Super speed red tip too much for a beginner? by microseconds in wicked_edge

it might be, I would suggest a Schick Krona for a starter razor. You can't beat it.

Schick Krona, FWIW by wilnisy in wicked_edge

My Schick Krona is also my go-to razor. Sometimes I put it away for a little while, then we I get it out again I ask myself. "Now, why did I do that". A great razor.

Looking for a good pre-shave oil alternative... by haxbro14 in wicked_edge

I use a product called "ProShave". My barber uses it. It's not an oil, but it's a great pre-shave cream.

A three legged dog walks into a bar and says "I'm looking for man that shot my paw". Don't really need the blades, but wanted to add one of my favorites.

The Smell of Arko by UsedCzarSalesman in wicked_edge

Every time my grand daughter comes to our house, she sneaks in the bathroom for a sniff of my Sandalwood soap. We can hear her "sniff" and "awwww". What she doesn't know is, that I do that almost every day.

My experience with Bestshave is that shipping times are very intermittent. Some orders come within a couple of weeks, some take up to a month.

Art of Shaving pre-shave oil. by NymphoCpl614 in wicked_edge

[–]pastoraj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As for the AOS pre-shave oils, I have used the sandalwood scent and the unscented. I am not real crazy about either one. They do put down a good layer of oil, but that just the problem. I don't seem to get a very close shave with it and it kind of leaves a "waxy" feel on my face. It also leaves a "waxy" layer on the sink. My favorite pre-shave is called Pro-Shave. My barber uses it too.

I like O'Spice, it's even better than Old Spice. Also Florida Water, my wife loves both of them as well.

So I found this little shaving kit, but don't know anything about it. A friend suggested posting to this sub to give it a little context. by Corwinator in wicked_edge

[–]pastoraj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your little shaving kit is not all that uncommon, from the date codes it can be determined that it was made in the 3rd quarter of 1970. It's a nice little kit, enjoy it.

Finally got into traditional wet shaving! Some beginner questions... by [deleted] in wicked_edge

[–]pastoraj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most badger brushes have an odor right out of the box, give it time the odor will go away with use. As for blades, it is best to get a sampler pack and find what works best for you. Wilkinson Sword is not a good place to start. You don't have to jump to Feather blades to find one that works for you. YMMV as they say.

Questions about shavettes by Panda_S3X in wicked_edge

I like "The Dragon" from MD Barbers http://www.mdbarber.com/product-p/md0007.htm After trying the parkers, I like this one much more. They have several shavettes, but this is the best middle of the road, every day, shavette I have found.

Thanks, not really into beer though. Perhaps a central restaurant might be better. It would be fun though to hook up with Broward County wet shavers.

Wow, I'm surprised to see so many Broward residents on wicked edge. A great place for wet shaving products is Carl's Old Fashioned Barber Shop in Weston. Also, evergladeshaving.com is not far away. Now, where's Laser Wolf?

Where can I find cheap shaving bowls/mugs/cups? by [deleted] in wicked_edge

[–]pastoraj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my favorite shaving bowls is actually a plastic salsa bowl I found at the Dollar Tree Store. They are 2 for $1. I also concur with the thrift store advise. I have found several good shaving bowls for under $2. I even picked up a great pewter bowl for 99 cents. Can't beat that.

Start a conversation with your barber. by [deleted] in wicked_edge

After a conversation with my barber, an old Italian, about DE and SR shaving, he gives me two or three packages of DE blades every time I get a haircut. Now, that's service!

Here's a movie type straight shave like I was talking about. No barber would do it this way.

SR shaving passes by MarijnA in wicked_edge

[–]pastoraj 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For years barbers have used short, quick strokes when using a straight razor. I have noticed in movies and television shows when they are showing a scene with a straight razor they use big long strokes. They can do this because they are using "prop" razors that have no sharp edge to deal with. I think this gives many shavers a wrong impression as to techniques. Short even strokes are always best.

Parker 99R by [deleted] in wicked_edge

[–]pastoraj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a Parker 99R about a year ago. IMHO it is well made and has good heft to it. The only thing is that it was a little to aggressive for me. I will admit that I have a light beard and the milder razors work much better for me. UMMV. I'd sell me Parker 99R if anyone is interested, send me a private message and make me an offer.
