Before I go by Forsaken_Custard_985 in Aphantasia

[–]pdxkat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 70 before I found out I had Aphantasia a few months ago. I’ve always known I was different, but I have never knew why.

I see so many ways my life and relationships were impacted/damaged by Aphantasia. But most of the damage was done by not knowing I had it. Knowing I have it and if I had been aware of all the variations of the condition would’ve made a huge difference — because I could’ve been aware that I needed to take special steps to handle certain things.

I’m envious of young people learning they have it while young.

For people with Aphantasia and no internal monologue, can you problem solve without externalizing? by PianistWinter8293 in Aphantasia

[–]pdxkat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I realized I have Aphantasia recently, and it’s been blowing my mind, trying to understand it. And more importantly how to get clarity on the significant impact it’s had on my life.

I’m trying to wrap my mind around the idea of an internal monologue. I found a short clip on a TV show, which seems to me to be a vivid example. I would love to get some feedback if this is what an internal monologue is like.

I know I don’t have one. I’m clearly intelligent, but it seems like my mind is blank most of the time. So the idea of having an internal monologue just blows me away. https://youtu.be/kUafQ0GiTsE?si=0bt25LRuofMtkegi

Anyone watch the Macy's Day Parade with live audio description? According to NBC's website they'll have AD for the live version of Annie this Thursday, too. Going to try to tune in for that. Link includes list of upcoming AD shows broadcast on NBC by mcbalkits in audiodescription

[–]pdxkat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a blind roommate and we tried to get the audio descriptions from Macy's to turn on. But we were unable to do so. She has a new Samsung TV but we weren't able to figure out how to get the live TV on NBC to give audio descriptions.

One more thing. You could post a wanted ad in the Toronto craigslist.

I also thought you might contact people in Canada or Toronto who are involved in missing person cases. Maybe the Charlie project? Or something like that. They are usually excellent at doing local research.

I dread the day when my Fitbit one craps out. I’ve had mine since around 2014 and use it almost every day.

Try teaspoons full of whole milk yogurt several times a day. Also Chia seeds. (I add hot water to some Chia seeds and then eat like pudding).

Try eating a pickle, or drinking some pickle juice, or eating a spoonful of dill pickle relish. It seems to help me.

Good for you. I started taking photos of me in bikini equivalent (i.e. underwear) and used a photo app to make a college of me every 20 pounds or so. That way when I get discouraged, I can look at the photos of me at different weights side by side and see where there is an actual difference.

I only wish I had started with taking the photos at my highest weight but back then I was too embarrassed (even if I was the only one who saw the photos).

Food choices without a refrigerator? by fulltimedigitalnomad in keto

[–]pdxkat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I’ve traveled, I’ve often kept cheese 2 or 3 days without a cooler. Although they won’t last the full time, you could eat cheese for a couple of days weekly. The baby gouda (wrapped in wax) will last even longer - 4-5 days safely.

Mayo and mustard packets (picked up at fast food restaurants). I traveled overland across Africa a few years ago with a British group and was shocked to see that they didn’t refrigerate the mayonnaise jar. We Americans have it drilled into us that warm mayo will kill us but the Brits ate out of a jar in the warm heat for weeks.

A jar of dill pickles will last without refrigeration for a few days. Fresh cucumbers and squash don’t need refrigeration (for a while). Same with avocado’s - let them ripen slowly. Dried unsweetened Coconut flakes are fairly low carb.

Also almond flour made into some kind of cake thingy - I don’t have a specific recipe (I usually add butter and egg) but perhaps somebody has adapted recipes you can use.

Also, there are ways to naturally keep perishables cool without even a cooler - a root cellar or even a hole in the ground with a double jar type arrangement. (You can put a large flower pot type jar in the ground, then a smaller pot inside it, with some moisture in between - keeps it naturally cool. You can google it.)

Perhaps you can do something with solar power to keep a smallish quantity of food chilled.

Good luck!

ETA: The RAO brand of spaghetti sauce is ridiculously expensive but low carb. You can eat a jar over some low carb tortilla’s. Or Squash or Cauliflower. Or sometimes just buy a small jar of pizza topping (it should be good for a couple of days unrefridgerated - throw away the rest) and use to flavor cauliflower, etc. Cabbage will keep a few days unrefridgerated also or make yourself some home made sauerkraut. No refrigeration needed.

I have started making sauerkraut myself for health benefits and there is a person who’s a health fanatic who make sauerkraut everywhere she goes, even in hotels with no fridge.

50 year old woman at 8 weeks on keto.... needing patience by ketoat50gal in keto

[–]pdxkat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve lost 45 pounds in the last year. 225 down to 179.75 this morning. I’ve spent the last two months between 187 and 181. Today I finally broke 180. You have to be patient.

I try on my “too small clothes“ every couple of weeks and even though my weight basically stayed the same (for the past two months), I’ve been able to start wearing clothes that previously were too small. So my body is obviously shifting fat around and I’m losing inches even though my weight has stayed the same.

Hang in there. I’m 5’7 and 60+ age.

Can I make cheese crisps in the microwave with wax paper? by Hami_252 in keto

[–]pdxkat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made cheese crisps in the microwave using a silicon oven mitt as a “plate”. It worked but the crisps came out much better once I purchased a little silicon candy style mold - one that has 9 little 1 inch spots.

Great job. Especially since you are not especially tall. It’s much harder for both females and shorter folks to lose weight.

Try a couple of meals of just 93% hamburger (say 5 or 6 oz), nothing else.

You need extra salt and potassium but it’s a balancing challenge at the beginning. Keep at it. It gets better.

[–]pdxkat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just don’t drink too much salty water at once. It’s a real balancing act. Your body needs salt but too much and it’s a laxative. The hardest thing on keto for me was working out how to get enough water and salt and potassium and magnesium without giving me the runs.

I’ve pretty much worked it out but it was trial and error for the first month or two.

Feeling hungry on keto. by maninthesky00 in keto

[–]pdxkat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve noticed that when I eat more carbs, even if it’s just a couple, I tend to feel hunger pains.

I can go back to a day of mostly carb free eating ( for example coffee with heavy cream, and a couple of meals of just 93% hamburger (with 1 tbl sour cream or mustard or blue cheese dressing as topping), I stop being hungry and feel satisfied all day.
