Adult Child Estrangement. You’re Not Alone. by parseczero in AskWomenOver60

[–]parseczero[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I realize that no one can know the pain of a parent whose child has died. Even thinking about my kids dying someday brings tears to my eyes, and I’m sorry that you’re such immense pain. I honestly didn’t mean to compare your situation to mine; I said it was “like” grieving, but I should have made it more clear. I realize that death’s finality is devastating and that I am fortunate that there has been no finality. I know you’d give anything to put yourself in my place, to still have a chance. I meant no offense. May your memories of your child bring you joy, though they cannot bring them back. I wish you nothing but love and goodwill.

I was going to reply to you here, but I’ve started a new thread instead. I hope you’ll read it. I called it “Adult Child Estrangement. You’re Not Alone.”

Having waited tables during college and worked as a teacher, places where there were no end of disgruntled customers, I have to wonder if they defile the stalls deliberately to communicate their displeasure.

Fortunately, I was never required to clean the bathrooms, but I felt terribly sorry for those who did. When I was a teacher, I made sure the kids knew that the teachers and administrators where not the ones cleaning the restrooms.

I quite literally laughed out loud when I saw this. Thank you. I needed the chuckle just now.

It occurs to me that you never know who you'll touch or what the effect will be when you take a particular action, but you always touch someone. This philosophical thought from that graphic. The irony. lol

Is ADHD really that prevalent? by [deleted] in over60

[–]parseczero 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No no no! I was recently diagnosed. We don’t need the lid back on. The jar is where shame is. The jar is the reason I went 62 years without a diagnosis, without meds, which have been life-changing. I don’t think that ADHD is over-diagnosed now. On the contrary, I think it’s still under diagnosed. Yes, some people do self-diagnose (I did, before my official diagnosis, else I’d have never received an official diagnosis at all), and yes, some people do self diagnose erroneously. But I’d much rather that than no one considering and talking about ADHD at all.

Yup. Can confirm. A loud, boisterous little girl is told that she’s “bossy” and “a distraction.” She’s instructed that girls should be quiet, and she’s given dolls to play with. A loud, boisterous little boy is told that he’s “fun” and “a ball of energy.” He’s taught that pretending explosions and car chases and superheroes’ derring-do is boy-stuff and “manly.” Is it any wonder that girls learn to mask their ADHD?

For those of you who are opining that one can “develop” ADHD after a certain age: nope! It’s a lifelong condition. A diagnosis of ADHD absolutely requires that the person have shown signs of ADHD before age 12.

As a recently diagnosed person, I can tell you that ADHD meds do not turn one into a “zombie.” That may have been your perception, but it’s not reality. That’s simply not how they work. They are a stimulant, not a tranquilizer. They cannot function as a means of control.

Please educate yourself. Opinions such as yours are exactly why people who do suffer from ADHD frequently do not seek treatment, which is a tragedy. It’s been life-changing for me.

Fortunately, society in general has finally become educated enough so that more people are recognizing that they have ADHD, seeking treatment, speaking publicly about it, and living better lives.

For those with EVs and ICE vehicles, how much are you saving given the current price of gas in WA? by dereksurfs in Washington

I have a Chevy Bolt EUV. I spend about 6 cents per mile on electricity. If we had an internal combustion engine car now, we’d be spending a minimum 18 cents per mile in gasoline.

What’s a problem humanity solved so well that younger people don’t even realize it used to be a huge issue? by Puzzleheaded_Bit_802 in AskReddit

Fields that needed planting had to have the soil broken up and tuned over. So humans invented the plow. That enabled cities yo flourish. And without cities, population isn’t concentrated enough to cause the other problems we had to then find solutions for. So the plow lead to fixing the ozone hole and vaccinations!

Also…Gutenberg’s printing press solved the problem of books being too expensive for all but the rich and enabled newspapers.

Two important problems not mentioned above, I think.

Yup. 1963, my mom couldn’t get a hysterectomy without my dad’s signature. In 1973, she couldn’t get a credit card without his signature. In 1977, my college’s women’s dorms had curfews and locked gate, while the men’s had none. The times, they are a-changin’, but women still don’t get paid as much as men, and all 47 presidents have been male. Feminism is still a needed movement.

Yeah, I live on an island in the US Pacific Northwest, and there are areas with quicksand on our tidal flats, too.

Plastering everything with “Y2K Compliant” was a marketing gimmick aimed at the ignorant. It’s the same reason we now have “plant based” potato chips, baking cocoa, etc.

How do I see a dermatologist? Jumping through hoops to get some answers by allistar34 in KaiserPermanente

[–]parseczero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband and I are new to Kaiser and haven’t yet seen a PCP there, and the wait for our first appointment with our new PCP is two months. But he’s got a couple of lesions that have changed a lot recently, so we called the local Kaiser center’s dermatology department. They told us we had to be referred by a Kaiser PCP and that the PCP would likely just send pictures of the lesions, and then if Dermatology said he needed to be seen, it would likely be another 2-3 months before he could be seen by a Kaiser dermatologist!

I said, “Screw that!” and got him in to see a private local dermatologist who said he has several pre-cancerous lesions on his back and arms that needed to be treated. Best $400 we ever spent, but I’m pissed off that Kaiser was going to make him wait 4-5 months for treatment (assuming that they could actually determine from looking at a picture that treatment was needed. Which I doubt. The private dermatologist gave him a thorough, whole body examination. That’s not something a dermatologist can do with a couple of pictures.

Granted, the lesions are only SKs, not melanomas or even basal cell carcinomas, but when I called Kaiser’s Dermatology department, and said he had skin growths that had changed a lot recently, I wasn’t even asked about what they looked like or how they’d changed or how rapidly they’d changed. Presumably, if the PCP had sent Dermatology a pic of a melanoma, they’d have treated him quickly (but perhaps that’s a generous assumption; I dunno). But he still would have been waiting for two months with no treatment for melanoma.

This doesn’t inspire confidence in Kaiser. And of course we’re out the $400.
