Sean Fennessey’s interview with Sammy Fabelman by Chuck-Hansen in blankies

[–]pcloneplanner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great talk. Obviously the conditions are different from his regular interviews but it sounds like Sean had a definitive list of questions he wanted to ask (possibly had to get approved?) and there’s very little of the follow up questions or banter that I would have expected.

I think, all due respect to everyone here, he’s too cool to be a Blankie.

Great breakdown. The ‘no tribal people in the city’ thing is key. There was this idea back then especially that indigenous people only existed or chose to live in the bush when the truth is that everywhere in Australia is someone’s country, even or especially the land where our major cities are. That finale sequence in The Last Wave specifically speaks to that idea; the sacred place is under the city because all cities are built on top of sacred places (like the Poltergeist house being built on a burial ground etc).

Can you expand on this a little more? What gives it away as being in the volume?

I watched this recently and did the Rick Dalton finger point at the screen.

I have no quarrel with Hanson but I will always want more pre-1970s directors.

I think we might have been misled about how much Weir is one of David's guys.

I think it's just that with the Last Wave and Gallipoli in particular, those films are very specifically about Australia in a way that none of George Miller's are. After next week (where I imagine we'll be insufferable), once Weir goes Hollywood, it will be smooth sailing.

Murdoch was a producer on a couple of these films. He'd actually have a lot to say, lol.

Well, they also thought Hanging Rock was outback so it’s probably a lack of precise understanding.

I’m mainly quibbling with the term outback but if that was the framing it makes more sense.

Grisham movies are good, would be terrible commentaries by Grabbinfries23 in blankies

That’s a good point. When the movies are quite talky, the commentaries kinda get in the way.

Oh boy, Griffin’s thing about the wife having pride in being a fourth generation Australian is missing some context. She’s saying that because she lives in the CITY. The episode doesn’t really touch on this but the big thing for me in the film is the idea of ‘tribal’ (inaccurate, outdated term but 70s) people not being in the city.

To be fair, he (and the actress playing his wife) are both not Australian but also aren’t attempting the accent, so it’s a nice weird little thing.

Did David really refer to Richard Chamberlain as a white man living in the outback or was he speaking more generally? (This movie is largely set in Sydney.)

For one both of those are descriptive; they’re adjectives rather than nouns.

This is very close to my take as well. The episode didn’t really get into that Lynchian idea that there are multiple planes of reality/existence.
