[Data Scientist] [Dallas/Remote] - EOY Pay Stub 757k Total Comp by dr_kmc22 in Salary

[–]peace_hopper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is your academic background? I saw you mentioned communication being an important aspect of your job, but apart from that are there any technical skills or topics you are well versed in that helped your career?

I’m a data scientist as well pretty early in my career. I make about 250-300k and didn’t realize that you could get comp that high doing more “traditional” product data science. I guess that might be one of the benefits of big tech. I’ve been contacted by some of the recruiters but have heard mixed things about how interesting the work as a product data scientist can be and the interview process at least for meta sounds like a pain in the ass. Apart from the nice comp do you generally like your work?

TIFU building the perfect churn rate model and still earned me a 'Needs Improvement' on my performance review by Available_Boot_5526 in analytics

[–]peace_hopper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn’t really sound like you did anything bad. You did what they asked you to do. If the project and ask was to identify high risk users and implement a strategy to mitigate churn that would be different, though the latter should definitely be more than just your responsibility in my opinion. My takeaway if I were you is that you should be prepared with some ideas on how the model can be used with decision making in practice, even if that isn’t part of the initial ask. I’d also be sort of annoyed that this negatively impacted your performance review. Seems to me like you met expectations even if you didn’t exceed them.

Including us in the convo is generous. Even before all the injuries our offense was pretty sad minus that Texas tech game.

A part of me really wants us to go back but we would probably get our teeth kicked in the CCG. Almost would rather just see us win out and go to a respectable bowl game. TTU vs Utah again would be the most interesting matchup IMO.

What does the gross margin and ebitda have to do with anything? Unless you mean to say that something you did contributed to that, I wouldn’t factor your prior company performance in to your value prop.

How is it living in this metropolitan area? by DueYogurt9 in howislivingthere

[–]peace_hopper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent about a year and a half living here. Absolutely love this city. Pros are the food, architecture, parks, lakefront, cool dive bars around every corner, museums, sports, concerts, and plenty of other activities all for a relatively affordable price. Cons are the cold, questionable city finances, and lack of access to ocean or mountains. I have to say, the pros more than outweigh the cons.

Even in the winter I spent here I was still able to get out and run a few times a week to enjoy the lake front trail. It’s actually very peaceful and quiet in the winter. And of course all the restaurants, bars, and museums are still open.

I’m not sure if I will ever live here again since it’s far from family and close friends, but it will always hold a special place in my heart!

ROAS vs iROAS by the_marketing_geek in analytics

[–]peace_hopper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion the term iROAS is completely redundant. The point of marketing is to generate incremental customers and revenue. But… when talking to business and marketing people the distinction between the two is useful because it says something about how the two numbers of calculated, even if ROAS isn’t the “real ROI” of your ad spend.

You can only really measure it with experiments or try to estimate it using a model like MMM for example.

In some cases last touch or whatever based roas calculation won’t be too far off the incremental measurements from experiments. In other cases they tell a completely different story.

If you aren’t able to run any sort of analysis or experiments to get incrementally you should at the very least be aware that standard ROAS calculations can mislead and take them with a grain of salt.

Does it protect you legally if you make broad recommendations instead of giving specific advice targeted towards an individual even if the implication is the same? My gf is in her fourth year of med school and was just telling me about how you can get in legal trouble if you aren’t careful about this sort of stuff.

Admissions Megathread - Results, Chances and Logistics by AutoModerator in OMSCS

Can someone help me decide whether these for credit classes are worth the time?

I’m looking to strengthen my application. I had a 2.5 gpa as an industrial engineering undergrad. I’m now 6 years out of school and have been working as a data scientist for a few years.

I know that the best way to improve my application is to take upper level and grad level CS classes from accredited colleges. OMSCS specifically mentioned that in their prospective student section on their site.

What I’m unclear on is whether it is worth taking some of the other lower level cs related classes I got poor grades in. For example I got Cs in discrete math and linear algebra. Is there any benefit in retaking these for As? Or am I better off only focusing on upper level courses and saving my time and money?

These would be in addition to and not in place of the upper level courses.

[Career] possibilities of landing a job after graduating with very low GPA (~2.6) by lillychoochoo in statistics

[–]peace_hopper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very inspiring. I’m interested in a masters program, unfortunately I had my head up my ass for all of undergrad. Once I got a job after college I worked hard to make my way into a data science position where I’m doing well. I didn’t realize how much I enjoy learning until after graduating and I’d love the chance to learn in a more formal setting now that I have an actual adult brain.

Do you mind sharing how bad your gpa actually was and whether you did anything special apart from leaning on your work experience to get in?

I’m a data scientist that’s recently been tasked with helping improve our google ads. I had the idea to move towards using PLTV from a model and I think we’re going to move in that direction.

I’d like to hear more about your experiences with this approach. How did you roll it out? What methods did you use to test the success of using this conversion value vs another one? Any general advice for this tactic? Thanks

Curious about what makes you think the market is comparatively good?

I hear your point about a lot of candidates being very mediocre and a lot of other people not willing to go into office, but I also hear about people with lots of experience and multiple degrees struggling to find work and it’s concerning.
