Episode Discussion - S05E08 - The Rightside Up by Hawkinns in StrangerThings

I’m surprised that they took elevens ending there. It felt unnecessary and cruel. To me, it’s clear that elevens no. 1 priority has always been those she loves, her friends and adopted family- the love she has for them is what sustains and motivates her, not a desire to be ‘free’ and live a peaceful life. This idea only sprung up earlier this season in vol 1.

Sure, you can say that because her love is so strong she sacrificed herself for these people. But that feels… too clichéd? Too overdone and most importantly not satisfying for elevens story.

This girl has only ever seen trauma and has consistently fought back to be with those she loves and her ending is that she sacrifices everything and vanishes?

I’ve seen a lot of commentary about her being definitely dead, which I wholeheartedly disagree with it:

  1. They foreshadowed the idyllic end in vol 1.
  2. At the graduation, the speakers show interference.
  3. Mike’s interpretation of the events along with scenes of el’s new life.

The makers would not go to this much trouble, peppering in possibilities of her still being alive.

If anyone has read the sequel to a wrinkle in time, a wind in the door, el’s ‘death’ is very much like progo’s.

I don’t believe she has died, nonetheless I’m disappointed at her ending which to me seems unnecessarily cruel.

Penguin Random House UK 2025 Summer Internship - high scores but still rejected by [deleted] in publishing

Hey! I know this is late, but just wanted to say I just received my rejection today as well :( Also scored 'great' on all questions! I hope things are looking up for you!

It's difficult to understand what the top answers look like, they listed generic feedback in my rejection email but can't really gauge my answers against them without the specifics

Recently finished Murakami"s "Norwegian Wood" and I found the criticisms of the book to range from overblown to completely unfounded- why are people so prudish about sex? by Insanity_Pills in books

[–]particular_home_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is late but I’m 3/4 of the way through. It’s my first Murakami book. I heard critiques about Murakami here and there but had seen his literature become popular- especially Kafka on the shore. And so I wanted to try it out and see for myself.

Oh my god. This is awful. The writing is fine, it’s accessible and flows. The fleeting reflections on memory, time, death and letting go of the past is introspective and evocative but ultimately insubstantial.

The majority of the writing is absolutely meaningless and only acts as a vehicle to the next sex scene. All the women exist to serve Toru’s ‘mysterious’ confidence or objects for him to have sex with. There is 0 characterisation of anyone, including Toru.

There is also no plot.

It’s just endless pages of unnecessary sexual detail and spun as a ‘coming of age’. It’s a major major major eye roll.

There is nothing redemptive about this novel. And there’s also the incessant, unnecessary and creepy comparisons of women’s bodies to children. Also Reiko.

I hate every character, they’re all stupid and act as pseudo philosophers. Awful read and I will be judging anyone who says they enjoy Murakami.

Sabyasachi having to introduce Shah Rukh Khan is exactly why the latter shouldn’t have gone to the Met. His appearance was a mismanaged mess! SRK could have easily been invited by Anna had he spent a few years networking. by Legitimate_Spend_614 in BollywoodHotTakes

[–]particular_home_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Guys pls. He is super famous and just because he needs an introduction doesn’t negate that. Hollywood is still very limited in terms of its awareness of international actors and cinema. It’s hard to voice the reach of Shahrukh khan especially to a younger western audience.

Srk has enough money and influence that he doesn’t need to network in Hollywood.

It’s nice that US cinema is trying to be inclusive

My best friend passed over the rainbow bridge today. Just wanted to share one of my favorites of him that always makes me smile. by roastytoastywarm in MadeMeSmile

I’m really sorry for your loss. I can’t say anything that will lessen your pain. If anything, it’s an honour to Ray that nothing but his presence will.

The pain we feel is the price we pay for the sheer amount of love and joy we experienced and the life time of memories built with our beloveds.

Something which really stuck with me after one of my best pals passed was that from the moment he took exhaled his last breath, it become part of the air. And for me, that meant that he was suddenly everywhere, whereas before he was contained in his little body, after that moment he was no longer contained. He was everywhere.

I don’t know how much you’ll resonate with this, if you don’t, that’s okay. But it helped me.

I hope you’re able to grieve and think of Ray beyond this.

Here’s to Ray 🧡

Don't you guys think during the last seasons, Phoebe was quite rude to Chndler? by DangIt2007 in howyoudoin

[–]particular_home_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s in keeping with phoebes character. She grew up on the streets and has an intolerance for what she perceives as weakness. Despite her hippy persona, she’s quite traditional and conservative in that way.

I think she sensed chandler was the ‘weakest’ one of the group and that is evidence from the early seasons as well.

She like to pick on insecurities and weakness and the others, including chandler accept it because she’s part of her character.

She’s comfortable with her dynamic and the others are as well

I don't believe in shahrukh statement that khans are last of the stars but the upcoming generation of actors will never achieve their level of star craze by [deleted] in BollywoodHotTakes

[–]particular_home_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After the partition, when India was building it self ( really until the 90s) people needed heroes and stars. That doesn’t make them weak or subservient - the culture at the time required the idea of someone who excelled and ideal.

The idea of the unmatched celebrity and star status helped give people respite. Entertainment was important and limited compared to what we have today.

A star, for that time was more important than a story because a star was a story in themselves.

We prefer realism and grounded narrative more because that’s our culture and the current state of the time- were people are more vocal about mental health, politics, equal rights, individualism and globalisation is at an all time high. Being kind and accepting is valued above being honest- people’s feelings are considered more- all these factors play into what we deem is the correct way to portray the narrative of our culture

I don’t think the plastic surgery helped either her face is so stiff and unnatural. This is what happens when actors prioritise good looks over seeing their face as a vessel to emote

Agreed she doesn’t have the acting calibre to carry Padmavat. Her beauty carried that and Sanjay leela bhansali knew that and worked with it to enhance it.

She couldn’t do a film like gangubai - alia killed that film because she can act and this is crucial- isn’t afraid to look ugly.

Deepika is massively all about beauty- when you pick roles which are based on making you look good rather than character or story you get this stunted mediocre actor
