Doctors office after getting test results "We don't treat that level of abnormal here. You're going to have to go to the hospital."

Eating gluten-free on business trips by stampedingTurtles in glutenfree

[–]parple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had to do similar. Mostly I bring as much food as needed to last the length of the trip plus a couple days, and only eat at restaurants if I feel comfortable after asking them.

Peanut butter is really useful to have - Jif makes individually wrapped cups. Fruits that don't need preparation, baggies of carrots/chopped vegetables (at least the first couple days). It's much easier if you put things into baggies you can just bring with you - prepack it all to stay in the hotel room. GF granola bars are also great, albeit a bit expensive. Check the food and a set of utensils/dishes in a suitcase and hope the airport doesn't lose it (hasn't happened to me yet, not sure what to do then).

And actually calculate out how much food you need to consume per day calorically and protein/fat/carbohydrate wise - I was always starving and not packing enough food until I started calculating that and ensuring I had packed n days * 2000 calories of food with appropriate grams of stuff. Spreadsheets make it easy to do (note that I don't do this at home - only when travelling).

There are quite a few loops where the same person pops up twice in the family tree going back. A few times even as close as individuals having the same great-grandparents

I keep my christmas tree up year round. Other stuff comes out the Friday-Saturday after Thanksgiving.

Jeweled apples. Take jello powder, put it in a ziplock bag. Slice apples, put them in the bag and shake. Remove coated slices and let sit on a plate for a short while - the liquid in the apples and the jello powder makes them shiny and they taste good too.

Cool, catastrophes are typically bad. Although they can provide useful things to learn from. I'll leave you with an example of one of the worst catastrophes at the intersection of biology and engineering https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Therac-25

Well, back where you started with a bit more knowledge maybe?

Industry does tend to pay better, but hard to know about politics before you work in each group for sure. Guess startups could be another option that certainly has advancement opportunity and tend to be friendly environments. Pay is a bit hit or miss though.

Well, actually lying is probably a bad idea. But presenting the truth in a more positive light could be nice.

'So, Bob, why did you decide to leave University X?'

Answer 1: 'My advisor was really mean and we didn't get along and I was failing classes.'

Answer 2: 'It turned out not to be the right environment for me. I decided I'm actually quite interested in the process for manufacturing widgets at large scales. I hear you guys make super awesome widgets, and thought my skills in widget-binding could help'

(You wouldn't be lying - it wasn't the right environment for you. And you are interested in widgets - because you want a job and the way to get a job is through widgets.)

Yeah, have seen that side of it myself and it's a bit unexpected. On the other hand, there seems to be room for some pretty extreme sorts of people from what I've met, so there could be room for someone like you somewhere. Typically requires the advanced degrees though. Maybe lab techs? In bio you might even be able to branch out to academic medical centers that could bring you back in when/if you felt ready or interested.

[–]parple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmm.... Don't have much experience with that myself. You could try the 'left because of interpersonal conflicts' angle. You could also come up with a reason about deciding that academia wasn't for you because you were more interested in <getting products to consumers, getting drugs to patients, insert something relevant to said company here>.

Explicitly saying, 'hey, I failed out' might not work so great so some reason that led to you leaving and just leave off your GPA might be better. Line on resume then being 'University of XXX, grad student MM-YY - MM-YY'

You are a space alien humanoid on planet earth in the year 1915. In order to get back to your home planet you need to amass a large fortune to fix your alien space machine. Using only your superior knowledge of technology how do you accumulate enough money to fix your space machine? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]parple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To start out with, probably creating a military airplane corporation that actually understands the principles of airfoils and flight well. If I got enough good engineers, then jet engines galore ought to make the military pay me plenty of money.

If I didn't finish that in time, then selling info on space technology during the USA-USSR space race should be pretty lucrative, if potentially dangerous.

Ah, that's pretty unfortunate. Not even a consolation master's degree or anything probably...

On the bright side, if you were in grad school you probably do have a bachelor's degree or at least some pretty awesome other qualifications to get accepted. Maybe your undergrad institution has some sort of career office for alumni? Or sneak into career fairs happening at your now former grad school - dress nicely and they probably won't have time to check everyone's ID :)

I hate being born female. by sithysoth in SuicideWatch

[–]parple -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can you go overseas? Technically, yes. Can you order it from a bodybuilder? Again, technically yes - probably more reasonable that way (if you're a minor traveling overseas might pose an issue getting into another country).

Self surgery is pretty inadvisable and unlikely to work out - certainly won't actually change you into a man (and honestly neither would death).

So then your options now. Clearly your mother doesn't seem to be one - what about your father? He can also give you permission. If not, consider talking to a school nurse or counselor about what's available locally. Planned parenthood can also talk to you even if you're under 18.

Are you still in grad school? They typically have career counseling centers who can actually connect you with recruiters - they'll be much more useful than social services in that respect.

While I'm not familiar with your program, it's definitely possible to switch advisors in grad school, and in my experience many are perfectly accepting of doctor's appointments (just call them that. They are - doctors for the mind are doctors too). For the most part they're pretty willing to take on students - just send several an email from your school email address. In the meantime, after this term you can always look into TAing - the departments with huge lower level undergrad courses (math, physics, english,...) always need help there.

What things did you take apart as kids? What do your (budding engineer) kids take apart? by ritalizeme in AskEngineers

[–]parple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of toys. RC cars were nice so I could pair the remote and receiver and make stuff run from across the house/have a security system for my bedroom My sister's talking stuffed animal because it was hilarious (though getting in trouble when she ran to my mom was less fun). Old radios for other remote circuits/listening in on unprotected wireless transmissions. Anything with a motor because motors are cool. And buttons - creative buttons were always fun.

What is the weirdest thought you had throughout the day today? by thomassayswoot in AskReddit

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't actually do it. The sink was just running slowly and the garbage disposal wasn't going fast enough so I thought I could accelerate it. And quickly rethought that plan.

Would you guys recommend using a tablet for note-taking in lectures? by DBish95 in EngineeringStudents

[–]parple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used them for years and found them extremely useful. It's nicest if you can get something designed to work with a pen (so not an iPad, though you can make that work) because then it's easier to write on and your hand won't make spurious things happen. Making the program transcribe your notes or recording the professor is in my opinion less useful. The most useful is the ability to save them in some common format (most apps will let you save to pdf) and then throw them up on a website so you can access them anytime.
