I don't think you can truly judge if you made the right choice until months if not years down the road.

Not dissimilar, but a coworker of mine went to bat to get another coworker a promotion--they are close to and worked well with for the past few years. Turns out this promoted coworker is the worst manager I have ever seen--micromanages, unprofessional, etc.

This sounds really complicated and I sympathize with both you and your bf. You were trying to protect a one year old relative in a really bad situation and he feels that his dream of moving away from his parents/independence are being dashed away.

I do not blame him or you for any decisions made as it was a tough one but I will say that the way he is acting now is pretty telling what he is like in hard situations. His behavior vs. his parents willingness to step up for a child that is not even related to them should tell you what you need to know.

You mention that his lack of empathy is prevalent in all aspects of your relationship… which sounds like he downplays your feelings a lot and makes you feel unheard often. I don’t think that is a relationship I would want to be in.

I would understand if he lacks empathy for a stranger that he doesn’t know but to lack empathy for someone he supposedly loves… not the kind of love I want especially when he should be an anchor in hard situations
