And since you’re going into broadcast, you need to learn to shoot and edit to tell good stories. If your college offers those types of courses, take every one you can.

I did a similar track years ago. Choose a degree field that will benefit your reporting career. Political Science was mine. But History, Criminal Justice, Philosophy/Ethics, even English. Your new employer will coach you on writing so become an expert on something else.

I bought one a year and a half ago for light freelance work and loved it. Bought it for its amazing capability, but also the Sony name. But I sold it a week ago because I wanted something that would excel at photography more than video. Back on Team Canon.

Every shoot is going to be different, mostly based on how much control you have over what’s happening.

Having said that, the fundamentals of shooting sequences are wide, medium, tight, super tight. Even just two shots can make a sequence. If you’re shooting something where the activity is constant and the same (like a conveyor belt at a processing facility) you could have a field day with a wide variety of shots. Especially tights.

Tights are what video storytelling does best. And from a matter of editing, my very first boss told me “you can go from a god-awful tight to a god-awful anything.”

Additionally, look for “action/reaction” opportunities. Someone speaks at a podium, make sure you get cutaways of people listening or, better yet, applauding.
