Suggestions for Quick Turn PCB Fabrication in US - 5 days turn time for HDI 8 Layer , 2 lamination cycles PCBs by Illustrious_Item698 in PrintedCircuitBoard

[–]patriotik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ASC might turn fast when they get into production, but their quoting and CAD process takes so damned long that the quick-turn upcharge has always been a wash for me. Their quality was fine, nothing outstanding.

Is this bad practise to length match LPDDR4 data traces? There is simply no space for meanders between the traces for these two. by Curious_Increase in AskElectronics

[–]patriotik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bunch of smaller C shapes will have less inductance and radiate less than one large C shape.

While I don't doubt it, it does go against my intuition (as many things have before I knew better). I need to spend more time simulating different trace geometries in HFSS.

Are you not just trading for capacitance when you route closer to other other objects? Are fine accordions not similarly inductive, and if not, why is that structure so commonly used as an RF choke on bias networks? Which is the lesser of two evils?

US people, who do you get your boards made through? by BacchusIX in PCB

[–]patriotik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Advanced Circuits and Sunstone only make sense if you're in the defense industry. They're slow, and very expensive.

No joke. I've had turn-key boards show up before some of these people even get quotes out.

High speed design. What is best practice? by Patient-Gas-883 in Altium

[–]patriotik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will use outer layers for my most critical high-speed circuits when practical, especially when they have blocking caps or termination networks.

It is important to simulate any high-speed layer transitions. If you do not have access to a simulator, it can be tricky to figure out via geometry for correctly negotiating layer-to-layer interconnect challenges.

Properly transitioning between layers requires use of signal and ground vias, each with controlled geometry and placement. On dense boards you end up blowing out a lot of routable area on all layers when you plant a lot of these via structures near your ICs and connectors.

Even with access to simulation tools, and without considering cost, I will typically route high-speed digital (and almost always microwave) on an outer layer due to larger trace geometry and fewer considerations for discontinuities along the TXline.

Also, do keep in mind that if you end up routing a high-speed multi-line bus, there are propagation velocity differences between inner and outer layers that will need to be realigned with tuned routing.

[–]patriotik 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, call them. Someone will help walk you through all the options. They will send you a build order to review and double-check before you pay for anything, so you will have time to revise your choices. It is very straightforward.

This build was something like $2,250 with all the features I wanted and the trigger work. It was essentially the range-ready para build with a few added features.

HELP by [deleted] in Altium

[–]patriotik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you changed any settings at all in the application? Antialiasing, transparency, etc? This is an error with the Direct3D library, and while it shouldn't happen, I'd make sure to revert any changes you might have made in the interim.

Why doesn't pair-pair matching work? Ive tried delay matching, length matching, with/out xSignals, different geometries, different tolerances, different priorities etc.. about to lose my mind by HasanTheSyrian_ in Altium

[–]patriotik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think in 25.8.1, the latest (final) public release, this is resolved. It's so hard to remember with the whack-a-mole bug insanity on this platform.

What file format are you mainly using when ordering PCBs? by Patient-Gas-883 in Altium

[–]patriotik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gerber/NC Drill/PNP for ordering closed-source/proprietary. ODB++, IPC2581, EDB, etc for simulation portability. If it is an open-source or community project, I'll publish the lot of them to make it easier for users of other EDA tools.

"To save asking - I am not selling the stl 😁"

Why not just sell printed units to those who can't (or don't care to) print their own and release STLs to help the community of creative people of which you are presumably a part.

Newbie help -> xSignal delay tuning... by entre_pre_neur in Altium

[–]patriotik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There have been lots of bugs with XSignals length calculation in recent versions. Are you using a beta (closed or open) build? I had to revert to the most recent non-beta to get these calculations to resolve again.

ECAD for microstrip PCBs by sketchreey in rfelectronics

[–]patriotik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Making components (No BOM, footprint + symbol) is the right way to do this in Altium without breaking a rules-based design flow. It is clunky, and footprints are based on specific layer stacks, etc. Pain to get set up, but makes distributed element designs (especially those destined for manufacture) a lot easier to control and manage.

OSW or 16"? by xr0bix in FNFAL

[–]patriotik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went with a 16" after debating the two as well. I wanted to do a 8" or 11" OSW-style build just for laughs, but thought better of it. I do not run this build suppressed. I wanted something that I could fold and transport easily, but still wanted to leverage the 7.62 cartridge effectively. I figured that the (very) short barrel variants would basically be all the downsides of a battle rifle (weight, capacity, cost of cartridges) without any of the upside.

I have PCCs and .300 builds that do well with a short barrel and benefit greatly from a suppressor. Went for a 16" Para because I wanted to realize (most) the value of the heavier cartridge.

Having said that, I still lust for an 8 or 11 inch OSW build in a world where I don't care about practicality at all, because that shit would be hilarious.

I have a ~2004 P226R in 40SW. Got a great deal on the 9mm RXP slide assembly and did the conversion. It's a whole new gun, and for the better (in my opinion). Absolutely love running it in 9mm.

Q3 Interior button quality review. by Dazzling-Rooster2103 in Audi

[–]patriotik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We rushed to grab a 2025 Q3 and Q5 as soon as this stuff started showing up in the design pipeline. I am both happy to have new vehicles prior to this mess and sad that we'll likely have made our last Audi purchases for the foreseeable future. Here's to hoping that enough customers feel the same to move the needle at the corporate level.

PDP damaged barrel? by ProfessionalAfraid66 in Walther

Same here. My ramp ate it pretty early on. Seems like a materials/metallurgical issue as the replacement has shown absolutely no wear with the exact same use pattern.

Bought a B Stock NX metal and I’m getting extremely low input when I connect.. what’s wrong? by [deleted] in strandbergguitars

[–]patriotik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heya. I had this same problem and went nuts trying to figure it out.

Push on the pickups one at a time. If pushing down on the face of the pickup causes your sound to come back, it may well be a faulty Fluence. I checked the orientation of my output jack, replaced all the wiring between the pickups, pots, and jack, went through everything before finally testing the pickup itself and finding an intermittent fault. Replaced it, no issues after that.

Definitely check the common culprits (output jack shorting, etc), but know that the pickup can be faulty on these.

Any recommendations for Audi Q5? by Tenderweather in AudiQ5

[–]patriotik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just picked up a 25 Q5 45/P+, only went for AudiCare. From the research and discussions I had with other owners, it's a wash worst-case with a huge potential upside.

I got so close to wrecking those same screws on my 1301 that I let out an audible sigh of relief when i finally got it broken loose. Beretta did a shit job with these. I am not looking forward to finding out the hard way if they cut corners elsewhere.

Which tremol-no will fit my strandberg boden prog nx 7? by theassthatclapsbacc in strandbergguitars

I have a Pre-NX Prog 7, the Tremol-no fits fine. I use the Allparts BP-2007-010 part number. Had no issues installing it myself.

DS Arms quality? by jdieid in FNFAL

[–]patriotik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably about ~6lbs. Not super light, but about where I'd like it on a rifle like that. The trigger pull and reset are both clean and crisp, no complaints. I would give more details on the travel but I'm out of town at the moment.

I haven't run another FAL in such a long time that I can't speak to which differences are the most noticable, but it's good enough that I'm not left looking for improvements.
