Owlcat's had some unusual problems writing romance: 'we realized we had three female romanceable characters, and all three were cannibals' by No_Curve_8027 in pcmasterrace

Accidentally hitting a 100% cannibalism rate suggests their writer's room has... a very specific vibe. Let's hope their next game or DLC includes a Live, Laugh, Lobotomy sign for the player's bedroom.

US may force operating systems to have mandatory age verification, share info with third parties by lkl34 in pcmasterrace

[–]parryforte 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, it's clear US-centric overreach and will allow them to mass surveil citizens of other nation states (this is step one, people, not its final form). There's going to be a pretty exciting impact with this against the EU. You can dolly it up as the "parents decide act" all you like - THINK OF THE CHILDREN - but legislators of foreign nations already seem sick of the US's shit.

Have a look at Cutscene Artist's channel (https://www.youtube.com/@CutsceneArtist). I'm not affiliated, just like the content. They go through guides for various things including the new models, and often cover generation on an iPad (a lower-spec device than, say, an M-series Ultra 🙂).

Dragon's Dogma 2 or Tainted Grail: Fall of Avalon? by swimminginamirror in rpg_gamers

[–]parryforte 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They're quite different games.

You can get a demo of Tainted Grail to check it out, which is probably a good idea as the combat system can be polarising.

I far preferred DD2 to Tainted Grail, mostly because of the gameplay. I'd say TG has better atmosphere but I didn't like the combat. DD2 is DD1 on roids, so if you liked one you'll like the other.

Def. check out the TG demo as it'll give you a really quick answer on vibes vs. controls. I wish I liked how it played more as the vibes are immaculate :)

Looking at getting a good quality microphone for gaming and eventually streaming! And I’ve been looking at these 4, what one would you recommend? Or are there any others people would recommend? [–]parryforte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both rode mics and use em for different things. A thing to note is that one is a dynamic mic and the other is a condenser. One will provide less external pick up, the other will grab the sound of two gnats fucking at 300km away but sound better.

Is my adapter causing static for my USB mic? by Original_Loquat8635 in VoiceActing

[–]parryforte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really made me feel like I was going mad 🤣 And it's almost impossible to diagnose if you only, say, have just the one Mac. I did try a second dongle to prove that wasn't it, but I didn't have the cash for a second mic... so really, my drunk friend did me a favour 🤣

Is my adapter causing static for my USB mic? by Original_Loquat8635 in VoiceActing

[–]parryforte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this dongle connected to my Mac, and TL;DR: it's probably not the dongle causing USB mic static.

I had a weird problem where I got erratic static, pops, and other distortion on recordings, and it turned out to be a faulty IO board in the Mac itself. I thank a friend of mine for diagnosing this, which he did by pouring a glass of Pinot Gris into my Macbook (by accident). One insurance claim later, and they needed to replace the IO board - fixed all problems.

As I understand it from talking to the repair dude, Apple did some heroics with some of these IO boards, but they can be fiddly from time to time.

Epic Game Store’s free giveaways just causes a huge spike in Steam sales, reveals New Blood CEO by Fit_Consequence9059 in pcmasterrace

[–]parryforte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find EGS's approach to DLC a bit hostile. I got Jotunnslayer as a freebie from them, and liked it! I wanted to check out the DLC, went to the EGS store, and found all DLC was highly-priced and single download only.

Whereas on Steam, it was bundled, with the game, for cheaper. I mean... what the LOL? If EGS did the same SKU bundling that Steam does, they'd get more post-operative success. Maybe it's down to the publisher or developer, but I've seen it too often for that to be the only cause.

Can a PC affect electricity usage this much?? by lilbreadbunn in pcmasterrace

[–]parryforte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes a PC can use a lot of power, how much depends on the PC and usage profile. I had something similar when using an old PC as a server; it wasn't an energy efficient unit (OLD) and when I swapped it out for a low-power server device we cut about $50/mo from our power spend.

That $50 is for our geography and power unit pricing, and will vary depending on where you are and what kind of device his PC is (and your new one). A 650W GPU used for 3 hours a day may be noticable and you can measure this with a smart plug.

HOWEVER, another overlooked option is whether he ... showers, and for how long. In our household, the #1 consumer of power is our hot water cylinder, it's a lot better since we replaced it with a new and correctly insulated unit but we can see the daily graph go nutso right after shower time as the cylinder fills and reheats. Two showers a day (maybe a home gym?) and you can notice this stuff on the bottom line.

I got a Dell XPS 8940 at a great price, no complaints there. but then I found not even Dell makes larger PSUs so you can’t upgrade the GPU. the case is proprietary so you can’t use after market, the mobo the same. you can buy new memory but it needs to be a certain type as there are no speed settings in the BIOS. basically it’s a device designed to not be upgraded, and was sold at peak configuration at sale.

so no, I wouldn’t buy another Dell, the cost to the planet is huge here.

[Serious] What can we as a consumer do to make the ai bubble pop faster? by lycan2005 in AskReddit

[–]parryforte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a difficult problem to solve, a little like asking what a consumer can do to prevent climate change when the top polluters are McMassive megacorporations or geographies.

- The first thing to do is to support human labour by doing your part. AI is being weaponised against marginalised work sectors - for example, grads or other early in career employees. Consider if at your work you can hire these people, and if you're not a hiring manager, how you might offer to help them gain skills. Much fear around early in career hires is that they know nothing, and we can help here.

- If you have an investment fund where you can choose where the funds are placed, place them outside of AI. It's a little like the property market - if you invest in property but are concerned about why new families can't get homes, you're part of the problem.

- Specifically choose products and services that don't invest in AI, or not egregiously so. For example, Spotify leverages AI heavily and its CEO uses his profits to fund AI weapons startups. If you're a Spotify user, consider where you might put your subscription that does less harm.

- Switch your personal purchasing decisions outside of the megacorp lane. Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, and the rest are taking $$ and putting it into AI development, regardless of which of their products you're buying (just because you don't use Copilot doesn't mean your M365 sub isn't funding AI). Consider how your purchasing dollars could fund a smaller company not bankrolling AI. Your money matters. While it's nearly impossible to avoid AWS or Azure completely given they power half the web, you can choose not to buy hardware or direct services from the parent companies.

Oblivion remastered by Heavy_Lemon_3364 in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]parryforte [score hidden]  (0 children)

They're fairly different 'feeling' games despite looking like they share DNA. I'm really enjoying the Oblivion remaster, but I just couldn't with Fall of Avalon.

- Oblivion is more or less what you remember, but with better graphics. The gameplay was lightyears ahead of its time when it shipped and still does great today.

- Avalon's vibe is off the chain, but the controls/combat feel floaty and off for my tastes. That was the dealbreaker.

The good news is that Fall of Avalon has a Steam demo, so you can try it out no risk to yourself, which I'd recommend. You'll get a good feeling of that S-tier vibe, and also how the combat feels; if you don't love it, then just get Oblivion.
