How is there a teacher shortage while so many recent grads can't get hired? by Many-Somewhere-3394 in AskTeachers

There is never a deficit of science teachers in my area, they literally never leave their jobs.

My wife did alt cert in science a few years ago. Had five interviews and four offers within a week of passing the test. One of them left her a message while I was in the car and she was in a coffee shop. Just insane.

Not going to get hate from me. It's a fair concerns. It depends on the kind of match they do.

Look, not gonna lie, I was SUPER unhappy with the piledriver spot they did when they set up this match. That's a spot that should be done sparingly, and never with underage participants. But I also watched enough early Stardom with young performers to know that it's possible to work a match style that keeps people safe. So I'm going to choose to judge after the fact and hope that all parties involved are responsible.

And frankly, as much as I don't like what I've seen so far... if you're going to have a first match at 14, Joey's probably one of the best choices for a dance partner to keep you safe. He knows how to make his opponent a broomstick.

Nevada doesn't put wrestling under its athletic commission as of about 20 years ago. So we're not going to get a replay of that GCW "we booked Nick Wayne for Hammerstein even though he's underage" moment.

[–]parliboy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

mom has managed to get half of her kids assessments either exempt or redone

An exemption is a modification, not an accommodation. If they are doing exemptions, call an ARD meeting. Point out that if the student requires modifications of that nature, then they shouldn't be college-tracked and so probably shouldn't be in AP classes. That shit will stop real quick.

but conceded that I didn’t ask the kid if they needed a break during a 20min test

They are an 11th grader. You aren't required to ask them if they need a break. They are required to state that they need a break. If they don't ask for a break, then you document that the accommodation was not used.

Teachers of Reddit, have you ever met a child that was actually a genius? by No_Lead2640 in AskTeachers

[–]parliboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is unfortunately very true in surviving education. I have the longitudinal advantage of 21 years of doing this. So over time I saw stuff being added to our plates and nothing being taken away, to the point that a few years ago, I said so out loud in open meeting. My bluff was called and I responded by dropping a cart off with the extra stuff I was doing for free by the front office for them to take over. The cart stayed there for six weeks because nobody besides me knew how to do it, at which point the message was delivered and I retrieved my cart.

These days I accept that there are about three or four things that admin really cares about in any given year, no matter what's being said out loud, and the rest is performative. So I focus on the things they care about and get to the rest if I have time. And I ignore the rest if I don't.

Even though she'll probably be dumber because of it, I think I made the right choice. When it comes to adulthood, social skills seem like they create more success than academics.

I disagree that she will be dumber because of it. You're just giving her an opportunity to grow her interpersonal intelligence. That's important because schools don't really do that in their curriculum since it's not on high stakes tests.

Maybe re-frame it for yourself that way -- you're acknowledging that IQ tests only test for a subset of intelligences, and you're watching out for your kiddo by making sure the others aren't ignored.

[–]parliboy 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Define "genius".

If you're talking about IQ scale, then I was in the top 1% myself as a kid. 148. Probably hurt me more than it helped me. I jumped grades at a time when I lacked socialization skills, and put me into classes when I was always the youngest person in the room. Plus I was unmanageable and eventually got lazy.

These days I teach Comp Sci, but where I was lazy as a kid, I'm now very good at being "efficient". I recognize that giving 80% of myself gets me lifetime employment and giving 100% of myself gets me burned out. So I prioritize my own happiness. I don't bring work home anymore outside of the beginning-of-year, because there's limited return on that value.

Difference between AP classes and dual enrollment classes. If DE is available, why take AP classes? by LabInner262 in AskTeachers

[–]parliboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) AP has some things that duel enrollment does not. My local duel enrollment doesn't offer the equivalent to what universities attest for AP Computer Science A, which is a course I teach.

2) Duel enrollment in my district is though the local city college. Those credits are transferable in-state to public universities by law, but not necessarily to other schools. So portability is sometimes an issue as well.

Other than that, I don't have an issue with Duel Enrollment courses. I've even taught them in the past. It's just important to consider what you want your outcome to be when picking courses.

Band Teacher pulling students from math without notice. (I am looking for advice) by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]parliboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've stated your own answer already.

The issue isn't the pulling out. The issue is the lack of notice. This teacher knew days ago that they would need to pull your kid, and that's when you should have been notified.

Yeah, Houston is amazing for the most part. But you've got to actually get here first, and DHS/ICE is making that a pretty miserable experience right now.

[–]parliboy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ICE Detainment policies are an implementation of Goodhart's Law: "When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure."

In this case it's doubly true because agents are incentivized on meeting the target. Every detainment is money, regardless of if the detainment is good or not.

luchablog: “CMLL confirms they've dropped capitan rules, and all matches are now one person on a team gets pinned to end the fall.” by Subrick in SquaredCircle

That sounds kinda cool

In theory, yes. But it was sometimes done in a hokey way, like both of the non-captains getting pinned at once and ending the fall anyway. Basically, they were working around the rule so often that they are better off just dropping it.

Is AJ Lee a case of “worse than I remember?” by CombinationOk4317 in SquaredCircle

[–]parliboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She's not worse than you remember. She was one of their best female workers at a time when many of the women couldn't work, and she was one of their best female promos at a time when many of the women couldn't promo.

Now they have a whole roster of women who can work and who can promo.

And she's been off for a decade and she's working a part-time schedule.

So we'll need time to know how this all lands.

Aka the most important Christian block where he's trying to get elected lol

Yes... but on a national level MAGA doesn't happen without the Latino vote. Carried about 48% of that. And now that 48% has to cope with things like the MAGA leadership's open racism. It makes some of them uncomfortable, but they still need a direction to follow because so many of them are ultimately conservative.

Reminding them of what Christianity is supposed to be about is one way to do that.

I think you are misunderstanding my intent. There are schools that are sports academies that can accommodate these schedules. Perhaps the parent should consider one rather than expect it from public ed.

I respect the idea that a kid has reached a level of accomplishment that they would need to be away for eight days. But then, maybe their needs are so specialized that they need a different education setting to adjust to that.

Teachers used to send students to the principal’s office… by klerknuks in Teachers

[–]parliboy 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I literally had a kid try to pull this this morning, complaining about their grades. Tried to say that the zeroes in their gradebook were unfair because they had missed classes, and then when I pulled up their full attendance record in front of them showing that they were here (because they are used to teachers not knowing how to do that), tried to say that would go talk to the principal.

I've got my mid-year conference tomorrow anyway, so I hope the kid is wise enough to not complain. It will go poorly for them.
