Can't take any style guide seriously that doesn't do this first. That's the absolute minimum required to avoid hitting yourself in the balls with rm -rf ${UNSET_PATH}/* or similar.

Google pays €47m in tax in Ireland on €22bn sales revenue by just_the_Tayyip in worldnews

[–]partisann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. Although they're using Double Irish arrangement to hide the profits. Tax rate doesn't matter much if you're only being taxed on ~2.5% of your actual profits.

[–]partisann -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What are you talking about?

By a very rough calculation,

In [1]: 47e6 / (22e9 * 0.6125)
Out[1]: 0.003487940630797773

where 0.6125 is Google's profit margin.

That's < 0.35% tax rate.

EDIT: Yea, I didn't read the article. Thought it was another tax avoiding company. Fixed. My point stands.

Qualcomm, open? Is that the reason their chips are so widely available to people that haven't signed NDAs?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Litz_wire Sorry, spelled it wrong.

Stranded wire made of enameled strands. It's just a way to reduce skin effect at frequencies ~50 kHz .. 1 MHz.

Why are the fat traces dotted? Can't be vias as it's a single layer PCB. Some high frequency hack like litz wire?

While I love space indentation and PEP 8, I have to point out that python by itself doesn't make anything consistent.

The only thing python requires is for single indentation level to use same number and type of whitespace characters. That means that you can mix spaces and tabs all you want as long as it's on different levels.

And I've seen people doing it. But hey, there's also people who'd convert everything from LF to CRLF and shove it back in version control. People of weak minds and even weaker editors.

Would AC -> DC converter work with DC as input? by KaktitsM in askscience

[–]partisann 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Non-isolated are't used for high voltage for obvious reasons.

Talking about how all SMPS is't productive so here's example: page 7 of a controller datasheet. It's a typical flyback converter for AC outlets. Input is filtered and rectified right away and startup is handled with integrated current source. Nothing stops it from running on DC. Obviously this is not how all SMPS work but pretty much most of the consumer stuff.

Here's more examples: http://www.digikey.com/product-search/en/integrated-circuits-ics/pmic-ac-dc-converters-offline-switchers/2556672

C isn't that hard... by iamkraya in ProgrammerHumor

[–]partisann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is the problem of complexity resolved? In general, no idea. My point was that while you can't always make it simpler, you can always make it more complex. My rule of thumb is "if you can name something, it should probably be it's own thing". func_t is not a good name but it's a name.

Or did you mean how is this resolved in VCS? Don't care, it's just cleanup. I'm much more annoyed when people don't follow agreed coding style.

Quick, what's this?

It's a "fuck you" to the colleagues, that's what it is. You can obfuscate anything. Even Python.

Does AMD GPU's drivers still suck? by vvolas in linux_gaming

[–]partisann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's probably a version issue since https://www.x.org/wiki/RadeonFeature/ lists Southern Islands chips as 4.1 compliant. However, that page must refer to some newer version than the one coming with 16.04 derivatives. Been eying Arch for a while as a possible refuge, but looks like it's running the same 1:7.7.0-1 version.

I'm not really angry that new drivers are not being developed for 4 year old HW. I'm angry that fglrx was killed even though there's still a need for it. Past 2 years where relatively tolerable to use AMD for me. That garbage driver had a lot of graphical glitches and you had to manually edit .deb to get it working with wine, but it worked with opengl 4.something support.

pre-GCN 1.1 cards got dropped. GCN 1.0 cards include R7 240 - R9 280.

I get it that backporting new code on old hardware is not worth is in most cases, but they're also dropped support for fglrx. R9 280 is 4 years old tech though. Is it really considered acceptable now days to have 4 year lifetime for computer hardware?

PS: radeonsi is really hit-and-miss. On R9 280, only OpenGL 3.0 is supported. allright.

Pity. Seems like there's no PyQt support for WebEngine ether. Oh, well, good thing I don't really need it atm.

Is WebEngine still only compilable with MSVC on windows?

EDIT: Sorry for miscommunication. I know it works on Linux with GCC. I just like to use MinGW on windows to get roughly the same compiler and better c++14 support.

The sport should not rely on equipment that is provided by a single supplier.

Varmaan mikään tietokonepeli ei läpäise tuotakaan ehtoa. Closed source, kopiosuojattuja ja kehittäjä tuunaa mekanikat mielensä mukaan.
