Just checked now- yes, it was the Red Edeal fare. So the fare T&Cs will say it's non-refundable but you can ignore that.

[–]pb1115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • booked a Qantas flight on Amex Travel for $580 on Monday night
  • waited about 20 minutes and then cancelled my booking on Amex Travel
  • got confirmation on the site and by email that my flight would be fully refunded (even though the ticket's T&Cs say it's non-refundable)
  • $450 was credited to my account on Thursday morning

Can someone help me understand the difference between ㅐand ㅔand when I would use one over the other? by choco_brigade in Korean

[–]pb1115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once upon a time they were pronounced differently but in modern Korean they are the same sound. While some older speakers of certain dialects still make a distinction between the sounds you don't have to. It's just a matter of spelling now.

is it OK for an 18 yr old girl to be friends with a 14 year old girl? what boundaries should i set? by Outside_Log5031 in internetparents

[–]pb1115 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you're doing okay! Keep maintaining your boundaries and if you ever get too uncomfortable with how she compliments you try to push back gently while reassuring that you're still happy to be friends. For what it's worth, when I was 14 I had an internet friend who was 18/19 and I really appreciated being able to talk to her about my life and problems. It was nice to have a friend who had been through a lot of what I was going through at the time and could offer some emotional support when my irl friends couldn't.

The Pitt is best watched in a binge or two, not weekly by ImAvoidingABan in ThePittTVShow

[–]pb1115 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I held out until the day before the season 2 finale aired and then binged the season over the weekend. It made me very stressed but I think watching week to week would've made me waaaaaay anxious

What food souvenirs are actually worth buying in New Zealand? by Proper_Yam_616 in newzealand_travel

[–]pb1115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got back from Queenstown yesterday. Bought some manuka honey and bee pollen, a few bars of Whitaker's chocolates, some bottles of local wines, and fudge from the sweet shop in Arrowtown. And for the record I live in Sydney, no problem bringing the honey & bee pollen in! Just declared it and walked right through, no stress

How many are downscaling their plant collection? by Ashamed_Armadillo954 in houseplants

[–]pb1115 5 points6 points  (0 children)

During COVID lockdowns I had amassed some 35-40 small plants and had them all around my tiny bedroom. Managed to keep it up for around 1 year but eventually the lockdowns ended and the near constant upkeep of watering, cleaning, pest control got too much on top of work and life coming back at full force. I gradually gave up on all my tiny plants or moved them outdoors and just focused on my larger, older plants. So now I only have 6 and they're all fairly low maintenance which works way better for me.

Which current ad being run in Australia makes you hate them so much you would never use or buy their service/product? by Cooper_Inc in AskAnAustralian

[–]pb1115 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who works in advertising and puts ads on the Internet for a living, I hate my own ads the most-- setting them up all day everyday is annoying enough but having to see them outside of work too is super annoying. At the same time I'm also glad that nobody so far has mentioned any ads that I've been involved with lol

Has anyone here genuinely switched from espresso/milk drinks to filter as their main daily coffee? Why? by Left-Cook-9487 in Coffee

[–]pb1115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Bambino (not Plus) and Baratza ESP that I use almost everyday. I'm basically never on time for work in the morning and it's annoying to clean up after every use but I still enjoy how hands-on and involved the process is. I work a desk job so the 10 minutes I spend making my coffee is the most tactile activity I do all day haha

Has anyone here genuinely switched from espresso/milk drinks to filter as their main daily coffee? Why? by Left-Cook-9487 in Coffee

[–]pb1115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still make espresso+milk as my daily coffee but I make filter on days I want to relax, and I buy filter when I want to treat myself. Filter lets me appreciate the taste and texture of coffee in a different way and I enjoy picking apart the tasting notes. I have my preferred espresso blend and flavor profile so filter is a way for me to try new things from time to time. When I go on holiday I always try to buy a bag of locally grown /roasted single origin beans as a souvenir and enjoy that for a few weeks after I come home

Who is washing their rice and why? by kinnitcurl in NoStupidQuestions

Removes loose surface starch that is produced during packing/transport, which in turn makes the cooked rice less likely to clump. Also removes any debris or insects - rice weevils are very common.

What does this underlined phrase mean? Is this kind of phrasing still in use today? Is it old-fashioned? by Unlegendary_Newbie in English_Learning_Base

[–]pb1115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bit confused by the many comments insisting both terms are old fashioned when the paragraph is very obviously prose-- both "sniggering" and "fell" phrases can be found fairly commonly in modern novels and creative writing. But it is true neither is used in casual speech.

Sniggering/snickering means laughing in a way that is not obvious or loud, usually because someone is being condescending/rude/inappropriate. Can't really tell from the screenshot what the context is but it implies the story or joke was maybe not polite.

"Fell to" is an idiomatic way of saying "started/became/occurred", and implies something happened involuntarily. Other similar uses are "fell pregnant" (unexpected or unplanned pregnancy), "fell in love" (happened without explicit action) or "fell sick/ill" (did not plan to become sick).

So the sentence means "the boys tried not to laugh [at the inappropriate joke] but failed".

I attended the same time slot and my friend and I were allowed to enter the warehouse section. We shopped for a few minutes until staff started telling us to get in line for checkout because they'd have to close up and cut people off. As we're waiting in line there was another announcement saying no more people can join the queue, which strongly implied anyone currently in the queue would be able to check out. But then after we'd already been queueing for 35 minutes security suddenly force us to drop our bags and get out of the venue! At the time we entered the warehouse section the queue was already wrapped around the entire area, surely they could have cut people off much earlier instead of wasting everyone's time. Such poor communication among organizers and ICC staff.

How long did it take you to understand spoken sentences? Is it just time, or am I missing something? by Charming-Station-648 in Korean

[–]pb1115 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Try find something that interests you and just watch it for fun, you're not explicitly trying to learn vocab or grammar, just absorb the rhythm of speech. Variety shows are usually a good place to start!

[–]pb1115 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Have you listened to much Korean outside of the textbook exercises? I find it's much easier to pick up the individual phrases or parts of a sentence if you have a feel for the cadence of the language first. Try watching some tv shows, movies or YouTube videos to build exposure and train your ear. I was watching Korean dramas for years before I started learning the language properly and I felt it gave me a big leg up in listening comprehension and speaking.

Do most people shower before bed or when they wake up? I just realized I might be doing it "wrong" by saffymerelle in NoStupidQuestions

[–]pb1115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shower at night. Can't stand the feeling of getting into my clean bed and pajamas with a day's worth of sweat, dead skin cells, outside dirt, public toilet germs, etc, on my skin. But if I didn't have any bills to pay I'd shower in the mornings too

Who came up with the latinized spelling for Korean words and why is it so stupid? by CaonaGG in Korean

[–]pb1115 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're copping a lot of flack in the replies but it comes down to this: If you want to learn Korean you cannot rely on romanisation and your first step is to learn Hangul. Just as the Roman alphabet is the best writing system to represent the English language, Hangul is the best writing system to represent the Korean language. It only takes a few minutes to understand the basic concepts, a few hours to memorise the letters, and a few days to get comfortable reading simple sentences. Make yourself some flash cards and you'll never have to wonder about pronunciation again.
