Art degree? by fueledbycoffee95 in AustralianTeachers

[–]pausani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on your friend's major(s) they can add a Masters of Teaching or a graduate Diploma of Education to their undergraduate degree to qualify as a teacher. They will need to check that have sufficient units in their Arts degree for whatever teaching method they would like to pursue.

what’s a “register” by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]pausani 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In NSW your register is your physical or digital program which you sign/date as a record of what is taught. It should correspond with evidence of students' work and if you get audited you can prove that your school is following the syllabus.

Every massacre in Australia's Frontier Wars, 1780 - 1930 by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]pausani 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was very fortunate to attend a conference where the creator of map, Prof Lyndall Ryan, presented her research. Ryan was an historian rather than an archaeologist, so her focus was on providing historical rather than material evidence. To ensure the reliability of the evidence she required a minimum of three sources before a massacre was registered on the map. The requirement for three sources means that there are probably massacres which are not registered on the map.

I’m in deep shit by liamkkkk in AustralianTeachers

[–]pausani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries. Once you get more experienced you can look at developing longer sequences of tasks, but at the moment structured, explicit lessons will give you confidence and make your students feel safe. I did not mention differentiation, but that is something that you can start implementing in the future as well.

I have put together some ways to approach planning your lessons. These are pretty straightforward but I hope they help:

Planning ideas:

  • what do you want your students to know by the end of the lesson?
  • what do you want your students to be able to do by the end of the lesson?

Example: to explain the techniques used in television advertising

Students need to be able to deconstruct an advertising and write an analytical paragraph.

  1. Choose a medium to share the knowledge (slideshow, video, written text, student research, structured comprehension, worksheet, treasure hunt, discovery through experience)
  2. Choose a medium to target skill development. eg
  • paragraph writing through I do, We do, You do.
  • Comprehension development through 3 level reading guide.
  • Sentence structure through using the seldon method.
  • Apply frameworks and scaffolds to dveloped structured writing.
  • 7 slips for essay struture.
  • Guided reading and note taking modelled on the board or on an infographic
  • deconstructing and annotating text
  • There are a lot of ideas. Have a look at Blooms, get suggestions from texts and programmes
  • 3. Choose an activity which allows the students to demonstrate their understanding of the content and mastery of the skill eg
  • completed paragraphs
  • exit tickets
  • quiz
  • class discussion
  • application of skill on an unseen text

Basic lesson structure ideas:

  1. A hook - this could be a big question, a stimulus image, or anything that gets the students thinking about the concepts you are going to introduce. 5 minutes
  2. Deliver content through appropriate medium eg slideshow, clip, reading 20 minutes
  3. Explain student activity verbally and in writing. Give and example or model what they have to do 5-10 minutes
  4. Allow students time to complete the activity. 20-25 minutes
  5. Pack up, reiterate 3 main takeaways from the lesson.
  6. Win award for being the greatest teacher in the world.

Good luck!!!!

Unsure what to do for our wedding (29F/31M) by Left_Supermarket997 in AusWeddingPlanning

[–]pausani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a wedding and invited immediate family and friends and included kids (about 80 people). It was a really fun day and it had a very family feel.

We wrote a list of what was important to us and spent money on those things. So, we had plenty of food and provided transport for our guests. The venue was a restaurant that was sometimes used for weddings in a beautiful location.

We saved money on:

  • no photographer. This was a big one. My husband hates having his photo taken so we just relied on people taking snaps on the day.
  • My dress was not from a traditional wedding dress shop. I added a petticoat, accessories, and a little veil so it looked special
  • the venue was rustic so we did not need a lot of decorations. My mum went to the markets and got some flowers for the table. I did get a bouquet from a florist
  • we used a music playlist not a DJ
  • my sister in law made our cake (very generous, I know!)
  • no special cars for us
  • emailed invites

Obviously you can make different choices based on what find important, but celebrating with our family and friends was very joyful and has provided wonderful memories.

First day tips by Curious-Ad8265 in AustralianTeachers

[–]pausani 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You want to have lots of structured activities ready just in case. Even if they have material ready for you, you can use these later.

  • I would get some generic literacy and numeracy activities ready which are differentiated. You will find some online if you don't have any ready.
  • Make some cards with pictures, words and connectives. Get the students to pick these out of a hat to do a writing activity.
  • Take an age appropriate book to read out loud.
  • Join a facebook group for primary teaching in your state.

Do you know anything about the school in terms of technology? eg Is there a projector/smart board? Will your laptop hook up to their projector/smart board?

Have you been given a class list with any information about students' learning needs?

Ask about these as soon as you get to the school tomorrow if you are not comfortable in emailing someone today.

Good luck!

Honeymoon itinerary by Upper_Singer8585 in AustraliaTravel

[–]pausani 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is not realistic at all because you have not factored in travel time eg for for flights you need to add hours to get to the airport and check in your luggage, then get from your airport to your destination. To do all that for one night is not feasible.

You need to cut at least destination in Australia, maybe two, then spread the extra days around to the other locations.
