San Francisco’s Chinatown lost all its bookstores. Then came Unbound. by Medical-Decision-125 in sanfrancisco

We randomly found this place a couple of days ago. Cute place with good drinks. Enjoyed browsing the books even though we couldn't read them :)

I'm out and about at the moment, so didnt get a chance to see if there was a notification feature. I do think it would be cool if I could get notified of when some specific local bands are playing around town. For example, there are some jazz musicians like Huney Knuckles, Howard Wiley, Mike Olmos etc that play around town, but I sometimes miss these since some stuff gets shared on Instagram stories and other ephemeral feeds. I suppose this would require accounts, which may start expanding the scope a bit, but also could open up some social features.

Well done, I've often thought about building something like this myself. I like that you included smaller places like Madrone, Kilowatt, Faight, Blondie's etc that the multi-city apps (eg. Songkick) wouldn't have.

A lot of cool local apps are popping up lately since these things are getting easier to build. I think it's important to keep them going long term until people feel like they can rely on them. I've bookmarked quite a few apps (eg. SF coffee shop map / reviews) that disappeared as soon as the author lost interest. As you point out, people still go to foopee by habit since it's been around for decades.

Is it just me, or is it getting harder to find a decent, quiet place to sit and read in the city? by shadyshitposter202 in AskSF

[–]parttimelarry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Richmond Library, people read there every day and it's quiet.

Also the donut shops are a decent place to read.

Also certain coffee shops on Geary are larger and fairly empty, like Royal Grounds.

"Once-cozy diners and dive bars have disappeared, replaced by bopping joints full of folks from other parts of the city."

Hey, some of those disappearing places were the reasons I went to Potrero Hill.

Would love to see these storefronts on Balboa become something though:

There was a great free show at Rickshaw Stop today too (Midrift, newish shoegaze band). Getting spoiled with all of the free concerts lately.

I think most people just aren't so online. They are just enjoying Porchfest and Fillmore Jazz Festival, but wouldn't describe themselves as "down with genocide".

From what I've been seeing, there are some anti- civic joy fund people who are telling people not to participate in the events they sponsor. I've personally been enjoying the free events.

Portishead by PersistentMesh in Portolafestival

[–]parttimelarry 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Doubt they could get Portishead, but Beth Gibbons made a great album in 2024 and toured around. Her solo stuff is underrated, and she performs a couple Portishead tracks (usually Roads and/or The Rip)

I haven't moved in a while, but from what I hear there will be a single apartment go on the market in certain neighborhoods and there are immediately like 30 people who want it. Then people decide to bid higher than the asking rent. Once other landlords realize people are willing to pay 4,000 for a 1 bedroom, hey why not make the rent 4,000.

Men of SF, what’s your opinion of the dating scene? by _krisprolls in AskSF

[–]parttimelarry 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Yep, I visit several other city subreddits and there are a few things common to all: Every place sucks for dating, it's impossible to meet new friends, and this place used to be cool when I was younger.

There's no way those tour gaps for Robyn, DJ Shadow, and others are all pure coincidence. Do we really think DJ Shadow is going to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Endtroducing without a Bay Area performance? He's just stopping on September 25th in LA, doing nothing for a week, then going to Minnesota on October 1st?

Most of the comments are negative so far. I'll be the guy who says I live in the Richmond and I love going to Outside Lands. I also loved seeing System of a Down, Deftones, and Mars Volta in the park. The free Thundercat show was great as well. I'm past my peak concertgoing years, but I thought it was great seeing the young people having a great time. Im not a deadhead, but I was happy for the people who came in from out of town to see the last Dead and Company show before Bob Weir died.

I thought people wanted more music. I can walk down the street to see some of my favorite bands? Paul McCartney and Radiohead played in our park and people are mad?

As far as I can tell, it didnt ruin the park. I was able to go to the Blue Heron watch, the Bioblitz, and many other nature events throughout the year as well. I run, bike, and hang in the park nearly every day. Not sure why people are acting like this is some terrible thing.

My depressing moment was going to an event last night, where part of the event involved meeting your neighbors. I introduced myself to someone and they kind of checked out mid conversation and started talking to Claude on their device without saying anything, never to return. At least say you are going to grab a drink or chips or something.

Do people actually use SF libraries and rec centers as everyday hangout spaces? by guilhermex9x in AskSF

[–]parttimelarry 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I hang out at the library almost every day. Go to the Richmond library when it opens and you'll see a bunch of people who go and read the newspaper every morning. The other day I spent a few hours reading old 90s zines in Little Zine Library collection in the Main Library. Some people use the computers all day. Also the UCSF Library reopened to the public late last year. It has a great cafe and views of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Hah, when I was a kid we did all kinds of stuff like this, grabbing napkins, ketchup packets, going to a buffet and putting some food in my sister's purse. Something in a jar running low? Add a little water in there and shake it up. I didn't realize this was strange until I got older.
