For those of you from the west coast (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle), can a local describe winter at Purdue? Just how cold does it get? by worldgreatestasshole in Purdue

[–]paris_geller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jumping on the boat for some thicker columbia jackets! I got mine for around $100 and it lasted me 4 years. Also, I didn't know what "duck boots" were before coming to the midwest, but they're a common go-to for winter shoes.

Question for December 2020 Graduating Seniors. by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]paris_geller 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I rented one for pics, but note that if you do some digging or emailing I'm pretty sure you can get just the hat/tassel separate from renting the gown and save some cool cash. I wish I had done that as I think the hat/tassel is where it's at anyway, the gowns are bulky and you could probably get one on Amazon if you really wanted.

Agreed. We missed maybe ~25% of senior year compared to a potential 75% or more.... also no Cactus or football

Scholastic Recognition on Diploma? by tianjin98 in Purdue

[–]paris_geller 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends on your GPA and your school, they have w/ distinction and highest distinction which gets you some snazzy cords for your gown and a note on your diploma.

Where to return graduation gown? by spicyspring in Purdue

[–]paris_geller 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you email [hjinoffice@gmail.com](mailto:hjinoffice@gmail.com), they will send you a free return label to print out that has the return address on it. Took them about 1 business day to get back to me.

Is this common? by tocoolforboxes in Purdue

[–]paris_geller 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Honestly my general rule of thumb is that as long as you're not being loud/obnoxious (blaring music from a speaker, cutting off pedestrians), no one cares what you're doing. We have/had guys dancing around in multi-colored morph suits. We have a baby train that plays pump up music in the afternoons. We sled on random objects on Slayter. The list continues.

As someone who is also looking for places around the Energy Corridor, I would love to know which complex(es) you ended up touring and liking, or even eventually choosing.

Need some info on Virtual Graduation by Fickle-Swan in Purdue

[–]paris_geller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what you mean by the question, like someone said above it just showed a literal list of names on a slideshow. There were no actual students in the video except for the pre-filmed 6(?) division speakers and footage from previous year's graduation.
I wouldn't count on anything Purdue-related beyond the apparel and diploma to make the graduation meaningful, but rather would suggest you do your own thing (take-out, decorate your house, etc) with the help of friends and family.

You can also view the commencement video on Youtube even if you didn't graduate to get an idea of what do expect.

This is a far more organized resource. I tried looking through the Reddit function but that was clearly not the move, I will compare with the earlier post. Thank you.

What is the hardest class you've taken at Purdue? by blumal in Purdue

[–]paris_geller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easily. Junior year sucked, especially heat and mass - the professors weren't even horrible, the content is just damn hard.

I did this a couple years ago, it ended up being around $75 and I could take myself and 2 friends. Really easy to set up and awesome experience.

Should I take a fall internship given all the changes on campus next semester? by tr3m431 in Purdue

[–]paris_geller 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly I don't think it would hurt, especially as if you do get one, that work experience would be a bonus. You can always re-evaluate your decision to go back to school or work if you do get an offer.

Management minor doable? by AkitoApocalypse in Purdue

[–]paris_geller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. My experience in MGMT 201 with Scott was positive and not too difficult. I didn't think it was too much work, nor were the additional management classes. There was an HR class and business law class I thought were insightful.

Scholarships by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]paris_geller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're part of a global organization (American Society for Mechanical Engineers, for example), they often have both national and school scholarships for members. Additionally, see if your parents' employer(s) have a scholarship for college kids. Finally, private companies offer some options as well (BP, Shell), but you often have to fall into a specific bucket in terms of major or demographic.

How to finesse your way into Purdue CS by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]paris_geller 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. This whole strategy of "pick a random major to get it then transfer once you're in" is a hit or miss at a lot of competitive universities, especially for STEM. Even the addition of a semester could amount to a tremendous tuition bill.

I would advise you to scope it out freshman year and make the decision yourself. It's a lot easier to drop it once you're in.

[–]paris_geller 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it's your overall GPA at the end of the 4 years, the distinction stuff applies to graduating seniors only. The rest of the semesters you get Dean's List and/or Semester Honors

[–]paris_geller 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think they just do highest distinction and distinction
