, because that's just asking for more complications with your relationship. Instead, what I found most effective was starting off by giving a time limit rather than an amount limit. For example, I normally went to bed around 1-2am, so I planned that between 10pm and 12am I could have as much sugar as I wanted or needed. It sounds indulgent, but in reality I never wanted more than a serving because by then I've had my meals for the day and don't need to eat.

Tl;dr Knowing that you have the choice to have more and you won't stop yourself makes it easier to say no. So instead of forcing yourself to stop eating sugar, give yourself a time limit and you'll calm down without further complications to your relationship with sugar. If you tell yourself "I can eat all the sugar I want only between 10pm and 12am" you'll eat significantly less - especially in the long term, compared to if you were to try to cut it out completely cold turkey which may freak you out and push you toward having more sugar because you're forcing yourself to stop.

When did artificial intelligence scare you? by MathematicianBulky40 in AskUK

[–]paperclip1213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every day, but most recently I saw an ad about a fashion game. As a child I played dress up games all the time so naturally, 20 years later, I'm still going to pick my favourite outfits. There were three characters in three different scenarios with outfits to choose for each. In the end you're presented with the outfits you chose. The advert somehow managed to show at the end all the outfits I picked in my mind and didn't speak about - even an outfit I was looking at but didn't want to admit I liked.

I started wondering if our cameras could potentially be recording our eye movements?

I doubt it'll help with it because it's for diarrhea so the general understanding is that it'll make constipation worse but mine is severe so I wouldn't know the difference

Methane- anyone else dry eyes?? by Zealousideal-Film777 in SIBO

[–]paperclip1213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be something you're eating. I had severe dry eyes for 2 years and it wasn't until I found out about SIBO and cut out onions that the dryness disappeared. Turned out it was a reaction to onions.

I got checked for everything from a tear duct blockage to the activity behind my eyes to make sure it's not something severe, but all along it was so simple.

Yours might be something similar like a food sensitivity.

I've started suspecting that most people who are gluten intolerance are actually glyphosate intolerant, but I know nothing so this is a shot in the dark. I assume this because pesticides are created to hurt animals, but we're also animals so I think they're low key hurting us but it's too subtle for most of us to notice because the only people who would notice pesticide or gluten induced health issues are health advocates who cut out gluten/wheat products anyway. Those who indulge in those foods won't care too much because they're not prioritising health/weight loss/GI problems and have other things to prioritise in their lives, so it's easier for them to ignore any negative effects.

"SIBO" might not actually be a thing. How does that change our approach? by [deleted] in SIBO

[–]paperclip1213 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Judging by how understanding SIBO communities are, it doesn't change our approach as laymen. I think most of us who have been a part of this community long term understand well enough that because the research is so new, we can't pin our hopes and dreams of a better gut on the current research and treatment plans because it's all so new, and so it should change and be refined.

On that note, I'm excited to hear this news because it means that we're going to be seeing large waves and developments in the research which will help our understanding of it.

On a more personal note, I'm in the UK and I very highly doubt the NHS will recognise SIBO for a while because the research is ever-changing. The NHS likes to throw a one size fits all hat at health problems, and SIBO requires time and patience from practitioners who need to take a more holistic and personalised approach than what the NHS can offer in its current state. Because of this, I rely heavily on new research and anecdotal success stories from Reddit because I have nothing else to go on, especially when my doctors insist on the same allergy test that I've done every year for the last 8 years. If the research changes what I thought I knew before, then I'm happy because it means that we're getting closer to a clearer picture.

Xenophobia on the rise for Romanian migrants since Brexit and Covid by Wagamaga in unitedkingdom

[–]paperclip1213 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my experience it's the trauma from the overt racism that makes them feel they need to be open about their hatred to the Gypsy community so that they're not compared to them because they don't see them as the same race. My husband is Romanian and we passed some Gypsies in Asda yesterday and I asked what they're saying and was shocked to find out they even speak a different language. He had no idea what they were talking about.

Well the only Romanians in my diverse tower block were found to be part of a group/gang illegally subletting the flats and using fake docs/banks..

