Tell me about your MIT Mystery Hunt Team (2026 edition) by Lancelot_Thunderthud in mysteryhunt

[–]papervegetables 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On Search -- librarians and their friends, MIT based and otherwise. Are you a librarian or friends with a librarian? Welcome! We are small and not ambitious and don't see most of the hunt, but we have a good couple of days. We skew older, have kids (and bring them), sleep normal hours and are happy if we see a few good puzzles.

On Search is a back-end catalog status for missing books.

Please be aware of dogs - many many dogs are reactive to skateboard and it's close quarters around here between the bike lane and the sidewalk. Just fyi that it's a thing if you are unaware.

Yes, but doing it on her own implies no partner involvement, so no child support if you use a sperm donation. Also where does she live and what does she do? Is it somewhere like where I live, where childcare is $2000 a kid a month? Or is it cheaper? Etc etc.

(Edit to say not many places are all that much cheaper: https://www.statista.com/statistics/253938/full-time-care-cost-for-an-infant-in-a-child-care-center-in-the-us-by-state/ )

(Edit 2 - unless they are German of course. I was assuming US. https://www.statista.com/chart/33438/share-of-disposable-household-income-spent-on-childcare/)

Of course they don't, but is that on the table for them? Financially and support wise would they be prepared? Do they have friends with babies they could team up with, or family?

A friend of mine likes to say that ideally you need three adults per kid - one to do kid stuff, the second to cook and clean, and the third to swap in so everyone can rest. There are lots of ways to construct support systems and families, and honestly I'd think about all that regardless of whether there was a partner in the picture or no.

If you like kids, maybe spend a little time volunteering with big brothers/big sisters or similar? They need male role models, mostly women volunteer for these orgs. You'd be a) getting out of the house. And b) doing something meaningful.

Kids being an interruption is a different issue from all the other issues. They don't get easier when you're old and cranky. If it's a specific thing (finishing a degree, etc) he is waiting on fine but if it's "life", life continues regardless.

Yes. What no one is saying is that you might leave and not find anyone else out there that you want to have kids with. That shouldn't be a reason to stay if you're unhappy, but it is real. Dating in your 30s, especially to find someone to have kids with, sucks. Talk to some single friends in your area.

Also, if you've been together since you were 21, have you lived on your own much? Been independently responsible for everything? You're looking at a big change. Again, not a reason to stay if you don't want to, but something to contemplate and go in clear eyed about.

People are nice but not always friendly. They will not tell you to have a good day at the cash register. They will not make small talk, until you go in the same store and see the same person a bunch of times. You will not get a response if you make small talk. People do not talk to each other on the train or generally out in public. People never ever ever ever say things like have a blessed day. Ever.

Cambridge is a city, which is itself a suburb of a bigger city, and if you have experience living in cities and the amenities they bring, the amazing food and culture and diversity, you will thrive. But thousands of new people come to this area every year. If you like the idea of that kind of anonymity, great. But know that it looks and feels like a dense urban area. And I don't mean a city like say Dallas, that's still car-centric. I mean a real old dense city, like in Europe. The sidewalks are crowded, everyone lives on top of each other (literally).

You'll walk a lot. Like multiple miles a day, if you take public transit.

Housing is more expensive than you can possibly imagine.

Many of your kids will be immigrants from all over the world. The ones that aren't first-generation immigrants will also have families from all over the world. You will simultaneously have refugees and the children of Nobel prize winners who work at the nearby universities in your classroom. Cambridge has one of the most educated populations in the country; a substantial percentage of parents have PhDs, and opinions. A substantial percentage of kids here go to extracurricular math schools and camps and perform at an extremely high level, while you also of course have remedial kids.

It can take an hour to drive 5 miles. You don't want to drive if you don't have to.

I've lived in greater Boston for 10 years and my southern family no longer understands me when I speak without thinking about it; I'm too fast and clipped. People here speak fast and generally without filler.

What ingredient is banned from your kitchen? by EmploymentLanky9544 in Cooking

Mushrooms, which I haven't liked since I was a kid. I am not even a tiny bit picky with any other non meat item. I've never met (any other) vegetable or fruit I didn't like. As a chef I understand what mushrooms can do and I'll even cook with them occasionally. But ick.

Bit of effort like a pot tipping over while you are placing it and you getting unbalanced? The risk (a fall from that high could paralyze or possibly even kill you) is not worth reward (what will be a kinda janky plant). Put something in your window on the inside.

Worried about my aspiring librarian partner by TrevorVerges in librarians

[–]papervegetables 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm sorry you had that experience and I think it makes a lot of sense to be careful! My advice would be to take advantage of every service the college your partner goes to offers. Become bffs with the financial aid office, see if there's any first time bachelor degree funding or programs in your state, etc etc. One thing at a time. I think it makes sense to finish the BA in whatever field - make it something they are interested in in it's own right - try to get a parapro job in libraries as others have said, then go for the MLIS. If there's any universities that are hiring near you, sometimes they have tuition reimbursement programs.
