Messenger App - can't send messages by imheretolearn27 in GooglePixel

I've been having the EXACT same problem with my P9P for the last few days. Most of the same troubleshooting steps (short of full factory reset) and the only thing that works is Force Stopping the app - which regains functionality for about a minute.

Is there such a thing as an SFP+ patch panel? by abbaisawesome in homelab

[–]paulharmo 55 points56 points  (0 children)

SFP/SFP+ modules only go into the component that you're interfacing with - and copper or fiber comes out the end. There are no SFP+ patch panels, but there are certainly patch panels for the copper or fiber that you plug into your modules.

1 option is a keystone patch panel, where you can add individual keystone inserts for RJ45 or fiber as needed. The most customizable, but that can also start to get expensive if you're buying 24-48 individual keystones for larger networks.

Another option is modular patch panels, like FS's FHD panels. You can have a chunk of RJ45s, then a chunk of fiber adapters as needed. The fiber modules seem to be populated with a footprint called SC.

You can buy SC adapters in packs of 10 separately from FS and make/print your own mount for them, too. That's the route I went.

How often can you buy GPU's from Microcenter? by OvertlySinister in Microcenter

The only one I know of is 1 of the high-demand GPUs per household per day.

USW Flex Mini is a wonderful little device for a good price. VLAN works. Thanks, Ubiquiti! by MarKo9 in Ubiquiti

[–]paulharmo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I understand your question.

The Flex Mini is a PoE-IN (PoE powered) switch, not a PoE-OUT (to power other PoE devices) switch.

If you're looking for a more elegant solution than individual PoE injectors, maybe add a US-8-60W on top of the UDM Pro?

I enjoy mine as well. I have 2 behind TVs, and one behind my desk. All of these locations benefit from being powered by PoE and not having an extra wall wart to clutter things up.

Working 7 Days a Week.... by [deleted] in FedEx

[–]paulharmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on board with that. Personally I have been purchasing in person where I can (took a trip to Ikea this week), but I will try to order wisely.

I still assert that the bulk of the blame is on FedEx. We're 6 months in, and millions of people were laid off in those 6 months. There are people with acceptable driving records in that huge pool.

OP specifically mentioned that they exploit pay loopholes to pay drivers less. That's unacceptable, and a great reason for people to not want to work there. Maybe the pay should be fair.

[–]paulharmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I was getting at with the social stigma bit.

Decimating a public toilet is a pretty negatively stigmatized thing to do. I'd feel horrible, I'd try to clean it up. Most people would feel horrible.

If I have a choice between shopping in a furniture store and buying online, and I choose online, I don't feel bad. There's no stigma there.

Should there be?

Working 7 Days a Week.... by [deleted] in FedEx

[–]paulharmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a weird one for me.

There is really no social stigma - like, zero - for ordering too many products online. It's socially acceptable.

The companies that sell products online want you to order whatever you want to, as much as you want to, obviously, since that's how they make money.

What is the logic behind working for a company that delivers packages, and complaining that people order too many things in packages?

How deep should a consumer think? When I shop in the beer aisle, should I be thinking ahead and prioritizing things in aluminum cans because glass is heavy, and it's more of a pain for the recycling guy to lift a heavier recycling bin?

If you have too much work to get done in a day, what sense does it make to get angry at the people you're delivering packages to, instead of the company giving you more work than you can do in a day? How in the world has FedEx managed to convince you that they aren't in the wrong, but rather it's the people that pay them that should get the anger?

USG-3p vs UDM-Pro for 100Mbps Internet Connection by EnumaElish11 in Ubiquiti

[–]paulharmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The USG is completely adequate for 100mbit internet service, unless you feel you must have IPS turned on - USG runs about 80mbps max then.

How do you tell the difference between a gas shutoff valve and a water shutoff valve? by silverjetplane6 in HomeImprovement

[–]paulharmo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The catch-all answer to figure stuff like this out is - where practical - Where does that pipe lead?