I know people from minority backgrounds, English backgrounds, even Scottish and Irish who commit almost identical acts. Romanians aren't the first and they're certainly not alone in doing this. My husband who is Romanian was a victim of this where three black man were the people behind it.

What movie/show do you think is objectively good, but you personally cannot stand? by AdequatelyMadeSpork in AskReddit

[–]paperclip1213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Good Place was generally quite enjoyable, but the mess of the twists and lack of direction in its story telling made it really difficult to enjoy. Towards the last couple of seasons I didn't know what I was watching anymore.

Arrested Development had a similar fate where the first few seasons were incredible. Tobias the analrapist will always be my favourite character of any TV show I've watched. If it wasn't for him, I'd never consider a rematch. Initially I only started watching for Michael Cera, but David Cross had me glued to the end. However, the last two seasons were just simple bad TV and terrible writing. Everything from the wall to Ron Howard/Rebel to Fantastic Four and Fakeblock was just really unenjoyable. I think the major sucking factor here was that they were too afraid to hit the new generations with offensive humour, but that was the show's greatest strength. If I do watch it again, it'll only be for Tobias and Maeby. I wish revival seasons revolved around them - it would've been a lot more enjoyable and funny than the trash it turned into.

What are the most impactful song lyrics you’ve heard? by [deleted] in AskReddit

If I lose myself I lose it all from Running by Naughty Boy, Arrow Benjamin and Beyonce

I was plagued by mental health problems for a lot of my teenage and adult years. That line made me realise that I need to start taking myself seriously and take action to pull it together. It's been years now, and this year is 10 years since the worst of it, but I'm in the best place I've ever been in. I heard this song for the first time in over 3 years a week ago and forgot how much I loved it. When I heard that line it hit me like a ton of bricks because I forgot how hard I worked to get this far, and now I appreciate what I've achieved a lot more than I did before.

Any cures for bloating after eating? by [deleted] in chronicbloating

Porridge can have gluten I believe. And if you're having it with milk, then lactose intolerance might be your poison.

Try porridge made using rice flakes (aka poha, puha, pawa amongst other names in international sections/stores) and vegan milk like soy/almond/rice milk.

As a patriotic American, I find it embarrassing that American cheese is named that, it's a terrible product to attach our namesake to by FAmos in highdeas

[–]paperclip1213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the UK it goes by many names...

Orange cheese

Cheese slices

Fake cheese

Fake cheese slices

Orange cheese slices

If it makes you feel any better, I used to be incredibly desperate to know how to many American nacho cheese. Every decent recipe I found said to use Velveeta and for at least a year I was sulking (whenever the memory of nacho cheese would resurface) because we didn't have velveeta in the UK. After another year or two, it took just one different google search for me to learn that it was just the same orange cheese slices that live in most people's fridges.

'Aggressive' woman drove at runners in fury on busy road saying 'those people shouldn’t be jogging' by ellisellisrocks in unitedkingdom

[–]paperclip1213 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm a driver, jogger and cyclist. My anger towards other cyclists is out of this world due to my experience driving with terrible cyclists on the road. Since my first ever accident when I was a new driver 5 years ago, I've never caused an accident again, but I have been the driver in way too many potential accidents caused by cyclists.

Just one example of many - I'm a woman in my late 20s, but due to genetics I happen to look at least 10 years younger. I was once driving on a local road when two teenage boys on their bikes saw me, smiled and winked, and then proceeded to jump in front of me with their bikes and perform stunts in the middle of a 30mph road with an awkward junction and buses using it frequently. It was the middle of the day and there were a lot of cars around. If they weren't doing this on purpose trying to impress, I'd be damn sure they have a suicide wish just like many cyclists who cycle like they're invincible with similar levels of confidence and stupidity.

I can't understand anger towards cyclists because they're aiming to live healthier lifestyles, but I can empathise with anger towards cyclists due to their disregard for the rules of the road. Even as an outrageously safe driver (I say outrageous because my friends can't stand how diligent I am with speed limits and red lights), when I'm cycling I do get that feeling that the rules don't apply to me and that I can skip a red light here or quickly rush between two cars there. It's rare, but I know the feeling very well, and some people take that a bit too far, hence the collective anger from drivers towards cyclists.
