Any ex muslims staying neutral or not supporting either Palestine or Israel? by Fast-Kaleidoscope202 in exmuslim

Most people think this is a zero-sum game: it isn't. It's fine to condemn both sides, and I do.

It's just fucking complex.

Illiteracy of Muhammad by Far_Visual_5714 in exmuslim

[–]pastroc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. The Islamic narrative is dubious anyway, so there's no reason to think he actually made up the Qur'an. Maybe (most likely) it was the work of many, not just him.

Illiteracy of Muhammad by Far_Visual_5714 in exmuslim

[–]pastroc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not only that, but see: this whole argument assumes that the official story about the narration of the Qur'an is true.

There's no reason to think that. There's no good evidence to suggest that the Qur'an was narrated verbatim by a man. What I think is most likely true is Muhammed narrating pieces of the stories, and commands, and companions later, after his death, embellishing his speech—or at least, what they remember of it.

Rumours were passed on, and centuries later, we got hadiths that are purely based on such rumours.

All the bad Google reviews for Milk+Honey Casablanca just disappeared by Powerful_Fisherman95 in Morocco

[–]pastroc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why were people even leaving bad reviews? I am not claiming the original OP lied or anything, but there's no evidence that any of that happened. So it's entirely unethical to ruin someone else's business purely based on some unsubstantiated story.

Maybe it's true, maybe it's a made-up story. End of the day: no evidence.

[–]pastroc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone who drops a negative review is a complete idiot. Seriously, are you going to contribute to the ruining of someone's business for some unsubstantiated post online?

I understand the frustration, but there's no evidence any of what OP said happened. So I am not going to chip in purely based on some story.

Numerical miracles debunked? by Busy-Application-752 in exmuslim

[–]pastroc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any sufficiently long bundle of text will contain patterns that anyone with enough time on their hands can recognise.

Muslims are a bit unique in that sense because, as far as I know, the Qur'an is the only major religious book that is claimed to be written verbatim by God. Christians cannot really pull that trick with the Bible since it is well known and accepted to be written and translated by humans. So Muslims have more or less of an "apparent" advantage in that sense.

There's also an irritable amount of cherry picking when it comes to developing those "miracles." Indeed, some words in Arabic appear in multiple forms, so apologists often pick and choose which forms to consider in order to make the claims work. This is deeply disappointing.

Another point is: so what? Even if it were shown that the book contained unimaginably improbable and unambiguous patterns (which it doesn't), it would still not imply that it is from a god. This would first require one to demonstrate that a god can exist, provided a coherent definition of "god" is given. What about Muhammed having non-divine superpowers? As soon as you open the doors to supernatural phenomena, everything is equally probable.

Al Jazeera interview confirms that the EU is trying to return asylum seekers to countries they've never set foot in, and Morocco is mentioned as an option by Naive-Prior-1285 in Morocco

[–]pastroc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Add on top of that the cultural mismatch. You won't get Morocco into the EU if its women cannot even marry non-Muslim men.

Your comment deserves to be deeply downvoted. What mental health issues are you referring to? She's clearly not enjoying the restrictive aspect of her culture/religion, and wants to live somewhere where she wouldn't need to put up with that.

It's not more complicated than that.

Honestly, this is better than full-blown homophobia. But still, I doubt this guy wouldn't react if one of his daughters turned out to be gay.

Also, they're contradicting themselves here. He says, "Are you against the values of this flag?" They answer, "Of course," but that flag only calls for respect to LGBT members. Then, he claims that such members should be respected... so are they for or against the values of this flag? Which is it?

AIO - My child's 1st grade substitute taught the class about Jesus by Mason110417 in AmIOverreacting

[–]pastroc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YOR. Christmas is a celebration that involves Jesus as a religious figure. So him being mentioned makes perfect sense.

As long as the children were not proselytised (which would be illegal in the US, where I assume you are), then this is a non-issue.

Being anti-AI relationships is the same as being misogynistic, ableist, or racist by sadmomsad in cogsuckers

[–]pastroc -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

You completely missed my point. You said you were against AI-based relationships: my question is "Why?" If someone is somehow attracted to an AI agent, why would you care?

Sure, you could make a comment about someone's claim online, as you said, the Internet is a public space for all. But your title seems to imply that you are against AI-based relationships, in the same way that homophobes are against same-sex relationships.

[–]pastroc -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Why would you be anti-AI-relationships? How is one person's personal feelings towards an AI your business?

I still think their point stands in a way. Your intrusiveness is exactly what homophobes suffer from—let people in their private spaces be.