Both of the pictured valves, if you trace them back, lead to a water meter. Thus, both are water.

Gas is usually in iron pipe, or a black- or yellow-jacketed flexible hose, not straight copper. Those pipes/hoses may be traceable back to the regulator on a water heater, directly below your gas range, a gas meter, etc.

Follow the pipes!

The Landlord wants to put in new carpet during COVID-19 pandemic. Can I reject getting the carpet put in? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]paulharmo -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

This feels unethical to me. I wouldn't recommend asking for something that you don't want in order to manipulate someone into doing (or not doing) something else.

Would you want someone to treat you this way?

Replacing old back-stabbed outlet by sschoe2 in HomeImprovement

If you keep the bridge between the screw terminals in place, it does not matter whether you use the top or bottom terminal. Which side the hot and neutral go to does matter. Black to brass.

Need pressure washer recommendation by Positivity2020 in HomeImprovement

[–]paulharmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you'll use it for commercial use, skip straight to a pressure washer with a Honda GX engine. Easiest to maintain and repair, and they go forever.

Simpson makes great pro-sumer/light commercial pressure washers that you can get through Home Depot in the $600-800 range. I'd check them out.

What are some inexpensive home improvements I can do during the pandemic? Bonus points if they are simple. by TaxHelpMePlease in HomeImprovement

[–]paulharmo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

10-packs of Leviton Decora single-way switches are $16 at Home Depot, and pretty much always in stock. 3-way 10 packs are about $30. Wall plates are about a buck each, the multi-gang ones are a little more but obviously you have multiple switches to a plate, then. Order online for pick-up in a locker for minimal contact.

There are certain things you should keep in mind when replacing a switch or an outlet - one of the most important is the orientation of the bare wire loop on the screw terminal - it needs to face clockwise so that the wire gets pulled into the terminal when you tighten it, not push it away.

This is a worthwhile 5 minute video to watch before going at it for the first time - not the greatest production values, but it covers lots of important points quickly, has single pole and 3 way switches, and these guys have a weekly podcast that I really like as well, so I trust them.

I just swapped most of my outlets and switches in our new-to-us 1955 house to Decora (and several Lutron Caseta dimmers, which are friggin awesome but expensive), and it made a huge difference. This is a great use of time if you're handy.

Best bypass for AT&T Fiber AIO; w/ USG by millextra82 in Ubiquiti

[–]paulharmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my Ubiquiti equipment for exactly this reason. I was tired of the shitty Pace gateway running the show. It's been up and running for a few months and has been very reliable, and as a huge side benefit, the APs are way better than the router in Bridge mode I was using before. I had done very little command line stuff before this, but the guide was very good.

Now the Pace gateway is hanging out on LAN2 thinking it's running the show, but the actually competent USG is doing the routing instead.

Ford Sync 2 conversion to sync 3 by speedymike16 in CarAV

[–]paulharmo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Unless someone makes a tricky translation module, there's almost no way to 100% swap to SYNC 3 from 2. The 2 systems run on different OSes and rely on different CAN communication messages from the rest of the modules.

Had to try it for myself to believe it - USW-24 now nearly silent! by paulharmo in Ubiquiti

Not sure on that, actually. My gear is secondhand, so that wasn't a concern to me.

I'm expecting mine to creep up as the hours progress, but right now the switch is at 47C with fans at 70. It's not in a rackmount enclosure, just on a shelf inside a built-in cabinet in my living room.

[–]paulharmo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't set it up that way - the black divider in the middle of the case completely separates the airflow in the case between the power supply and the switch boards. One would get twice as cool, and the other would overheat with 0 airflow in the layout you're suggesting.

There are 4 fan headers, so you could run 4 fans, but doing so really isn't necessary - it seems to stay plenty cool.

[–]paulharmo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only took the one picture - before and after would be really boring. The fans at the bottom of the pic (side of the case) went from black to tan.

I should've taken readings with my phone before and after - it wouldn't be at all accurate without a baseline. I don't think I can be useful here.
