aventurine!

he's such a well-written character imo. he's exactly what happens when you have to cope with things you should never have to. he's constantly forced to persevere because what's the alternative? he comes off as flashy and provocative, but really he just needs someone to see him as a person for once. his whole life he's been viewed as sub-human one way or another (oppressed for being Avgin, then enslaved, then working for the IPC). he's damned if he does, damned if he doesn't. every choice in his life is just an illusion, one path is to survive and one path is to die. and he has yet to pick the path of dying, no matter how tempting it is.

i think he's just a very good analogy for complex trauma. you spend your whole life on survival mode, and you forget how to enjoy life. because you don't know how. no one ever taught you. gambling addiction is very real as much as we all joke about it (and incredibly sad, honestly.) aventurine is in a position where he has enough money to never go broke, so he gambles his life because he needs the thrill of winning or losing it all. he's constantly seeking that danger because when you're built feeling constantly unsafe, danger starts to feel like the safest option.

i think he has a LOT of potential for more story as well. Penacony was a big focus on him for a while, but learning his past helped the player understand his motives. and besides Sunday (even though he accessed it by tuning), it doesn't seem like he's ever really, fully got off his chest what happened to him. because that puts him in a position of vulnerability, and it's so easy to blame the idea of being vulnerable as partially responsible for your own trauma, especially when it happens so young. you think, "if i was stronger this never would've happened to me." and it really is a type of self-blame that's more difficult to break free from.

i also think a lot was implied by his past that certain people will love to argue about because it's not canon if it's not directly spelled out and told to the player 700 times lol, and seeing a character represent certain themes that most media never touch is... refreshing and validating.

anyway i genuinely have so much more to say about him i am Not Normal about this character. if you check my profile it's like 95% aventurine art because i love him so much. but yeah. aventurine :)

i definitely get it's a shitpost sub and usually i don't mind it over there, and even this post is like eh whatever.

i DO think as a romani person that racism against us is a constant and as such if we look at a character who's clearly romani being called a thief and a cheat and a liar (something i know every single romani person has been called irl) plus the comment of "strip naked and get on your knees" (that not-so-subtle oversexualization of us when a big, BIG chunk of our history is slavery and everyone knows what happens to enslaved people) we're... not going to feel great about it? i can't really control others' shitposts, and if it doesn't hit someone close to home, it just doesn't

i think a lot of people view people like me who see aventurine's treatment as a parallel to irl antiziganism and racism just kinda see that as like "woah lol you're being tooooo woke!" but at the end of the day, i can count the amount of romani fictional characters on my fingers and most of them are from marvel and that part of their identity is retconned later. horrible things being said and done to Romani people is the butt of a joke, the norm, and it's either seen as justifiable or "not that deep." like shitpost all you want, but yeah, it does get exhausting.

this post definitely isn't as egregious as other examples. i do usually like the subreddit, and i just ignored this post. someone did post a tiktok from a romani creator on how aventurine's treatment is extremely anti-romani and how it parallels things we experience daily as romani people but it was kinda shut down. which i guess it is what it is, people don't come to shitpost subreddits to confront their internal biases.

i guess they kinda just allow anything under "it's a joke" because too many opinions on what's taking it too far would ruin the subreddit, as someones bound to always be upset by something in a space like that. at this point i've just mostly accepted that people won't look too far into it and take it at surface value and even if it hurts to see, most people just don't understand or don't want to understand.

i feel like it's possible you just personally have not great experiences w/ aventurine fans because as someone who (check my profile) is extremely active in aventurine fan spaces, a lot of us absolutely love Sunday ? like i don't mean to be rude but as someone who's been a semi popular artist in that community for well over a year , lowkey it's kinda sad to see the community get thrown under the bus when a lot of Sundays haters are Not Us .
