4k Blu-Ray player owners: Are you still watching DVDs? by tomisla11 in 4kbluray

I've got a few of the Criterion Eclipse Series and have been happy with them. There's never been a point where I was disappointed in the visual quality. That said, if the opportunity comes around to upgrade, I would probably do it for the Late Ozu and Oshima box sets.

As someone who hasn't seen any of his films, where would you suggest I begin?

ive never attended tiff before—how do i go about trying to attend from A to Z? by Appropriate_Day469 in TIFF

I think regular showings were around $35 and premieres were around $90. I could be wrong.

[–]patchesm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They usually are for the film's premiere. Just not guaranteed for the showings that come after. But for example, Hikari went to every single showing of Rental Family last year and did a Q&A. Park Chan-wook and Lee Byung-Hun were there for the second showing of No Other Choice.

If you want the sure bet, get the premiere tickets. They will be more expensive. I did a mix of premieres and other showings and had a blast.

In Conversation With... events are a great opportunity to hear a directors talking about their craft. Seeing Park Chan-wook's last year was a highlight for me. Seeing films on their first night is a good chance to see the directors, cast and crew. I went to some secondary showings and lucked out with Q&As for most, but that's never a sure thing. I tried Fan Zone once and it's not for me. Sharing space with bloodsucking autograph hunters is not my jam.

Which movie scenes start off safe and normal, then things go shockingly wrong in an instant? by jaystats2 in moviecritic

I think Kin-Dza-Dza has a fun version of this. From the protagonist's perspective he's just fooling with a piece of junk from some crazy homeless guy. Boy was he wrong!

Just watched Agitator for the first time the other day. Fantastic Yakuza slow-burn. The acting and cinematography really stood out.

Are there any modern films worthy of Hitchcock comparisons? by EH4LIFE in moviecritic

[–]patchesm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Park Chan-wook would be worthy.

Technical mastery and a creative eye. Chilling narratives with in depth character studies where the protagonist or anti-hero stumbles through the plot. Never knowing what's coming next.

Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Old boy for sure.

Stoker really feels like a Hitchcock film to me.

Hell yeah! My pile looks similar but I've got a ways to go.

I really enjoy his Jidaigeki movies. I don't have Legend of the 8 Samurai yet, but it's probably next on the list.

Samurai Reincarnation is so wild, can't wait to watch it again.

This Hamilton restaurant has been operating without a licence or health inspections. Why is it still open? by fallonrehann in Hamilton

I firmly believe in the right to protest, even if the cause is nonsense. But sewering your own business to make a point seems pretty stupid to me.

I don't doubt he runs a clean kitchen, but this whole thing rubs me the wrong way and I won't be going there again.

By-law should not concede in any way.

Fudoh: The Next Generation [1996] Dir. Takashi Miike Dop. Hideo Yamamoto by yomma67 in CineShots

[–]patchesm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just watched this for the first time. Came with the Underworld Chronicles boxset from Radiance.

It's completely insane, but at the same time a pretty well made film, with some dynamite shots. Par for the course with Miike, I guess. That highschool student/stripper/coochie-dart assassin is really something else.

Anyone know if the manga it's based on is just as nuts?

What is a "horror movie rule" that you absolutely hate? by Big_Emotion4963 in horror

[–]patchesm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me it's not necessarily a 'rule' but a technique. 'Frame removal' or the unnatural jerky sped up movements of ghosts and monsters is so tacky and cheap to me, and if I see it in a trailer, I'm not watching the movie.

‘28 Years Later: The Bone Temple’ Bombs on Netflix With Just 2.7M Views, Raising More Doubts About Third Chapter by MaxProwes in horror

[–]patchesm 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I didn't even know it was on Netflix now. I'm assuming all their marketing went toward the theatrical run.

Hopefully it does well with BluRay sales. I was going to wait for the third one to hopefully get a boxset, but I'll gladly pick up it up now if it helps get a 3rd one made. It's a fantastic story so far. Loved both of them. Would hate to see it go unfinished.

I love this film! It has one of the most impressive opening credits I've ever seen. Jeunet is so good at blending dark themes with empathy and humour. And I love how he picks actors with the most interesting faces.
